Description : The 10th edition of Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, like its predecessors, is written from the viewpoint of the applied mathematician, whose interest in differential equations may sometimes be quite theoretical, sometimes intensely practical, and often somewhere in between. The authors have sought to combine a sound and accurate (but not abstract) exposition of the elementary theory of differential equations with considerable material on methods of solution, analysis, and approximation that have proved useful in a wide variety of applications. While the general structure of the book remains unchanged, some notable changes have been made to improve the clarity and readability of basic material about differential equations and their applications. In addition to expanded explanations, the 10th edition includes new problems, updated figures and examples to help motivate students. The book is written primarily for undergraduate students of mathematics, science, or engineering, who typically take a course on differential equations during their first or second year of study. The main prerequisite for reading the book is a working knowledge of calculus, gained from a normal two or three semester course sequence or its equivalent. Some familiarity with matrices will also be helpful in the chapters on systems of differential equations. WileyPLUS sold separately from text.

Description : Information and Telecommunication Technologies increasingly propel the tourism industry and have become one of the most important determinants of the competitiveness for both the public and the private sectors. It is quite evident that tourism organisations which fail to take advantage of the emergent opportunities introduced by technology will lose considerable market share and suffer strategic disadvantages. Business processes re-engineering is essential therefore throughout the tourism industry. Encouragingly tourism organisations respond to the challenges and a large number of principals use technology in both operational and strategic functions. However, technology threatens traditional distribution channels with disintermediation. Non-tourism organisations also take advantage of the technological developments and launch services for tourism consumers and suppliers, increasing the competition for traditional operators. The tourism industry, therefore, emerges as a very dynamic one and prospects are really exciting for professionals and researchers. Ultimately virtual enterprises will dominate the tourism industry. They will produce cost-effective, instantaneous, mass-customised goods and services; develop dynamic interfaces with suppliers and consumers; and constantly reform their structures in order to satisfy consumer needs. They will also take advantage of lean and flexible organisational frameworks; advanced technology; interactive and innovative marketing and management; rapid reaction to market requests; as well as effective networking and partnerships in order to provide more benefits for all stakeholders. ENTER adopted a consistent scientific approach to the study of tourism and technology. Over the last five years it brought together practitioners and researchers of both tourism and information technology.

Description : Competition in air transport has been transformed by industry liberalization initiatives, resulting in the emergence of a wide array of new airline start-ups. Restrictions on low fares have been removed, uniform control requirements have been established, and legislation has facilitated the proliferation of low-fare carriers and competition. The new breed of independent low-fare airlines (LFAs) use market freedoms to shake up the industry's competitive dynamics and offer the customer the alternative of low prices and basic service. A successful low fare business model requires a ruthless and relentless focus on cost cutting and increased operational productivity, combined with an ability to generate and maintain a cash surplus and a cautious but steady fleet and route network expansion. The mastery of these techniques has made Southwest and Ryanair industry leaders, but others such as EasyJet also have a proven record of profitability and market growth, despite not always being the lowest cost or price providers. In this comprehensive and topical study the author systematically provides: · a step-by-step approach to understanding the conditions and choices shaping airline competitiveness, and an assessment of the nature of the low fare market · a comprehensive study of the low fare airline sector's evolution and growth and arguments as to why the European low fare industry is here to stay despite the inevitability of a shake out (reminiscent of the early 1980s in the USA). · unique insights into the success of low fare market leaders in Europe, North America and Australasia and an examination of the experience of US new entrants in the post-deregulations era, to discern strategic lessons for their counterparts; · critical perspectives on strategic management principles and practices in modern airline companies, discussing strategies for survival, and comparing competitive strategies for the main low fare airlines and their limitations; · key reasons for the robustness of the low fare business model during industry crises The book also determines the conditions and strategies that shape sustainable advantage for LFAs in highly competitive deregulated markets where established airlines seek to force out new entrants and considerable political interference remains. Moreover, the book considers why, during the airline industry crisis of late 2001, the market capitalizations of low fare leaders held steady in the wake of the US terrorist attacks, while the major carriers on both sides of the Atlantic were decimated. Cleared for Take-Off is essential reading for airline executives, aerospace manufacturers, regulatory and government transportation agencies, researchers or students of aviation management, transport studies, the travel industry and/or corporate strategy.

Description : As David Wagoner wrote in the earlier volume, The Third Coast, "A Michigan poet may be undistinguishable from an Illinois poet or an Arizona poet (except for subject matter), but the publication of this anthology serves to underline one layer of regional cultural strength, even though these are not 'regional poets:" Over a decade later, Contemporary Michigan Poetry is testimony that Michigan poetry continues to flourish. Preserving the mood and texture of Michigan in the 1980s, this new collection includes the best recent work by the state's most accomplished poets. Among the fifty-three contributors are Charles Baxter, Alice Fulton, Jim Harrison, Janet Kaufmann, Josie Kearns, Thomas Lynch, John R. Reed, and Stephen Tudor. Each of the editors is also a contributor to this sampling of poems. Styles range from understated to extravagant, from closely observed to freely imagined. Poems are as varied as the Michigan landscape. Remarkable in its scope and quality, Contemporary Michigan Poetry offers an arresting look at Michigan life and a special glimpse at the preoccupations that possess residents on the Third Coast.

Description : The combination of distinct materials is a key issue in modern industry, whereas the driving concept is to design parts with the right material in the right place. In this framework, a great deal of attention is directed towards dissimilar welding and joining technologies. In the automotive sector, for instance, the concept of “tailored blanks”, introduced in the last decade, has further highlighted the necessity to weld dissimilar materials. As far as the aeronautic field is concerned, most structures are built combining very different materials and alloys, in order to match lightweight and structural performance requirements. In this framework, the application of fusion welding techniques, namely, tungsten inert gas or laser welding, is quite challenging due to the difference in physical properties, in particular the melting point, between adjoining materials. On the other hand, solid-state welding methods, such as the friction stir welding as well as linear friction welding processes, have already proved to be capable of manufacturing sound Al-Cu, Al-Ti, Al-SS, and Al-Mg joints, to cite but a few. Recently, promising results have also been obtained using hybrid methods. Considering the novelty of the topic, many relevant issues are still open, and many research groups are continuously publishing valuable results. The aim of this book is to finalize the latest contributions on this topic.
