A First Course in Scientific Computing Book Excerpt:

This book offers a new approach to introductory scientific computing. It aims to make students comfortable using computers to do science, to provide them with the computational tools and knowledge they need throughout their college careers and into their professional careers, and to show how all the pieces can work together. Rubin Landau introduces the requisite mathematics and computer science in the course of realistic problems, from energy use to the building of skyscrapers to projectile motion with drag. He is attentive to how each discipline uses its own language to describe the same concepts and how computations are concrete instances of the abstract. Landau covers the basics of computation, numerical analysis, and programming from a computational science perspective. The first part of the printed book uses the problem-solving environment Maple as its context, with the same material covered on the accompanying CD as both Maple and Mathematica programs; the second part uses the compiled language Java, with equivalent materials in Fortran90 on the CD; and the final part presents an introduction to LaTeX replete with sample files. Providing the essentials of computing, with practical examples, A First Course in Scientific Computing adheres to the principle that science and engineering students learn computation best while sitting in front of a computer, book in hand, in trial-and-error mode. Not only is it an invaluable learning text and an essential reference for students of mathematics, engineering, physics, and other sciences, but it is also a consummate model for future textbooks in computational science and engineering courses. A broad spectrum of computing tools and examples that can be used throughout an academic career Practical computing aimed at solving realistic problems Both symbolic and numerical computations A multidisciplinary approach: science + math + computer science Maple and Java in the book itself; Mathematica, Fortran90, Maple and Java on the accompanying CD in an interactive workbook format

Extending a dynamic programming language and runtime environment with access control Book Excerpt:

Complexity in software systems is a major factor driving development and maintenance costs. To master this complexity, software is divided into modules that can be developed and tested separately. In order to support this separation of modules, each module should provide a clean and concise public interface. Therefore, the ability to selectively hide functionality using access control is an important feature in a programming language intended for complex software systems. Software systems are increasingly distributed, adding not only to their inherent complexity, but also presenting security challenges. The object-capability approach addresses these challenges by defining language properties providing only minimal capabilities to objects. One programming language that is based on the object-capability approach is Newspeak, a dynamic programming language designed for modularity and security. The Newspeak specification describes access control as one of Newspeak’s properties, because it is a requirement for the object-capability approach. However, access control, as defined in the Newspeak specification, is currently not enforced in its implementation. This work introduces an access control implementation for Newspeak, enabling the security of object-capabilities and enhancing modularity. We describe our implementation of access control for Newspeak. We adapted the runtime environment, the reflective system, the compiler toolchain, and the virtual machine. Finally, we describe a migration strategy for the existing Newspeak code base, so that our access control implementation can be integrated with minimal effort.

Designing of pre stressed concrete with an internet based software Book Excerpt:

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The increasing interest in the Internet of the recent years results in a growing number of users as well as improved network infrastructure, quality and performance. This is the basis for a new kind of software, which is running via the Internet. That means the software is installed an a server connected to the Internet and accessed and executed by a remote client. Such Internet based software provides several benefits. Once distributed by a server, Internet based software is available world-wide and depending on its implementation it can be executed without previous installation on the client machine. Further software updates and patches are not distributed to the users any more. Only the server has to be updated and the new version is available to all users immediately. For commercial use it is not necessary that customers buy the software any more, they download and pay only the module they need or they pay just for every access with the server application. It is also possible to place a high-performance or application specific computer at the server side and provide computation time for special tasks to the users. Assessment of the Commercial Applicability of Artificial Intelligence in Electronic Businesses Book Excerpt:

Abstract: Artificial intelligence has already been applied to many areas since its official birth in 1956, but most of the applications ended up in great disappointments as the benefits they reaped were very low. Due to this reason the vast interest in applying this relatively young technology to business calmed down in the late seventies when scientists recognized that the current intelligent systems were not yet plug-and-play solutions, hence mature enough to fully meet the business needs and requirements at that time. However, the limited commercial applicability of artificial intelligence in the past has to be rethought today as with the significant progress in artificial intelligence research and the growth of electronic commerce conducted over the World Wide Web new opportunities for business applications of artificial intelligence have emerged consequently. Nowadays horizontal and vertical electronic commerce is significantly driven by intelligent applications. Their employment in electronic businesses may well generate huge returns on investments, providing a technology-based response to increasing competition, the volatility of business models, and the pace of technology change . Despite the wide assumption that artificial intelligence will have a major impact on Internet-related businesses today and especially in the next years to come, it is uncertain to what extent it performs and will perform that way. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse, assess and evaluate the potential of commercial applications of artificial intelligence in electronic businesses. Therefore the main research question of this paper is whether artificial intelligence is reasonably applicable in Internet-related businesses, first in terms of effectiveness and second in terms of efficiency. In the assessment the application of artificial intelligence in electronic businesses is represented by the employment of intelligent agents. In harmony with the major research question emphasized above, the paper provides a thorough discussion about the economic impact of the most common and relevant application types of intelligent agents on electronic commerce environments. In addition the driving underlying technologies of intelligent agents are analysed with respect to artificial intelligence techniques and methods, and current standardisation efforts. [...]

New Trends in Internet Market Book Excerpt:

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Internet. Broadband access. Mobile telephony. Fixed telephony. TV. Google. Yahoo!. Social networks. Mobile network operators. Telecommunication operators. Media conglomerates. Citizen media. All these terms have always been traditionally considered independent, but nowadays the interrelations among all of them happen more often and are becoming deeper: a new global scenario is being defined, in which communications, entertainment and information are converging, being provided by global conglomerates in our PCs, TVs and mobile devices. Nowadays technology advances will soon enable to provide users with the best internet experience on the go . Services hosts, access providers, vendors, media owners and online players now realize that the barriers that traditionally have separated their markets dilute, bringing them all in a common-global market. Internet business models have now to converge with traditional structures and merges and acquisitions happen to reach competitive positions in foreign markets. The paradigm of internet will influence and change the most popular services as they are currently known. Fixed communication providers already suffer a loose of voice revenues in favor of the cheapest online communication. Mobile operators are facing now the same situations and find themselves on a delicate strategic situation: with VoIP nearing a competitive QoS, voice along doesn t seem to be for a long time enough as unique revenue source... Even watching TV will be soon an enriched personalized experience through the new IP end2end platforms. Will the online players be the ones successfully accomplishing a vertical expansion of their business? How will the mobile operators react? Which will be the paper of the network access providers? What about the media and content? How will all that affect the customers? In this document will be described the nowadays situation on the different markets involved in the converging scenario, and how the respective players situate themselves strategically. An initial global point of view will be followed by the definition of strategies and trends of each of them independently, and the determination of the merging points and relations among them. The effort will be focus firstly on offering recommendations and comparisons concerning specific environments. Step by step the basis of the competition environment in the converging market will be defined, offering a strategic map of the [...]
