Description : 'Library' imposes upon itself a lot of definitions, meanings, connotations made by professionals, experts in library science, organizations and so on. There is a good scope of misinterpretation in determining the definition of a library, this is due to establishment of many so-called public libraries in India and abroad by voluntary organizations, philanthropists etc. during the eighteenth and nineteenth century which were open to public irrespective of class, creed, sex, educational attainment etc.Hence, for a library system, the elements are libraries at different levels with their branches and service units. These should be interlinked so as to form an integrated system or network of services. "Such a library system can be compared with a large irrigation system. It needs a hand-work with a costly dam and a large number of distributaries through which water can reach every bit of land."Now-a-days, the informational role of the library is being highlighted. In fact, in broad sense, it may be said that, the role of library is informational. But it is of two-fold: One is, to provide information, expressed or unexpressed to a person and another is to provide him with the informati

Description : Learn leadership skills from achievements at special libraries in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central America! Leadership and Management Principles in Libraries in Developing Countries is a compilation of success stories epitomizing management and leadership strategies from developing nations around the globe. This book focuses on library administrators from Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central America who have significantly transformed their library services in spite of limited funds and a lack of resources. You'll learn about their achievements, their techniques, and the strengths and skills they used--which can help you become a stronger leader at your own library. Leadership and Management Principles in Libraries in Developing Countries is a collection of selected entries to the Special Libraries Association Leadership and Management Division's 2003 International Paper Competition for special librarians in developing countries. Each author describes the effective leadership and management that made their special library initiatives successful, providing references, tables, step-by-step instructions, and handy checklists for other librarians to use. In Leadership and Management Principles in Libraries in Developing Countries, library officials discuss the development of successful programs at special libraries such as: the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, India--where a team of people with diverse backgrounds worked together to digitally modernize their traditional library the Agricultural Libraries and Special Libraries in Tropical Biology located in Indonesia--where special librarians found innovative ways to access funding support and expertise from foreign institutions, international relief agencies, and library associations the Information Resource Centre at The Mildmay Centre in Kampala, Uganda--where the new Mobile Patient Library Services project provides information materials to patients with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers the American Cultural Center Library (now called the Rosa Parks Library) in Niamey, Niger--where the library was restructured from a simple reading room into a diverse cultural resource of exhibitions, seminars, and multilingual reference materials the Federal Ministry of Industry headquarters Library in Nigeria--where the library transformation was made possible through good leadership style, managerial expertise, and effective staff organization the University of Swaziland Libraries in Swaziland--where a strategic planning initiative helped the library widen Internet access, secure subscription funding for database access, and purchase updated equipment to enrich the instructional, research, and administrative functions of the library This book represents a body of practical experience, problems, lessons, and techniques that can be shared and tried by those who want to know more about or deal with the special needs and circumstances of librarians in developing countries. Leadership and Management Principles in Libraries in Developing Countries will show you how to improve both service and outreach to your local community by becoming a leader at your special library, whether you are the librarian, mid-level manager, director, or information consultant. Library science faculty and students will also find that this book illustrates the benefits of good leadership and management.

Description : Academic and public libraries are much different today than they were even two decades back. Academic as well as public libraries nowadays have to face constant change. As libraries modernize, they face an increasingly harsh budget environment, as well as technological disruption in media, scholarship, and education. The political, social, and technological environment is one of transformation and uncertainty. College and university libraries are at the center of changes to the library system. Academic libraries must serve groups of users with diverse information needs and research skills. In addition to the structural challenges facing all libraries, academic libraries must also confront a rapidly changing educational and publishing environment, in which the value and cost of a university education is being questioned. A higher demand for accountability means academic libraries must prove their value and the value of the university system. The growing demand for publishing services suggests new roles and responsibilities for academic libraries in the near future. Each institution requires a unique vision for creating an intellectual center for 21st-century teaching, learning and collaboration. Moreover, that vision must reflect the institution's own voice and ask what it means to support the creation of academic scholarship. Libraries must now foster a positive ecology of relationships, connectivity settings, and tools layered together to foster discovery and learning within the context of a dynamic academic framework. But today, public libraries are at a turning point. The way we access and consume information has changed dramatically in the 21st century, and this presents major challenges and opportunities for public library systems across the world. The advent of new technologies has changed some of our reading habits. But our need for shared, community-centered spaces to find information and connect with others is unlikely to change any time soon. To survive in the digital age and stay relevant, public libraries need to be brave and innovative. They must embrace both the physical and virtual.Reflecting on the Future of Academic and Public Libraries gives an overview about leadership competences needed to succeed with deliberate large-scale changes in libraries.

Description : Librarianship in further education colleges and the former polytechnics is closely involved with the learning process: the book offers the experience and inspiration of educational managers and librarians committed to learner-centred institutions, examining the opportunities that exist for librarians to contribute to learning and influence its development. It shows that the acceleration of learner-centred and flexible styles of learning has brought libraries centre-stage in all tertiary (ie post-16) education.

Description : In order to collect information on online bibliographic searching activities in smaller academic libraries, a survey was conducted in December 1982 of 252 college and university libraries located in public and private institutions with enrollments of between 1,000 and 5,000 students. An 88.5% response rate was achieved. It was found that 65% of the respondents offered online search services; fewer than half of the librarians in each institution were involved in online searching; 73% of the libraries providing online services charged or planned to charge faculty and students for these services; DIALOG was by far the most frequently used vendor; the average direct cost per search varied widely; and the connect time for most libraries (74%) averaged less than 15 minutes. This publication briefly outlines the survey methodology and findings; a sample questionnaire with responses noted is provided. Also presented are copies of online searching policy statements, promotional items, search request forms, transaction log forms, billing forms, evaluation forms, and statistical report forms from over 50 institutions. Description : The numerous vital applications of complementary DNA (cDNA) technology have changed dramatically as the technology has advanced over recent years. In cDNA Libraries: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers provide current techniques that reflect the latest advances in the construction and application of cDNA libraries. The first half of the volume covers improved approaches to some of the most basic elements of creating cDNA libraries, while the second half casts a much wider net and includes visionary applications of cDNA technology which were either unforeseen or technically impractical until recently. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, cDNA Libraries: Methods and Protocols serves as an ideal guide to all scientists seeking to advance this important technology and provide answers to the enduring fundamental questions of biology.
