Description : First published in 1992, Managing Library Automation provides a concise, easy-to-read guide to the main factors which librarians and information workers should be aware of when considering computerization. This second edition has been revised and updated with the assistance of Chris Batt to ensure a fresh perspective. The book retains, however, its original brief of not attempting to cover every detail of an extensive topic, but instead, gives the essential facts and indicates significant trends. Historical accounts have been kept to the minimum and no attempt has been made to describe or explain computing techniques except where an understanding of these assists the effective use of systems by librarians. References to further reading are given where appropriate. The book begins by setting library automation within the context of a wider strategy for the use of Information Technology. The importance of careful planning – the first skill of management – is stressed. Subsequent chapters explore the ‘nuts and bolts’ of hardware and software and reveal some of the more significant changes that have now taken place in the five years since the previous edition was published. The ‘human’ aspect of automation is considered throughout the book. Although a more commonplace activity than five years ago, the successful integration of automation into the total library system is still a considerable managerial achievement.

Description : There Are Many Retrieval Systems Which Handle Only One Phase Of The Total Operation E.G. A Dictionary Is A Tool For Ward Retrieval; A Library Shelf-List Aids Document Retrieval; A Technical Handbook Provides For Data Retrieval. Some System Combines Two Or More Phase. Most Stop At Document Retrieval, And Data Retrieval Which Presents Intellectual And Technical Problems An Order Of Magnitude Greater Than Reference Retrieval Is Still Mainly Left To The User.Retrieval Systems Serve Two Main Functions. One Is Current Awareness To Call To The Attention Of Users Newly Acquired Items Of Potential Interest To Them. The Other Is Retrospective Search To Provide For A Search Throughout The Whole Of A Store For Items Of Interest To A Particular User. Many Existing Systems Serve Only One Of These Functions, Or Consists Of Two Unrelated Subsystems Each Serving One Function. For Example, A Library Catalogue Can Be Used Only For Retrospective Search, A Weekly Accessions Bulletin Only For Current Awareness. We Will See An Increasing Realization That A System Should Be Designed To Serve Both Functions. The Present Book Contains The Scientific Interpretation Of Various Theories And Practices Of Library Information Retrieval. Topics Like Principles Of Information Retrieval; Staff Training And Development; Staff Recruitment And Training; Information Technology; Information Systems In India; Information Retrieval Services; Evaluation And Procurement In Information Retrieval Are Elaborately Dealt In This Book.

Description : Information retrieval is the science concerned with the effective and efficient retrieval of documents starting from their semantic content. It is employed to fulfill some information need from a large number of digital documents. Given the ever-growing amount of documents available and the heterogeneous data structures used for storage, information retrieval has recently faced and tackled novel applications. In this book, Melucci and Baeza-Yates present a wide-spectrum illustration of recent research results in advanced areas related to information retrieval. Readers will find chapters on e.g. aggregated search, digital advertising, digital libraries, discovery of spam and opinions, information retrieval in context, multimedia resource discovery, quantum mechanics applied to information retrieval, scalability challenges in web search engines, and interactive information retrieval evaluation. All chapters are written by well-known researchers, are completely self-contained and comprehensive, and are complemented by an integrated bibliography and subject index. With this selection, the editors provide the most up-to-date survey of topics usually not addressed in depth in traditional (text)books on information retrieval. The presentation is intended for a wide audience of people interested in information retrieval: undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, lecturers, and industrial researchers.
