Description : A powerful new understanding of global currency trends, including the rise of the Chinese yuan At first glance, the history of the modern global economy seems to support the long-held view that the currency of the world’s leading power invariably dominates international trade and finance. But in How Global Currencies Work, three noted economists overturn this conventional wisdom. Offering a new history of global finance over the past two centuries and marshaling extensive new data to test current theories of how global currencies work, the authors show that several national monies can share international currency status—and that their importance can change rapidly. They demonstrate how changes in technology and international trade and finance have reshaped the landscape of international currencies so that several international financial standards can coexist. In fact, they show that multiple international and reserve currencies have coexisted in the past—upending the traditional view of the British pound’s dominance before 1945 and the U.S. dollar’s postwar dominance. Looking forward, the book tackles the implications of this new framework for major questions facing the future of the international monetary system, including how increased currency competition might affect global financial stability.

Description : At any given time, a limited number of national currencies are used as instruments of international commerce, to settle foreign trade transactions or store value for investors and central banks. How countries whose currencies gain international appeal choose to use this status forms their strategy of currency statecraft. In different circumstances, issuing governments may welcome and promote the internationalization of their currency, tolerate it, or actively oppose it. Benjamin J. Cohen offers a provocative explanation of the strategic policy choices at play. In a comprehensive review that ranges from World War II to the present, Cohen convincingly argues that one goal stands out as the primary motivation for currency statecraft: the extent of a country’s geopolitical ambition, or how driven it is to build or sustain a prominent place in the international community. When a currency becomes internationalized, it generally increases the power of the nation that produces it. In the persistent contestation that characterizes global politics, that extra edge can matter greatly, making monetary rivalry an integral component of geopolitics. Today, the major example of monetary rivalry is the emerging confrontation between the US dollar and the Chinese renminbi. Cohen describes how China has vigorously promoted the international standing of its currency in recent years, even at the risk of exacerbating relations with the United States, and explains how the outcome could play a major role in shaping the broader geopolitical engagement between the two superpowers.

Description : "The Chinese economy is now easily one of the most important and closely scrutinized economies in the world. Relatively minuscule changes in predictions of how the Chinese economy will perform can drive up or down stocks and the price of oil and other commodities. At the heart of how the Chinese economy works is its financial system-but the Chinese financial system is vastly different than most people in the West can understand. How do house prices work, for example, in a country where the very concept of property ownership is significantly different than our own? This edited volume will serve as a standard reference guide to China's financial system. With eighteen chapters, the handbook features overviews on the banking sector-the core of China's financial system and the key channel for implementing China's monetary policy-China's ongoing reforms, and the quickly growing bond and money markets, among other topics. Each chapter is written by a leading expert in the field, and as a whole the list of contributors represents an impressive mix of leading scholars and high-level policy officials, some with first-hand knowledge of setting and carrying out Chinese financial policy. The handbook will serve as the first real authoritative volume of literature in the field, and will shed extensive new light on the links between China's financial system and the real economy"--

Description : Our system believes and gives respect to national sovereignty as the only means to solving all current global issues. Since with national sovereignty you have the only true way of creating wealth that will solve balance of payments, global deficit, global debt, unemployment, economic and financial issues among other things. Tomorrow’s World Order strongly believe that the only solution is through a sovereignty guaranteed right: the right to print fresh new money without worrying about loan repayments and interest to pay. It’s the only way to wealth. The current system is there to screw every country on earth but benefit a few. Only printing new money is the route to wealth and solving today’s global issues but it’s not just a case of printing money, that is where we come in because hyperinflation and general inflation are animals hard to tame but we have mastered the skills and I will tell you how. FutureGoldCoin [FCI] is a future global digital currency for transactions and is to act as a Single Reserve Global Currency [SRGC] to work with a Sovereign nation’s currency side by side to steer growth and increase wealth exponentially at the same time fighting hyperinflation as printing money shall be the only source of new money. Never Global Debt Again. Replaces Global Debt with Perpetual Savings. Every system must have a leader to prosper. A leader to protect it, to lead it and safeguard its future hence the rise of Tomorrow’s World Order [TWO] with sovereign powers to print our own money, write and enforce our laws globally. Strong leadership guarantees the survival and existence of any system. FutureGoldCoin is a digital currency together with our system and comprehensive approach will change the world as we know it today from global debt to huge national savings and global wealth. Our system and our currency the FCI will provide;✔ A fast and secure way to carry out global transactions.✔ A way of reducing transactions costs greatly globally.✔ Reduce major fluctuation risks.✔ Help to boost trade globally.✔ Help all nations generate huge savings and the needed new money to solve their problems.✔ A huge helper in fighting hyperinflation and normal inflation.✔ Will eliminate the Triffin Dilemma and the Beggar-thy-Neighbor problems so that a country will stand by itself and only its monetary skills will determine success or failure rather than be derailed by external forces.✔ Will not take away the sovereignty of any country which is the only way to be self-sufficient and the road to wealth, with the current system whenever a country uses another’s as a reserve currency it automatically loses this sovereignty and the ability to control its fiscal planning e.g. by devaluing the currency to increase exports. It relies on adjustments by the country whose reserve currency is in use and therefore technically under it.

Description : Notwithstanding financial crises, global foreign exchange markets have undergone a tremendous growth during the last two decades. Foreign exchange (FX) is often thought of as a site where economic actors exchange currencies for buying foreign goods or selling goods in foreign countries, but the FX markets are better understood as financial spheres, dominated by speculative actors. A key question is how this huge global speculative sphere has developed, and what maintains it. Thus far, global currency markets have been largely neglected by the new approaches to finance, and until now no study has existed to chart the interplay of their structural evolution and their shape as knowledge spheres. This new book offers a systematic study of FX markets from a knowledge sociological perspective, empirically focussing on analysts within these markets. It makes the argument that market structures are reflected in, and become stabilised by, distinct cultures of financial expertise. These cultures connect the actions and perceptions of loosely coupled, globally distributed market players, and establish shared sets of strategies of how to observe, valuate and invest. This highly original book will be of interest to scholars of economics, sociology and political science, and in particular to all those with an interest in the sociology of finance and the role of finance in the contemporary world.

Description : With EU legislation, the increasing reach of the US economy, greater flexibility of financial instruments, and M&A activity across borders, financial markets are becoming ever more international. Overshadowing them all is the spectre of the credit crunch - a global tsunami that stemmed originally from the subprime mortgage crisis in the US but quickly became a global issue, hitting both international money markets and high street lending. How the Global Financial Markets Really Work brings clarity and sense to an often complex international environment, showing how circumstances in one country can have a dramatic effect on the financial environment in many others. The book examines financial markets as they are today - global and, for better or worse, interlinked and inter-dependent. It covers the markets of the US and Europe, as well as other key financial centres around the world, such as Hong Kong and Sydney, but will also offer insight to the unique issues facing emerging markets, including Eastern Europe, China, India and the United Arab Emirates.

Description : This economic and political science work is a rigorous analysis that demonstrates that although it is a privilege and a benefit for the US to have its currency, the dollar, as the leading world reserve currency, the privilege also proves to be a very significant economic and security burden imposed on the nation.
