That Girl Book Excerpt:

People often reminisce about their first kiss, first date, or even their first love; however, college junior Natasha Lincoln begins a fall semester as a transfer student hoping to have those first experiences for herself. As she grows accustomed to attending a new school, she must deal with the temptations and pressures that plague most young adults’ minds: partying, school work, romantic relationships, and a career. In the midst of it all, Natasha also struggles with staying true to her morals and faith in God. Eventually, the trials and tribulations she faces her sophomore year will not compare to the blessings God has for her years down the road. Even though she is not popular or considered an “it girl,” Natasha still dons the persona of that girl that people often overlook, but in the end, God rewards her for her faithfulness and love for Him.

Severing the Achievement Gap in the Education of Students Book Excerpt:

Severing the Achievement Gap in the Education of Students contains powerful learning activities and successful research-based strategies for the classroom, the school, and the district level. This work is one of several learning outcomes of the SAGES Summer Academy 2006. The SAGES Initiative represents everyone and every effort that justly "severs" an achievement gap in student education. The heart of the Academy was empowerment. The SAGES Summer Academy provided students with life-changing experiences through the following five components: university exposure, academic goal setting, student empowerment, mentorship and career exploration, and academic enrichment. The attendees learned about life's journey with the various needs, supporters, hindrances, and greatness; saw their society and themselves. In an attempt to let their light shine in society, they shared perspectives and their hearts, heads, and hands collaborating to achieve our goals. All proceeds from this book will go to the Rockwood VICC Foundation to assist the student SAGES with college scholarships, supplies, and supplemental services as they work to fulfill their path and promise. Ciris Book Excerpt:

The Ciris is a small scale epic poem which relates the myth of Scylla, daughter of king Nisus of Megara, who betrayed her homeland for love, and was transformed into a sea-bird. It is one of the poems in the Appendix Vergiliana, a collection that has been ascribed to Virgil as his carmina minora. Earlier scholarship has mostly been concerned to prove that the Ciris is not by Virgil, and then to demonstrate that it is a late and derivative composition of little intrinsic merit. The present book argues that Ciris was composed by a contemporary of Virgil, a product of the golden age of Latin poetry. It aims to bring the poem to the attention of modern readers and to rescue it from ill-deserved neglect. The introduction presents detailed linguistic, literary and historical arguments in support of this early composition date and offers a state-of-the-art account of the textual witnesses and the manuscript tradition. The critical text and apparatus are based on a systematic, first-hand analysis of manuscript evidence as well as the rigorous application of text-critical methods. The new text, as close to the original Ciris as can be achieved, includes over one-hundred and fifty changes from previous editions. By engaging with textual scholarship on the poem from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century, the line-by-line commentary provides a comprehensive guide to the numerous textual problems, and is an important contribution to the stylistic and linguistic analysis of golden-age Latin poetry.

Total Recall I Book Excerpt:

Total Recall 1 is not a one-story, coherent book though. This is to say that it does not zero in on one story from beginning to the end. Rather, it is a collection of different stories put together into a small book. From . . . the story of a kingdom, a small town, that divides against itself when the British brings their system of government in which political parties are formed to contest against each other. Members of the different political parties begin to fight. Members of one party would attack members of another party, both physically and diabolically. Then the military intervenes by staging a coup. The nation plunges into war. The same actors in the political party wars begin to use the military to try to destroy their erstwhile political enemies by inventing false accusations against one another. To . . . the story of a woman who marries into a land that’s far away from her own. In the new environment she is just like an orphan. No mother, no father, no near next of kin. Circumstances of life play it well to take advantage of her helplessness by accusing her of murder by witchcraft To . . . stories of African mysticism. The stories are as diverse as they are many. Total Recall 1 is a new kid in the block. The stories are so unique there is a good chance you have not read any story like some of them before. It is written to introduce the world to Africa, the real, everyday Africa. Not the Africa of fiction or the Africa of twisted tales that early European explorers fed their kinsfolk at home. Strangely enough, these tales have stuck and refused to die. It is my hope that through the knowledge gained from this book, the world will begin to understand why Africans do their things the way the world has become accustomed to. The stories in this book will introduce the world to the factors that shape the everyday thinking process of the average African. This, I hope, will introduce a little respect in the arena of international politics.

Talking Back and Looking Forward Book Excerpt:

The editors assembled this book in order to highlight the voices of those who do have an idea—of people who have experienced or witnessed the impact of educational injustice on the lives of marginalized youth and the educators who advocate for them. They set out to collect writing about people’s experiences--their reflections on social justice and injustice, equity and inequity in and out of schools that influence educational access and opportunity. By sharing stories in poetry and prose and photography, telling truths either as people on the margins or as their partners in struggles for educational justice, it is the editors intentions to expand the narrative of the educational policy and practice.
