Description : NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In a small town on the verge of big change, a young woman unearths deep secrets about her family and unexpected truths about herself. Filled with insights that are the hallmark of Anna Quindlen’s bestsellers, Miller’s Valley is an emotionally powerful story about a family you will never forget. For generations the Millers have lived in Miller’s Valley. Mimi Miller tells about her life with intimacy and honesty. As Mimi eavesdrops on her parents and quietly observes the people around her, she discovers more and more about the toxicity of family secrets, the dangers of gossip, the flaws of marriage, the inequalities of friendship and the risks of passion, loyalty, and love. Home, as Mimi begins to realize, can be “a place where it’s just as easy to feel lost as it is to feel content.” Miller’s Valley is a masterly study of family, memory, loss, and, ultimately, discovery, of finding true identity and a new vision of home. As Mimi says, “No one ever leaves the town where they grew up, even if they go.” Miller’s Valley reminds us that the place where you grew up can disappear, and the people in it too, but all will live on in your heart forever. Praise for Miller's Valley “Overwhelmingly moving . . . In this novel, where so much is about what vanishes, there is also a deep beating heart, of what also stays.”—The New York Times Book Review “Stunning . . . The matriarchal theme [is] at the heart of Miller’s Valley. Miriam pushes her smart daughter to consider college, and other women—a teacher, a doctor, a benefactor—will raise Mimi up past the raging waters that swirl in her heart.”—The Washington Post “Economical and yet elegant . . . [Anna Quindlen’s] storytelling and descriptive powers make Miller’s Valley compelling. . . . Miller’s Valley has a geography and fate all its own but its residents, realities, disappointments, joys and cycle of life feel familiar, in the best way possible.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “A family story with humor, surprise, sorrow and mystery . . . Quindlen has created distinctive characters, none of whom seems like anyone you’ve met before in fiction.”—The Columbus Dispatch “A breathtakingly moving look at a family.”—USA Today “[Anna] Quindlen’s provocative novel will have you flipping through the pages of your own family history and memories even as you can’t stop reading about the Millers. . . . a coming-of-age story that reminds us that the past continues to wash over us even as we move away from the places and events that formed us.”—Chicago Tribune “Picking up a novel by Anna Quindlen means more than just meeting a new family—it’s like moving in and pretending they are yours. It’s a rare gift for a writer, and Quindlen does it to near perfection.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Quindlen’s novel of a childhood examined by someone who literally can’t go home again is an incredibly engaging read. . . . Miller’s Valley takes familiar themes and manages to make them fresh and new.”—Bust

Description : Adam Chance is the quintessential Sixties man. He saw The Beatles at Shea Stadium, went to Woodstock and was active in the Antiwar movement. Then, he wrote about the counterculture in his best-selling book, WALDEN PAVED OVER. Now, in the 1990s, Adam finds himself middle aged, divorced and suffering from every author's nightmare ... writer's block. An understanding therapist suggests that he keep a journal to do a life review. The effect is liberating. No longer does he have to worry about word limits and cranky editors. He's totally free to express his point of view and explore new writing styles. Adam recalls sharing a pizza with Jim Morrison in a Greek restaurant. He reminisces about a transcendent conversation with John Lennon in Central Park. He balances satire and parody by imagining a 'Sixties Sell-Out' awards ceremony, composing a list of 60 things he fears might happen and writing the script for the final episode of STAR TREK. Adam's fondest memories are of his childhood with best friend, Midnight Duke. In the Summer of 1963, Adam and Midnight climb the Giant's Chair, a huge rock formation located in the rolling hills beyond their back yards. The two boys remain friends into adulthood as they pass through different phases of their lives. Then tragedy strikes and each man must cope with the outcome on his own level. Eventually, both friends are led back to the Giant's Chair. Adam gives himself permission to explore his spiritual side. He immerses himself in books on mind/body healing and practices meditation. He seeks forgiveness from his ex-wife, desires reconciliation with an estranged brother and celebrates the unique qualities of the Sixties generation. Adam's road to understanding contains a few bumps along the way, but his journal becomes the path to renewal. Ultimately, Adam Chance discovers an answer that has always been inside him ... a basic truth as old as time itself.

Description : Fifteen year-old Tommy Miller is determined to stop Yankee General George McClellaneven if he has to kill the cruel Union leader. Tommy is taken captive by Union soldiers, escapes, and is recruited by Captain John Mosby to spy for the Confederacy. He agrees. He feels that is the fastest path to reach McClellan. Fearing for his life at every bend in the road, Tommy uses his innate ability as an actor to convince Union soldiers and leaders along the way that he is a Yankee. Conquering terror-filled nights, and slogging through unrelenting icy rain downpours, Tommy changes hats as he spies for the Confederacy. He saves a fellow teenaged soldier, Roger Pinkerton, albeit a Yankee amidst the battle on Malvern Hill. He then moves on to alert General Lee of McClellans overwhelming Yankee dominance in terms of numbers of troops geared up for battle on the banks of the James River. When Janey OReilly, Tommys girlfriend, is assaulted by passing Yankees close to home near Malvern Hill, Tommy sets out in search of the guilty party. But first he must switch hats, resuming his role as a Yankee private, before he can inflict his revenge. After switching hats again on his way east toward Sharpesburg and Harpers Ferry as a Union private, Tommy learns that General McClellan has been ordered to step down as Commander of the Army of the PotomacYankee General John Pope takes over command with President Lincolns sudden order. As battle erupts along Antietum Creek, between Sharpsburg and South Mountain, Tommy is torn between fighting as a union soldier or his true Confederate Rebel self. The Confederacy is the choice. Tommy Miller jumps across the Antietum Creek amid flying cannon balls, takes up his weapon and fires at Yankees. He sees, hears and smells too much death. He heeds the battle cry of fellow Confederates, to go along with General Robert E. Lee. After the battle, Tommy makes his way south toward Washington where he tries to contact President Lincoln but is rebuffed. Frustrated by Yankees unwilling to accept anything like a peace plan, he determines that a recipe for ending the War is essential. He meets with an inspired Roger Pinkerton and together they head north toward Delaware. Tommy and Roger decide that the best way to end this horrible War is to start a detective agency, like Rogers uncle did before the War. Theyll call it The Miller Pinkerton Detective Bureau, go undercover and undermine War campaign efforts of both sides, spy where needed and end fighting among brothers and sistersmothers and fathers
