Description : This book examines the operational dynamics of patriarchy that is deeply woven into the Indian cultural fabric and its persistence in spite of women advancing in Human Development Indices. In studying the situation of women of the Catholic Syrian Christian community of Kerala, South India, as a case of analysis, Kochurani Abraham identifies caste consciousness and religious prescriptions of this community as the main factors that intersect with gendered identity construction and succeed in keeping women within its patriarchal confines. While women do engage in negotiating patriarchy through what can be termed simulative, tactical, and ‘agensic’ bargains, this remains a ‘politics of survival’ as it does not challenge the established gender order. In this context, making a shift from ‘politics of survival’ to a ‘politics of subversion’ is imperative for challenging persisting patriarchies.

Description : 'Saare Jhan Se Achchha Hindostan Hamara' (Our India is the best among all lands in the world) said Dr Iqbal, the poet of East. Now this poetic line has evolved into a symbolic expression for the greatness of our country. This is sung frequently and used widely for an easy, prompt and soft pronouncement of the greatness and novelty of our country. No doubt, India is great and illustrious. Its on top as far as its heritage, history, philosophy and culture is concerned. Our team of authors and editors has made their best efforts to depict the same greatness of our country and nation in this series. Here is a treasure, bound into books. This is the best example of 'knowledge in a nutshell'. Needless to say that India is known for its unity in diversity, with its kaleidoscopic variety, it emerges as a wonderful nation. With one of the oldest civilisations in the world, this country has a rich cultural heritage. After independence, through 58 years. India has achieved multifaceted socio-economic progress in addition to creating a niche in the international community and the new world order. India is a federation of states and union territories. As of now, there are 28 states and 7 union territories in the country, all these states have made tremendous progress in almost every sphere since 1947, when the nation had attained freedom. Various Indian states have shown an all round advancement and stupendous progress in political, cultural, economic and social areas. India is a vast country. All states enjoy autonomy to a great extent and flourish in their own manner. Some states are similar to each other while others are quite different from the rest. People of one state have little authentic knowledge about other states. This situation, in some cases, creates problems and difficulties with no ready solution at hand. Hence this comprehensive and exhaustive encyclopaedic work. Every state and union territory has been covered in a separate book, each book, devoted to one state or U.T. covers life and people under various heads-Land, People, Heritage History, Geography, Economy, Polity, Tourism, etc. The "Beautiful India" series is an asset for all scholars, researchers, teachers, students and of course, the general readers.

Description : This book examines localism as a political idea and policy approach and explains what localism is about, why it is growing in importance and how it relates to other themes in politics. Illustrated with case studies from the United Kingdom, mainland Europe and the Indian sub-continent, the book analyses localism in conceptual and theoretical terms and locates it within the overall landscape of political thought. Key themes covered in the book include place, space and scale; decentralization and devolution; multi-level governance; public value; democracy and empowerment; and political design. With the focus on the bottom-up, constructivist aspects of localism, the book argues that localism is most likely to work successfully in a political order where sovereignty is ‘distributed’ across various social spheres and levels of government. It offers a comprehensive view of localism by synthesizing its various strands and creating a distinctive framework for design and evaluation. This book will be of particular interest to scholars, students and practitioners of localism, particularly within local and regional government, public administration and policy, human and political geography, and urban studies. Description : Our present is characterized by a heretofore unknown pressure on the environment, raising our awareness of the fragility of our planet and our responsibility to preserve it. How to reconcile this exigency with the challenge of demographic explosion? How to ensure a use of natural resources for human wellbeing that is not entirely dictated by market forces? How to rethink the relation between man and land and the environment? The terms ‘governance’ and ‘sustainable development’ contribute to a reshaping of the Law that is aimed at articulating contemporary political, social, economic and environmental issues. The focus of this book is on the major stakes involved and on the way to elaborate possible modes of thought and action through the exploration of African and Indian situations by means of an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach. By promoting a ‘South – South’ dialogue, it also decenters global reflections that continue to be largely dominated by the ‘North’.

Description : The well-known 'Kerala model' of development has been the focus of discussion for the past several years and the first edition of this book, published in 1999, was a significant contribution to that debate. This revised edition focuses not so much on the more well-researched determinants of Kerala's success but on the hitherto ignored economic backwardness of the state, the economic reforms implemented since the early 1990s, the broad economic changes during the 1990s, and the economic problems and development issues facing Kerala today.

Description : In India, land policies have been undergoing a paradigm shift since the economic reforms of the early 1990s. Conclusive land titling or guaranteed title to land has emerged as an alternative policy option to the redistributive land reform agenda before economic liberalization, and marks a historic reorientation of land policy. Land Reforms to Land Titling: Emerging Paradigms of Land Governance in India studies this reorientation. Would the neoliberal policy of secure individual property rights in land address diverse land-related questions in India? Whose interests will a conclusive titling policy serve, given unequal land holdings? How are capitalist or market imperatives of efficiency and growth bypassing social concerns? This book addresses these and other important questions through an in-depth study of not only India’s land governance history but also the experiences of other developing countries. The book also talks about policy implications and will be an invaluable read for academics and policymakers alike.

Description : This volume analyzes centre-state dynamics in India placed against the backdrop of the election of a Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata (BJP) government to central power in 2014. It reflects on how centre-state relations have been shaped by the legacy of nearly two decades of broad-based coalition government at the centre and the concurrent and ongoing liberalization of the Indian economy. To this purpose, the volume engages with several relevant questions linked to the political economy of Indian federalism and its ability to manage ethno-linguistic difference. Did liberalization strengthen the economic or political autonomy of the Indian states? What impact did party system change have on the capacity of parties in central government to influence the actions of state governments? How did party system change and liberalization influence the fiscal and financial autonomy of the states and the capacity of the centre in planning and social development? Did both processes strengthen the autonomy of Chief Ministers in foreign policy-making? What are the strengths and weaknesses of Indian federalism in ethno-linguistic conflict management and what do the recent split of Andhra Pradesh or the proposed formation of Bodoland tell us about the dynamics underpinning the management of ethno-linguistic difference in contemporary India? The chapters originally published as a special issue of India Review.
