Summary of Jack Mayer s Life in a Jar Book Excerpt:

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 When Liz began The Irena Sendler Project, she was surprised to find that it had become a lot more than just a simple extra-curricular National History Day project. It had taken on a life of its own as The Irena Sendler Project. #2 When Liz was five, her mother left her behind to go stay with her boyfriend. She never returned. Her father was afraid of her, and he rarely visited. She was sent to many counselors and social workers who tried to help her understand her feelings. #3 Grandpa Bill had problems with his daughter, Liz. She was a difficult child who had issues in school. She couldn’t sit still, didn’t pay attention, and didn’t do anything she didn’t want to. She was often in fights. #4 Liz was assigned to Mr. Kayhart’s class again, which was difficult for her. She eventually transferred into Mr. Conard’s Creative Social Studies class, which was more to her liking. Mr. Conard’s class focused on projects that dealt with the civil rights struggle, the Depression, and issues of diversity and tolerance.

Identity Security and Democracy Book Excerpt:

Many people think of personal identification as only part of the security/surveillance apparatus. This is likely to be an oversimplification, which largely misrepresents the reality. 'Personal identity' means two separate concepts, namely that an individual belongs to specific categories and also that this individual is distinguished by other persons and understood as one. In other words, there are two different aspects involved in personal recognition: distinguishing between individuals and distinguishing between sets of people. The latter is likely to be the real issue. Dictatorships of any kind and totalitarian regimes have always ruled by categorizing people and by creating different classes of subjects. When rules want their subjects to humiliate themselves or their fellows, they create categories of people or exploit existing categories. From social and political points of view this allows a process known as 'pseudospeciation' to be produced. Pseudospeciation is a process which turns social and cultural differences into biological diversities. It promotes cooperation within social groups, overpowering the selfish interests of individuals in favor of collective interests, yet it also inhibits cooperation between groups, and it fosters conflict and mistrust. This work is dedicated to the thorny and multifaceted relations between identity, security and democracy. Identity, Security and Democracy shows how full of nuances the process of human identification is.

More than 70 percent of America's 60 million young people believe they can make a difference in their communities, and the numbers support their assertions. Teenagers spend 2.4 billion hours annually in volunteer service, and their labor is worth $34.3 billion to the U.S. economy. Volunteering brings emotional satisfaction, provides opportunities for learning skills that can be used in the job market, and helps teens to make career choices. Volunteering: The Ultimate Teen Guide is a complete guide for teens who want to volunteer. Young people get a complete picture of what volunteering involves, including the personal commitment and the physical and emotional stamina, as well as the positive_and sometimes negative_consequences. Volunteering is a wonderful resource for both teens as well as those who work with teens on how to use one's time and energy to positively impact society and to gain personal satisfaction from helping others.

The Awakening Earth Book Excerpt:

Originally published in 1982 The Awakening Earth explores the idea of the Earth as a collective, self-regulatory living organism, and considers in this context, the function of the human race. The book provides an exploration of humanity’s potential and explores the possibility of mankind’s evolutionary future. Drawing on the work of physicists, psychologists, philosophers and mystics, the book argues that humanity is on the verge of another evolutionary leap and explores evolution in the context of spiritual growth, arguing that widespread inner awakenings could lead to a more analogous society, functioning as a single social super-organism, much in the way cells in a body function as a biological organism.

Dark Nights Of The Soul Book Excerpt:

A 'dark night of the soul' is not a psychological syndrome, but a quest for meaning during life's darkest hours: the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, ageing and illness, career disappointments or just an ongoing dissatisfaction with life. Thomas Moore's extensive experience as a psychologist and theologian has taught him that the dark night is a challenge to restore ourselves and to become someone of substance, depth and soul. By using these trying times as an opportunity to reflect and delve into the soul's deepest needs, we can find a new understanding of life's meaning. Dark Nights of the Soul has its roots in a favourite chapter in Thomas Moore's million copy bestseller, Care of the Soul. In this beautifully-written and thought-provoking work he explores our contemporary anxieties and insecurities and shows how these metaphoric dark nights can become transforming rites of passage.

My Life in a Jar Book Excerpt:

"King of the country, boss of the stix!" Hip Hop has long made braggadocio a work requirement, often for the same "show" factor that arrives when aspiring rappers rent jewelry and nice cars to wear and drive in their music videos. With Big Smo, everything about him as a superstar is authentic: from the farm in middle Tennessee he shot the majority of his music videos, television show, and continues to live and raise his three daughters on to the family Moonshine recipe and even the head of a live chicken he personally cut off to great controversy in his now legendary Kickin' It in Tennessee video. By far the biggest star of the country rap genre he helped invent and put on the national map with the help of well over 70 million Youtube views, he remains the first and only country rapper to date to ever sign a major label record deal with Warner Bros. With a catalog of 10 albums, including highlights like American Made, Kuntry Livin, which spawned the hits Workin' and Anything Goes, We the People, and Special Reserve among other fan favorites, Smo cultivated a fervent fanbase--affectionately referred to as Kinfoke--and brought them to the mainstream as the grassroots fire was soon blazing hotly enough to capture the Wall Street Journal's attention. A natural ambassador for his listeners' lifestyle with a star personality so charismatic he wound up with his own A&E reality show--another first for his genre--more than 2 million fans made it so officially when The Big Smo Show debuted in June 2014 on A&E and ran for two seasons. Now, Smo tells all in My Life in a Jar: The Book of Smo.

The Revelation of God And as Human Reception Book Excerpt:

A resourceful and thorough study of an important issue in New Testament and systematic theology, this book is one that takes human action and reception into full account. Where does God's revelation reside--in the event or in the interpretation? If history is about the creation of meaning, what does it mean to say that God reveals God's self in history? Dan Via addresses these and related issues in this original volume.

Discovering the Joys of Life Book Excerpt:

This is an invitation that, before the big sleep, we must learn to discover the joys of life where peace, love, and serenity thrive; that God’s love is the foundation of all forms of love and a driving force to share the love through our compassion and charity. Being self-aware is an essential step in our understanding of who we are, what we do, and why we do it, and what gives meaning to us in life. The mystery of prayer is key to understand the mystery of human life; that living the present moment is the grace that we have every day. Being grateful of life, of people, of events, and moments that we are called to take an adventure and learn to be playful as children of God. I love this book. So simple and powerful! Thank you Fr. Joe for refreshing my spirit with your words and life. Bo Sanchez Best Selling Author and Inspirational Preacher Fr. Joe Blas Nolasco’s book is a very helpful guide to living a truly meaningful, happy, and fruitful life. Joe writes engagingly and challenges you to reflect and act on your own life. Reading this book will be a grace for you as it has already been for me. Most Rev. Teodoro Bacani, D.D. This book is a ray of hope in this troubled time. It will restore our conviction and strengthen our faith in a God who assures us, “BE NOT AFRAID!” (Mt. 14:27) Most Rev. Gerardo A. Alminaza, D.D.
