Description : Isaiah 40-66, by Marvin A. Sweeney, is the nineteenth published volume in The Forms of Old Testament Literature (FOTL), a series that provides a form-critical analysis of the books and units in the Hebrew Bible. Building on his earlier FOTL volume Isaiah 1-39, Sweeney here presents his analysis of Isaiah 40-66 within both the synchronic literary form of Isaiah and the diachronic history of its composition. In keeping with the methodology and goals of the FOTL series, Isaiah 40-66 offers detailed examinations of the formal structure of the chapters covered; the genres that function within these chapters; the literary, historical, and social settings of the text; and the overall interpretation of Isaiah 40-66 and its constituent textual units. Including a glossary of the genres and formulas discussed, this commentary will be a useful resource to anyone wishing to engage more deeply with this central book in the Hebrew Bible.

Description : This commentary explores some of the most thrilling chapters of the Old Testament. The Israelites' exile is at an end, and in Isaiah 40-55 the prophet calls them to leave Babylon. Chapters 55-66 are about how these people deal with aspects of restored life in Jerusalem, the old political and religious centre, but now so different. Here also are significant passages about a Servant of the Lord, and the challenging call to servanthood on the part of God's people. Michael Thompson examines these chapters both against their original backgrounds and also as scripture for God's people today.

Description : Chapters 40-66 of the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, addressed to the Jews in exile in Babylon, belong to a period from about 547 BC when Babylonian power was weakening before the might of King Cyrus of Persia. Isaiah not only saw this as the will of God, but asserted that God was directing events in order that Yahweh's people might be released from exile. The lyrical, exhortatory quality of the earlier chapters in particular resulted from his conviction that it was his task to prepare the exiles for their new role and to restore their faith and confidence. The first volume of Professor Herbert's commentary on Isaiah, dealing with chapters 1-39, was published in 1973. In this second volume, Professor Herbert again introduces the text with a discussion of its nature, form and composition and historical setting. The N.E.B. translation of the text then follows, alternating with sections of commentary in the style now established for this series.

Description : Isaiah 40-66 is not only a well-known part of Christian scripture, but essential background for understanding the New Testament. It is also important because it grew out of the deepest crisis in Israel's history. Modern Christians, too, live in a time of crisis, of deep social and political unrest. Like the Israelites in Babylon, we need to reconstruct our traditional faith, to ask who we are, who God is, and what we must do to serve Him. This guide offers detailed interpretation and commentary on the bible narrative which is supported by notes on the historical and literary background, and on the importance of Isaiah 40-66. Study material includes suggestions for research and discussion.

Description : The early chapters of Isaiah (See also the Geared for Growth study on Isaiah chapters 1 to 39) deal with the punishment due to God's people in rebellion, the later chapters stress the Lord's provision, comfort and deliverance in the coming salvation through the Messiah. It could almost be put alongside the 27 books of the New Testament and is one of the reasons why Isaiah has been called 'The Fifth Gospel' - though written 800 years before the Incarnation. Helpful notes bring the significance of these chapters into focus, and speak clearly to us today. Geared for Growth study materials encourage: A Daily Encounter with God, Group learning and sharing, Spiritual Growth and Church Growth.

Description : In this volume, Walter Brueggemann focuses on Second Isaiah (Isaiah 40-55), believed to be written by a second exilic poet, and Third Isaiah (Isaiah 56-66), a third group of texts that rearticulate Isaianic theology in yet another faith situation. Brueggemann discusses both the distinctiveness of the texts and their canonical relatedness. Books in the Westminster Bible Companion series assist laity in their study of the Bible as a guide to Christian faith and practice. Each volume explains the biblical book in its original historical context and explores its significance for faithful living today. These books are ideal for individual study and for Bible study classes and groups.
