Outlaw The Collected Works of Miguel Pi ero Book Excerpt:

ñA thief, a junkie IÍve been / committed every known sin,î Miguel Pinero sings in ñA Lower East Side Poem.î Part observer, part participant in the turbulent goings-on in his Nuyorican barrio, Miguel PiÐero blasted onto the literary scene and made waves in the artistic current with his dramatic interpretations of the world around him through experimental poetry, prose, and plays. Portrayed by actor Benjamin Bratt in the 2001 feature film ñPiÐero,î the poetÍs works are as rough and gritty as the New York City underworld he wrote about and loved. ñSo here I am, look at me / I stand proud as you can see / pleased to be from the Lower East / a street fighting man / a problem of this land / I am the Philosopher of the Criminal Mind / a dweller of prison time / a cancer of RockefellerÍs ghettocide / this concrete tomb is my home.î His depictions of pimp bars, drug addiction, petty crime, prison culture and outlaw life all drawn from first-hand experience astound the faint-hearted, as PiÐero poetizes an outlaw vernacular meant to shock proper, bourgeois culture. This long-awaited collection includes previously published and never-before-published poems; ten plays, including ñShort Eyes,î which was later made into a film and won the 1973-1974 New York Drama CriticsÍ Circle Award for Best American Play, ñThe Sun Always Shines for the Cool,î and ñEulogy for a Small Time Thief.î A co-founder of the Nuyorican PoetÍs Cafe, PiÐero died at the age of 41, leaving behind a compelling legacy of poetry and plays that reveal the harsh, impoverished lives of his urban Puerto Rican community.

Liberian Girl Book Excerpt:

Set during the early years of the First Liberian Civil War (1989 – 1996), this startling debut play by Diana Nneka Atuona tells the story of fourteen-year-old Martha who flees her country, disguised as a boy, when it's invaded by rebels. Investigated and cruelly interrogated, she is separated from her grandmother as they attempt to escape the conflict under false identities and, convincing in her boy's apparel, Martha is forced to join the rebels' army. Exposed to the violence of this brutal and seemingly misguided conflict, both as victim and perpetrator, Martha's experience of the First Liberian Civil War is one of excessive cruelty and, in particular, abuse against female prisoners of war. Liberian Girl received its world premiere at the Royal Court Upstairs, London in December 2014.

American Horrors Book Excerpt:

Since the release of Rosemary's Baby in 1968, the American horror film has become one of the most diverse, commercially successful, widely discussed, and culturally significant film genres. Drawing on a wide range of critical methods---from close textual readings and structuralist genre criticism to psychoanalytical, feminist, and ideological analyses---the authors examine individual films, directors, and subgenres. In this collection of twelve essays, Gregory Waller balances detailed studies of both popular films (Night of the Living Dead, The Exorcist, and Halloween) and particularly problematic films (Don't Look Now and Eyes of Laura Mars) with discussions of such central thematic preoccupations as the genre's representation of violence and female victims, its reflexivity and playfulness, and its ongoing redefinition of the monstrous and the normal. In addition, American Horrors includes a filmography of movies and telefilms and an annotated bibliography of books and articles about horror since 1968.

Call Me Sergeant Rock Book Excerpt:

Author Dan Rodgers was in college taking pre-med, had a possible professional baseball career in the offing, and was driving race cars hoping to get on the NASCAR circuit when he received his dreaded draft notice. Two days before he married his lovely wife, Sue, Dan was drafted into the Army. The author and a few friends were sent to Vietnam on the adventure of a lifetime. Dan was a squad leader and sergeant in the Vietnam War and was directly involved in the Tet Offensive in 1968. At one point during Tet, his company lost 126 men in less than two hours. Dan earned the Silver Star when he and a comrade rescued five soldiers trapped in an armored tank. He was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts. At one point, Dan was asked to become a war correspondent and carry a mini camera. He kept notes on whatever paper he could find to write on, but writing the names of dead comrades was tough. Dan lives with the pain of losing his personal friends. His wife is a testament to his nightly torment, as he still suffers with nightmares and flashbacks of the war. Writing this book started as an exercise to relieve stress. Dan would present his writings to doctors, who in turn suggested that he form a chronological order of events. The book Call Me Sergeant Rock was born.

Changing history is serious business, but saving history just might prove to be the most dangerous work of all! America is ripe for a new leader—one who represents the will of the people. Crispin Locke, a vile and feared man, is elected America’s first ever Supreme Leader. Locke wins the adoration of the country with his “Three Self” propaganda, which enforces peace, unity, and tolerance. But in order for his message to keep its strength, Locke must remove any evidence of Christianity found within the symbols of America and restrict religious speech in houses of worship. In this new perilous world, Father John Baxter is about to take a stand. Motivated by the historic documents given to him by his grandfather, the priest will take to the pulpit of his government-regulated church for one final sermon. But his plan takes an unexpected turn, and he soon finds himself on a journey that he could never have imagined. Is it fate or is it God’s providence? Whatever it is, Father John Baxter’s path will ultimately lead him to that last place on earth he ever wanted to be—Washington, DC!

A new family. Two dads. Surprises. Forgiveness. When I was eight years old, mum and aunt Jen took me to meet my dad. Logan Drake was just a name, a few pictures and some stories that my mum told me at bedtime. I knew my mum was sick, she never hid it from me and I knew, even though she did try to cushion the reality, that she wasn’t going to be with me for much longer. That’s why she went to talk to my dad. Moving out to Drake Wines wasn’t as hard as I was expecting. I had an instant family, Aunts, uncles, cousins and not one but two dads who loved me unconditionally. Missing my mum didn't hurt as much with them around. The letters started on my tenth birthday. By my eighteenth I didn't want them anymore. On my wedding I learned to appreciate every single one of them. ‘Love Mum’, became something that I looked forward to. LORI’S MEMORIES is the second novella in the Drake Wines Novella Series and should be read after WINERY. It’s a love story of a different kind, no steam or romance but still full of love and hope. But Crime Does Punish Book Excerpt:

"So, as you see, I am familiar with the case. However, we can’t discuss it unless you learn more about some other court cases, so that you can compare your father’s trial with other, more baffling cases, and see it in the context of the madness that reigned at the time." In Ján Johanides riveting Slovak novel, you the reader are thrust in medias res, assuming the role of a silent partner in a one-sided conversation with someone you know nothing about. As the pages turn, you must grasp onto significant details to piece together who you are, who the narrator is, and why you have sought him out. As the story unfolds you come to learn that the old archivist, who can’t seem to stay on point, has both a tragic history and the keys to unlocking your family’s darkest secret. A secret that may or may not involve the Czechoslovak secret police, American and Soviet intelligence, Israeli politics, and a tire full of 90,000 dollars. Set after the fall of communism and the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, casual paranoia permeates the novel as it reveals how the madness of the Communist era has led to the instability of the present. Written in 1995, this haunting novel that evokes the spirit of John Le Carre and the style of Carlos Fuentes shines a searchlight on issues that plague post-Communist Europe today.

Blood Bullets And Bodies Book Excerpt:

Fifth Edition The true story of Blood, Bullets and Bodies: a critical multimedia exposé about the factors subverting the political will to act in the best interest of the poor, even when explicit just cause exists for such altruistic action to take place… Blood, Bullets and Bodies is a strange and paradoxical story that needs to be read as much as it needs to be told. It is a riveting story of sex, violence, political intrigue and survival by any means necessary. The book is a literary mirror that provides a revealing and frightening reflection for a self-destructing society to see itself profiled in the throes of its own possible demise. Sure to stir controversy, the new book contains a compelling rendition of the historical circumstances that have made crime and violence – bullets, blood and dead bodies – the number one problem in late 20th and early 21st century Jamaica. Despite the historic One Love Peace Concert and the Peace Truce in 1978, young gunmen seem to have gone wild ever since. Using a variety of sophisticated methodological tools including literary sources, oral interviews, ethnographic studies and the lyrics of popular Reggae songs, Imani Tafari-Ama details the influences and implications of this violent social discourse for everyday performances of femininity and masculinity in Kingston’s inner-city environment as well as in the wider Jamaican society. Tafari-Ama’s stated objective in publishing her thesis as a book is to separate fact from fiction in order to find real and enduring solutions that will reduce the distressing flood of blood, bullets and bodies that is overflowing the streets of Kingston. She hopes that by highlighting some of the facts and exposing much of the fiction about life below the poverty line, her provocative book will be a catalyst in motivating the political and community willpower necessary to find and implement the real-time solutions that she proposes in her suggested Options for Development.
