Description : Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 1: August, 1898 The first impulse was to publish so much of the book as the daily paper referred to had produced, and point out the parallel incidents and doctrines in the Book of Abraham; but talking the matter over with Elder E. H. Anderson (to whom, let us here say, we have Often been indebted for many valuable suggestions in connection with the publication of the era), he suggested that we write and ascertain from Professor Bonwetsch himself if he had issued such a work, and if so Obtain one from him. This was done, and a translation of the Revelation of Abraham is presented to our readers. On account of its length it has been divided and will appear in two numbers Of the magazine, and will be followed by a third paper the purpose of which will be to indicate the points of comparison between this translation from the old Slavic manuscript and the Book of Abraham. It will be in the second paper, that the points of comparison will be most striking, and we must ask our readers to suspend their. Judgment as to the value of this production until the whole of it is before them. It should also be added that how much of this story from the old Slavic manuscript is tinged with fable and how much represents the true visions of the patriarch Abraham, as related by himself, we cannot pretend to say. Description : If a religion cannot attract and instruct young people, it will struggle to survive, which is why recreational programs were second only to theological questions in the development of twentieth-century Mormonism. In this book, Richard Ian Kimball explores how Mormon leaders used recreational programs to ameliorate the problems of urbanization and industrialization and to inculcate morals and values in LDS youth. As well as promoting sports as a means of physical and spiritual excellence, Progressive Era Mormons established a variety of institutions such as the Deseret Gymnasium and camps for girls and boys, all designed to compete with more "worldly" attractions and to socialize adolescents into the faith. Kimball employs a wealth of source material including periodicals, diaries, journals, personal papers, and institutional records to illuminate this hitherto underexplored aspect of the LDS church. In addition to uncovering the historical roots of many Mormon institutions still visible today, Sports in Zion is a detailed look at the broader functions of recreation in society.

Description : Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 10: August, 1907 The Doctrine and Covenants is uniform in purpose and defin ite in doctrine, - teaching us how to live and sanctify our bodies, establishing the genuine system of divine religion, by which we may measure our steps with assurance of salvation and reward for individual effort. Instead of infant damnation, we have infant purity and salvation through the blood of Christ. Little children are pure, - of such is the kingdom of heaven. We do not believe that men will be punished for Adam's transgression, that men are destined to be saved or lost irrespective of worthiness and obedience, that men will be saved by faith or grace alone, or that the principles of the gospel are temporal and evolutionary. We do not believe that men can obtain the authority of the priest hood by scholastic or reverential training, or that they can assume the role of self-appointment by usurping the authority of the apostles of old, - repudiating God's right and power to reveal him self or minister to the children of men. Description : Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 2: Organ of Young Men's Improvement Associations; April, 1899 We had the Buddhist goddess of the country, the mother of the people, ten handed, holding in each hand the weapons for the defense of her children. We had the white goddess of learning, playing on her vena, a stringed instrument of music, the strings of wisdom, because, my friends, all wisdom is musical, where there is a discord there is no deep wisdom. The goddess of good fortune holding in her arms, not the horn, but the basket of plenty, blessing the nations of India, was there, and the god with the head of an elephant, and the god who rides on a peacock - martial men are always fashionable, you know - and the thirty-three million of gods and goddesses besides. Description : Excerpt from The Improvement Era, Vol. 29: April, 1926 The slogan of the Mutual Improvement Association during the current season is We stand for 'an individual testimony of the divinity of Jesus Christ. Many non-believers, generally, 'might question the practicability of this slogan. Some of them would at once say that it is impossible to get such a testimony, a sufficiently good reason being, they would assert, that Jesus was only a man, no more divine than any other man; but even if he is divine, there is no way for common mortal men individually to know this. The latter View is taken, I believe, by most Christians. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Description : Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 12: Organ of the Seventies and the Young Mens Mutual Improvement Associations; November, 1908 In the author's article, The Closing Years of St. Paul's Life in Rome, which appeared in the improvement era, Vol. X, Nos. 5 to 11 inclusive, an attempt was made to depict something of the life of this great Apostle of the Gentiles during his two imprison ments in Rome, and also to describe to some extent such portions of the Eternal City as must have been familiar to him during his sojourn there. It is now preposed to prosecute the theme of his residence in that city, by taking up, as far as the material to hand will permit, the subject of his Christian companions at those periods. The writer would, however, here wish to say that. In presenting the events of St. Paul's life, both in the article above alluded to as well as in the present one, he makes no claim what ever to originality. Indeed, one cannot be expected to originate history, and as in the former article so also in this one, he has confined himself to a compilation of facts and information which have been culled from such sources as he has had access to, and to this end use has been made of some of those works of studious historical writers, which have already been published to the world. The two concluding verses of the Acts of the Apostles, in the New Testament, inform us that Paul, while at Rome during his first imprisonment, was permitted to dwell in his own hired house, and to receive all who came to him, and that be there preached the kingdom of God, and taught those things which concerned the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no man forbidding him. Of his further life and work there is no direct record in the Scriptures, but, as pointed out by Dr. Macduff in his book, St. Paul in Rome, it is evident from the closing chapter of the Apostle's epistle to the Romans, wherein he mentions by name no less than twenty-six Christian brethren, and at the same time makes reference to many other Saints, that as far back as A. D. 60 there was the nucleus of a ourishing Church within the city walls. Two years later, when St. Paul was brought into that city as a chained prisoner, Christian brethren went out to meet him, as we know, to Appii Forum and the Three Taverns (acts, 28. Description : In the years since 1945, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has grown rapidly in terms of both numbers and public prominence. Mormonism is no longer merely a home-grown American religion, confined to the Intermountain West; instead, it has captured the attention of political pundits, Broadway audiences, and prospective converts around the world. While most scholarship on Mormonism concerns its colorful but now well-known early history, the essays in this collection assess recent developments, such as the LDS Church's international growth and acculturation; its intersection with conservative politics in recent decades; its stances on same-sex marriage and the role of women; and its ongoing struggle to interpret its own tumultuous history. The scholars draw on a wide variety of Mormon voices as well as those of outsiders, from Latter-day Saints in Hyderabad, India, to "Mormon Mommy blogs," to evangelical "countercult" ministries.

Description : Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 1: Organ of Young Men's Mutual Improvement Associations; November, 1897 I have been kindly invited by the management of the era to lay before its readers a statement of the doctrine and organization, with the reasons or authority therefor, of the Catholic Church. As these subjects are of a broad and com prehensive character, only a brief outline of them can be expected within the space allowed me by this little magazine. However, I will try to trace, with some degree of fullness, a few of the principal and most important doctrinal and organic features of the church and will begin, by way of introduction, with some necessary observations on religion in general. Description : Excerpt from The Improvement Era, Vol. 16: March, 1913 Morality is the power of endurance in man; and a religion which teaches personal responsibility to God gives strength to morality. There is a powerful restraining in uence in the belief that an all-seeing eye scrutinizes every thought and word and act of the individual. There is a wide difference between the man who is trying to conform to a standard of morality about him and the man who is endeavoring to make his life approximate to a divine standard. The former attempts to live up to the standard if it is above him and down to it if it is below him - and if he is doing right only when others are looking he is sure to find a time when he thinks he is unobserved, and then he takes a vacation and falls. One needs the inner strength which comes with the conscious presence 01' a personal God. If those who are thus fortified sometimes yield to temptation, how helpless and hopeless must those be who rely upon their own strength alone! There are difficulties to be encountered in religion, but there are difficulties to be encountered everywhere. I passed through a period of skepticism when I was in college and I have been glad ever since that I became a member of the church before I left home for college, for it helped me during those trying days. The college days cover the dangerous period in the young man's life; it is when he is just coming into possession Of his powers - when he feels stronger than he ever feels afterward and thinks he knows more than he ever does know. It was at this period that I was confused by the different theories of creation. But' I examined these theories and found that they all assumed something to begin with. The nebular hypothesis, for instance, assumes that matter and force existed matter in particles infinitely fine and each particle separated from every other particle by space infinitely great. Beginning with this assumption, force working on matter - according to this hypothesis - creates a universe. Well, I have a right to assume, and I prefer to assume a Designer back of the design - a Creator back Of creation; and no matter how long you draw out the process of creation, so long as God stands back of it, you cannot shake my faith in Jehovah. In Genesis it is written that, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, and I can stand on that proposition until I find some theory of creation that goes farther back than the beginning. Description : Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 27: April, 1924 The magazines, the newspapers and the people, are singing the praises of the erstwhile smiling little Frenchman - Emile Coue. Re ports of the marvelous cures he has obtained through his methods of auto-suggestion fills page after page of the periodicals. There is small wonder that such should be the case, and, indeed, it Were a wonder if he did not attract attention of those who are physically unfit; and in this day of nerve-racking feats, demanded by our mode of living and business activities, few are physically fit. The reason for mention of this subject, just at this time, is the danger of running away after Coueism and forgetting a higher source from which has come to us remarkable healings which have reached the position of miracles. The doctrine taught by the doughty little Frenchman is as old as the human race. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Description : Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 21: April, 1918 In the first chapter of Genesis we find an impressive sum mary of the creative processes whereby the earth was made ready for human occupancy. Then, in the fourth and fifth verses of the second chapter we read that all the great developments of earlier record, including the creation of man, had been effected before a single plant had sprung from the soil, and while yet there was not a man to till the ground. Two states of exist ence or distinct creations are plainly indicated - the first, a' spir itual and the later an earthly embodiment. Description : Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 6: Organ of Young Men's Mutual Improvement Associations; August, 1903 This subject was brought out in notes nine and ten of the Mutual Improvement Manual for 1900-1901. After a lapse of about two years, questions relating to it continue to be forwarded to the improvement era for reply. One such has been referred to the writer. The chief quandary seems to arise from the fact that the Prophet Joseph Smith said that the kingdom of God had been on the earth continuously from the beginning.
