Description : TMS Special Publication 6. This TMS Special Publication comprises a collection of 23 papers with an international authorship reflecting on landmarks in the history and development of Foraminiferal micropalaeontology. The volume is prefaced by an introductory overview that provides a brief and selected historical setting, as well as the intended aims of the book. Selected developments in Foraminiferal studies from a global perspective are presented from the time of Alcide d'Orbigny and the founding of the Paris MNHN collections in the mid-nineteenth century to the use of foraminifera in industry, other museum collections, palaeoceanography and environmental studies, regional studies from the Southern Hemisphere and the rise and fall of significant research schools. The book concludes with a chapter on the modelling of foraminifera. Landmarks in Foraminiferal Micropalaeontology: History and Development will be of particular interest to micropalaeontologists, other Earth scientists, historians of science, museum curators and the general reader with an interest in science.

Description : Studies with the foraminiferida have often been hindered by widely scattered, inaccessible sources. This two-volume reference (text in one volume, plates in the other) examines 3,568 of the world's generic taxa, representing all geologic ages. Covering twice the number of genera as any other available reference, it is by far the most complete source on the foraminiferida.

Description : Why did the British, then the leading nation in science and technology, fall far behind in the race to develop the aeroplane before the First World War? Despite their initial advantage, they were overtaken by the Wright brothers in America, by the French and the Germans. Peter Reese, in this highly readable and highly illustrated account, delves into the fascinating early history of aviation as he describes what happened and why. He recalls the brilliant theoretical work of Sir George Cayley, the inventions of other pioneers of the nineteenth century and the daring exploits of the next generation of airmen, among them Samuel Cody, A.V. Roe, Bertram Dickson, Charles Rolls and Tommy Sopwith. His narrative is illustrated with a wonderful selection of over 120 archive drawings and photographs which record the men and the primitive flying machines of a century ago.As featured on BBC Radio Surrey and in Essence Magazine.

Description : A system of classifying and coding entomological information from the world literature on arthropods which affect the health and comfort of man onto punch cards was developed to provide a method for readily recovering this information for immediate use. More than 700 journals and other scientific publications from which data for coding may be drawn are listed. Titles are arranged alphabetically nd are numbered for entry on punch cards, which also indicate the author and date of publication. A geographic code for the world listing major administrative subdivisions for most countries, indicates the geographical areas for recording entomological data on punch cards. A world map is inclosed to aid in the identification of the major geographic l entries. The classification for subject matter co ins 9 categories of information for which space is assigned on the cards. Included are designations for genus, species, geographical range, seasonal activity, breeding habitat, and disease relationships. (Author).

Description : Often regarded as the 'Cinderella' of palaeontological studies, palaeobotany has a history that contains some fascinating insights into scientific endeavour, especially by palaeontologists who were perusing a personal interest rather than a career. The problems of maintaining research facilities in universities, especially in the modern era, are described and reveal a noticeable absence of a national UK strategy to preserve centres of excellence in an avowedly specialist area. Accounts of some of the pioneers demonstrate the importance of collaboration between taxonomists and illustrators. The importance of palaeobotany in the rise of geoconservation is outlined, as well as the significant and influential role of women in the discipline. Although this volume has a predominantly UK focus, two very interesting studies outline the history of palaeobotanical work in Argentina and China.
