Description : This book provides an overview of the World Trade Organisation; in particular, it focuses on two of the agreements being developed at the WTO, which are due to be strengthened in 2005, and are likely to have significant implications for libraries and information: the General Agreement on Trade in Services (the GATS) and the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). The book argues that the library and information profession needs to be more aware of these agreements and the way in which they threaten some of the professional ethics and principles (such as the balance in copyright). Explores a vital and very new, much undiscovered area – the WTO and libraries Brings together facts about globalisation and the WTO, libraries and information, within a wider social and theoretical perspective Draws on the author’s wealth of knowledge - building on her many published articles on this topic

Description : The digital revolution of the last decades of the 20th century had a vast impact on scientific, and other libraries worldwide. Modern technology has made the access to information so much easier and faster, and the Internet sometimes gives its users the false impression that all information can be obtained without any human intervention. If this were true, libraries would be reduced from intellectual laboratories to museums, where visitors only come to look at those strange paper format precursors of the digital information carriers. Even if such an extreme futuristic view cannot be completely excluded, it is still very far away. In the meantime, libraries and librarians continue to play an important role, especially in the digital environment where the traditional skills of librarians have found a new importance and new applications. Their devotion to the preservation of historically significant documents may counterbalance the tendency of the Internet to become a dull collection of knowledge facts and to forget the logical processes through which this knowledge was obtained. The long-established experience of librarians as organizers of information and as facilitators of the access to this organised knowledge collection has already proven to be of immeasurable value for the use of all kinds of digital information sources.

Description : The International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL) is an annual international forum for participants to exchange research results, innovative ideas, and state-of-the-art developments in digital libraries. Built upon the successes of the first four ICADL conferences, the 5th ICADL Conference in Singapore was aimed at further strengthening the position of ICADL as a premier digital library conference that draws high quality papers and presentations from all around the world, while meeting the needs and interests of digital library communities in the Asia-Pacific region. The theme of the conference, “Digital Libraries: People, Knowledge & Technology,” reflects the shared belief of the organizers that success in the development and implementation of digital libraries lies in the achievement of three key areas: the richness and depth of content to meet the needs of the communities they intend to serve; the technologies that are employed to build user-centered environments through organization, interaction, and provision of access to that content; and the human elements of management policies, maintenance, and vision necessary to keep pace with new content, new technologies, and changing user needs.
