The book questions some of the fundamental concepts and principles currently used to manage information that revolve around business processes. Specifically, it addresses the argument to more effectively evaluate the contributions of human and systems capital (which are defined) to a process, highlighting the need to make more conscious decisions about what role each will perform in the developed process. Covers the integration of the intellectual capital with business processes Provides practical guidance on analysis of the complete business process (including products and customers) from a human and systems capital perspective Provides practical frameworks that enable readers to implement the suggested strategies regarding the development of intellectual capital round business processes, which are explained throughout the book

Dynamic Business Process Management in the Knowledge Economy Book Excerpt:

This book describes modern dynamic business process management (dynamic BPM), which is considerably different from traditional BPM from 20, 10, or even 5 years ago. It demonstrates why traditional BPM is not sufficient in the knowledge economy (KE), while also highlighting the opportunities provided by dynamic BPM – the form of management that practitioners and academics deal with on a daily basis. This involves mastering and implementing e.g. case management, process mining, and RPA, and integrating them with knowledge management. But more importantly, dynamic BPM makes full use of the dynamism of knowledge workers: the people who actually create innovative products and services tailored to the specific needs of clients. The book was primarily written for those managers who see advantageous opportunities amidst the ongoing changes. Accordingly, it focuses more on innovations emerging from practice than on theoretical, academic reflection. In addition to helping organizations operating in the KE to prepare for and implement process management, the book is intended as a source of inspiration for process management researchers and iBPMS system vendors.

A Mosaic of Computational Topics from Classical to Novel Book Excerpt:

This book, A Mosaic of Computational Topics: from Classical to Novel, is a collection of papers published to honor Professor Jetty Kleijn on the occasion of her 65th birthday. The scope and reach of her research is truly broad. She has made significant and lasting contributions in several research areas, both through the solving of challenging problems and in her pioneering of new research directions. She has published influential papers contributing to the foundations of computer science, in particular, in the area of formal languages and automata theory; to concurrency theory, in particular, Petri nets; and to natural computing, in particular bio-inspired computing and the computational modeling of bio-processes. A significant part of Professor Kleijn’s research portfolio is interdisciplinary, including her work on the Petri net modeling of biological processes and the development of novel models of information processing in bio-systems such as reaction systems. She is also passionately engaged in promoting the involvement of women in computer science. Jetty and her work are well-recognized by the scientific community, a fact demonstrated by the enthusiastic response to the invitation to contribute to this book, and the 14 carefully refereed papers collected together here explore a number of research topics that are either directly or indirectly related to research directions pursued by Jetty Kleijn in the course of her career.

Enabling Process Management for Loosely Framed Knowledge intensive Processes Book Excerpt:

This book is a revised version of the PhD dissertation written by the author at the Department of Business Informatics and Operations Management at Ghent University in Belgium. It addresses shortcomings in Business Process Management concerning loosely framed knowledge-intensive processes, which are characterized by their numerous valid process variants and their reliance on knowledge workers to apply their knowledge to decide on a suitable process variant that fits the context of a specific process execution. The goal was to lay the foundation for a process-aware business process management (IT-)system to support such processes. Several proof-of-concept implementations have been made for the core components and were evaluated in the domain of the healthcare. Starting from an artificial, but realistic, case about patients that arrive in the emergency room with suspected arm fractures and later progressing to a case study of the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the emergency department of a real hospital, using data from their patient files. In 2020, the PhD dissertation won the “CAiSE PhD award”, granted to outstanding PhD theses in the field of Information Systems Engineering.
