Description : Excerpt from The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Vol. 3: January, 1876 In choosing the subject, The Brain not the Sole Organ 'of the Mind, it appears to be necessary that I should in the first place, as clearly as possible, express my ideas relative to the connection between the mind and the nervous system, and of the nature of that power which in its full development places man at the head of all other animals. Description : Excerpt from The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 1917, Vol. 46: An American Monthly Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry Founded in 1874; Official Organ of the American Neurological Association, the New-York Neurological Society, Boston Society of Psychiatry and Neurology, the Philadelphia Neurological Society With these broadly biological and sociological phases of our work, however, I am not at this moment concerned. I desire rather to call to vour special attention two apparently opposed tendencies which I may term, first, the tendency to minute classifi cation and. Secondly, the tendency to wide generalization. These two seemingly antagonistic factors are certainly inherent in all progress. Their relation to each other, however, is a matter of the utmost consequence. Since in our search for principles we are in constant danger of being overwhelmed by details. To be more concrete, there appears to be an almost intuitive tendency, even in the trained medical mind, to classify on insufficient evidence, to single out groups of symptoms and to name such symptoms dis eases. By this means it must frankly be admitted that medical knowledge has grown and very possibly it could have grown in no Other way, but it is no less apparent that progress has again and again been checked in its onward course by this bondage to names. Ignoring for the time being conditions primarily manifesting them selves outside the nervous system, there is no difficulty in multi plying examples. Description : Excerpt from The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Vol. 51: An American Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry; January-June 1920 In this paper I wish to Show how the postural tensions Of auto nomic segments, stimulating the proprioceptors buried in their tis sues, and the enteroceptors in the mucous membranes, give rise to afferent streams Of feeling which constitute the affective cray ings (popularly known as emotions or sentiments) and which, as our wishes, determine our thoughts and behavior. I would like to Show how this probably occurs and how we may use the concept in our professional work. Such astute physiologists as Cannon and Carlson, after they had perfected the technique Of studying the gastric motor functions that cause an intragastric itching or crav ing, that is, hunger for food, had to depend upon an introspective study of themselves in order to correlate the type of feeling or craving which was aroused by a certain type of gastric contrae tion. This emphasizes decisively that it is Of the utmost impor tance for the physician to train himself to be able to introspectively study himself if he wishes to understand the influence Of physiolog ical processes upon the content of consciousness, i. E., if he wishes to understand the influence Of his own or the patient's cravings upon thoughts and behavior. The neurologist and physiologist can no Ionger afford to think accurately in neurological or physiological terms and loosely in psychological terms, neither can the psychiatrist or psychologist afford to think carelessly Of the physiological proc esses that determine the content of consciousness. For many rea sons it is hopeless to use such broad, loose, careless terms in discus sion - as mental and physical mind and body, psychic quotients, psychic components, emotional state, physiological changes during emotion, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Description : Excerpt from The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 1892, Vol. 17: A Monthly Periodical As a summary of what has been here stated, it seems to me safe to say that physical culture, systematically and progressively applied, is one of the best means at our com mand for the improvement of nutrition and the furthering of elimination, and'that by its method and persistence it tends to check irregular manifestations of nervous energy and to guide them into normal channels of activity. Description : Excerpt from The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Vol. 6: January-October, 1879 To form a correct idea Of the structure of the different nervous tissues, we must bear in mind that the whole nervous apparatus consists, in its central as well as in its peripheral parts, of only three essentially nervous anatomical elements. These are fibrils, nuclei, and granules, and, moreover, a certain intermediate so-called inter-cellular substance, by means Of which granules, lineally arranged in rows, are united to each other and transformed into fibrils. 'the onlv difference exist ing between the individual nervous tissues consists in the morphological arrangement and mutual relations Of these ele ments. The nerve-medulla and tubular membrane Of the dark bordered nerve fibres, though they may serve some special purpose, must be regarded as non-essential to the liberation and propagation of nervous energy. Description : Excerpt from The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Vol. 58: An American Journal of Neuropsychiatry; July-December, 1923 In the course of an investigation dealing with Danvers State Hospital material, it became necessary to chart out the admission rate for cases in which the diagnosis of dementia precox had been made. The resulting curve is so startling and so difficult to explain (cf. Description : Excerpt from The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 1908, Vol. 35 Sensibility: The tactile sense was found to be absolutely unimpaired in the affected right hand. This sense was tested by the von Frey method; that is, by means of single hairs of different stiffness and also with the camel's hair brush and cotton wool. No difference whatsoever between the sense of tactile sensibility in the normal left hand and affected right hand could be recognized. The slightest touch that could be perceived in one hand could be perceived in the other, and the patient himself could recognize no difference in the tactile perceptions whether tested by a single hair or by the other tests. Temperature sense tested by test tubes filled with warm and cold water, and pain s'ense tested by the prick of a pin were also found to be normal in the affected hand.
