Description : This book is a celebration of life. Its astonishing view is from the perspective of someone living a simple, isolated life in the Rocky Mountains as a "mountain man." Sylvan Ambrose Hart was born in the Oklahoma Territory in 1906. In the 1930's, while still a young man, he walked into the Rocky Mountains and designed a unique life for himself in the wilds - hunting, fishing, trapping, panning gold, crafting his own tools, weapons, shelter, and clothes. For almost fifty years he lived the life of a reclusive mountain man --eventually gaining national fame as "Buckskin Bill, Last of the Mountain Men." In 1973 another young man, studying philosophy in a private college back east, found that he could no longer abide being shackled by the conventional wisdoms of our culture. To the dismay of all who knew and loved him, he dropped out of college and headed for the mountains. He caught a train cross-country to Montana, then hopped a bus southbound skirting the Rocky Mountains. At one point he simply stepped off the bus and walked into the mountains with only a backpack, machete, and knife (no food or gun) determined to learn what the mountains offered to teach --or die trying. After a few months of eating rattlesnakes, ants and field mice, this struggling newcomer to the mountains (the author) discovered the now old and grizzled "mountain man" living not only successfully but quite flamboyantly in the depths of the Rocky Mountain wilderness on the "River of No Return." Buckskin was an extraordinary man. Anyone who ever met him walked away with stories and memories to be cherished for a lifetime. Here are my favorite memories of the Last of the Mountain Men.

Description : Nicodemos (1749-1809), a monk of Saint Athos dedicated to asceticism and learning, was one of the most influential Orthodox writers of the last two centuries. His Handbook, written during the Age of Enlightenment in Europe, shares an exalted vision of human nature, but a vision that proceeds from the truths of revelation as interpreted by the Greek Fathers, not Descartes.

Description : Appalachian Mountain Religion is much more than a narrowly focused look at the religion of a region. Within this largest regional and widely diverse religious tradition can be found the strings that tie it to all of American religious history. The fierce drama between American Protestantism and Appalachian mountain religion has been played out for nearly two hundred years; the struggle between piety and reason, between the heart and the head, has echoes reaching back even further--from Continental Pietism and the Scots-Irish of western Scotland and Ulster to Colonial Baptist revival culture and plain-folk camp-meeting religion. Deborah Vansau McCauley places Appalachian mountain religion squarely at the center of American religious history, depicting the interaction and dramatic conflicts between it and the denominations that comprise the Protestant "mainstream." She clarifies the tradition histories and symbol systems of the area's principally oral religious culture, its worship practices and beliefs, further illuminating the clash between mountain religion and the "dominant religious culture" of the United States. This clash has helped to shape the course of American religious history. The explorations in Appalachian Mountain Religion range from Puritan theology to liberation theology, from Calvinism to the Holiness-Pentecostal movements. Within that wide realm and in the ongoing contention over religious values, the many strains of American religious history can be heard.

Description : It has been a difficult, sometimes painful, story to tell in its entirety, but I have done my best to be accurate both in facts and in dates, for I feel that l owe the truth to the many who have become valued acquaintances, and sometimes friends. All these have constantly requested more news of my "Green Dwelling" and my discovery of a fatal neurological disease previously unknown to Western medicine. This book is for them, in lieu of letters that I ought to have written and did not. It is also my concern to produce innocent amusement, unrestricted by canon or precedent, for those who require some relaxation from the fatigue generated by so many parasitic forms of life in this less than perfect world. My peers, the medical scientists, who read this will realize that this book is neither a scientific treatise, nor a balance-sheet of all the achievements and failures of medical science, but a presentation of the major implications of the factors that continually determine our medical ethics - including some of the less prizeworthy drawbacks.

Description : LAUGHING IN THE FACE OF TERRORISM is a collection of five books under a new title making the works affordable and a bargain for teachers and students of literature, culture, diversity seekers and the general public. The search for harmony is a main theme in Tejani's work and here he speaks of it in words destined to be classic: Music has the sweetness of the September sun, the tenderness of a bird call in the woods, the depth of unknown oceans and the serenity of the earth's swift strong glide across space. You will marvel at the incredibly comic mission of the new Indian immigrant in America to teach Americans how to speak English properly. Or rejoice in the friendship between Washington, America's First President and a Muslim boy on Mount Rushmore. Even wonder at Shakespeare committing suicide on the stage. For variety, Tejani teases the women of the world by comparing their scent to the aroma of rain on earth; and exposes the vulnerability of men with satire on their pre-occupation with the 'thermostat between their legs'. In this collection Ba Tejani has set out with mischief in his heart, irreverent wisdom in his hands and a tickling, teasing imagination which carries you on with a smile and a large question. Just what is he upto? What gifts of humanist synthesis does he have in his heart that we emerge refined and delighted and not peeved after reading one of his stories or watching his play? 451 Pages

Description : In 1863 a meeting takes place between legendary war leaders--a secret alliance that will never show up in any American history books. A clandestine arrangement has been struck for a single chance to heal a war-torn nation. The mission is to bring the greatest prize in the world back to American soil-remnants of pre-history's greatest ship and most startling mystery. The prize may lie on a mountain top inside the fierce Ottoman Empire, yet the men who seek it are only days away from trying to kill one another. In 2007, America's darkest agency known to only a privileged few as the Event Group, has been tasked by the President to bring home a famous former astronaut who was on a mission to bring back the greatest biblical artifact-Noah's Ark. It will be up to the newly-installed Director of Security at Department 5656, Major Jack Collins and his team of brilliant men and women, to rescue the archeological expedition from forces that will kill to keep the mysterious artifacts inside the territorial borders of Turkey. THE MOUNTAIN is the latest entry in a series that ratchets up the suspense with each new installment. Combining the action of James Rollins and Matthew Reilly, David L. Golemon sets the bar even higher with his New York Times bestselling series.
