Life is a spectacular, wild, surprising, gut-wrenching, and fun-filled ride—so why is our society riddled with mental illness, addictions, despair, unhappiness, stress, rage, and hate? The vast and wide-reaching benefits of a bold outlook on life are not fully understood, and it’s time to change that. In Awakening to More, Drs. Adele von Rüst McCormick and Marlena Deborah McCormick reveal how to become wiser about yourself and life. Going beyond self-help, the McCormicks reject a paint-by numbers approach to living. Instead, they offer life lessons from real encounters with people and animals. They explore the animal and spirit side of human nature, because learning about the many faces of our lower and higher minds can keep us grounded. They illuminate vital wisdom for everyday living, relying on their knowledge of the classics in psychology, spirituality, and philosophy and on their experiences traveling into the heart of nature, especially human nature. The lessons presented here can help encourage your original and spontaneous edge and increase your sense of optimism, even during challenging times. This book offers narratives and wisdom designed to help you fully awaken to and appreciate the vast possibilities that are just within your reach in life. o Seeing our problems as a problem is a problem. Why not awaken to more? o Instead of trying to control or fix life, prepare to handle and enjoy what comes your way.

Perhaps the contributions of South American archaeology to the larger field of world archaeology have been inadequately recognized. If so, this is probably because there have been relatively few archaeologists working in South America outside of Peru and recent advances in knowledge in other parts of the continent are only beginning to enter larger archaeological discourse. Many ideas of and about South American archaeology held by scholars from outside the area are going to change irrevocably with the appearance of the present volume. Not only does the Handbook of South American Archaeology (HSAA) provide immense and broad information about ancient South America, the volume also showcases the contributions made by South Americans to social theory. Moreover, one of the merits of this volume is that about half the authors (30) are South Americans, and the bibliographies in their chapters will be especially useful guides to Spanish and Portuguese literature as well as to the latest research. It is inevitable that the HSAA will be compared with the multi-volume Handbook of South American Indians (HSAI), with its detailed descriptions of indigenous peoples of South America, that was organized and edited by Julian Steward. Although there are heroic archaeological essays in the HSAI, by the likes of Junius Bird, Gordon Willey, John Rowe, and John Murra, Steward states frankly in his introduction to Volume Two that “arch- ology is included by way of background” to the ethnographic chapters.

The first modern scholarly synthesis of animal domestication Across the globe and at different times in the past millennia, the evolutionary history of domesticated animals has been greatly affected by the myriad, complex, and diverse interactions humans have had with the animals closest to them. The Process of Animal Domestication presents a broad synthesis of this subject, from the rich biology behind the initial stages of domestication to how the creation of breeds reflects cultural and societal transformations that have impacted the biosphere. Marcelo Sánchez-Villagra draws from a wide range of fields, including evolutionary biology, zooarchaeology, ethnology, genetics, developmental biology, and evolutionary morphology to provide a fresh perspective to this classic topic. Relying on various conceptual and technical tools, he examines the natural history of phenotypes and their developmental origins. He presents case studies involving mammals, birds, fish, and insect species, and he highlights the importance of domestication for the comprehension of evolution, anatomy, ontogeny, and dozens of fundamental biological processes. Bringing together the most current developments, The Process of Animal Domestication will interest a wide range of readers, from evolutionary biologists, developmental biologists, and geneticists to anthropologists and archaeologists.

Llamas are known as the peculiar, long-necked animals that infamously spit and sometimes hum. They're often confused for Alpacas, their close relatives, both are members of a group called camelids, which also includes camels. The Alpaca and the Llama were both domesticated several thousand years ago by the people of the Andes Mountains of South America. They were treasured by the ancient Inca civilization.

This unique book combines a colourful history of Bolivian politics with some of the most advanced quantitative techniques yet developed for socio-political risk analysis. This is the story of how a foreign-owned private sector mining company (Minera San Cristobal - MSC) earned, lost, and regained its social licence to operate. Robert Boutilier and Ian Thomson, leading experts in stakeholder management theory and practice, transform the concept of the SLO from a metaphor to a management tool. The book traces the development of new concepts and measures in the field of stakeholder engagement while following the narrative of a community struggling with a fundamental change in its identity from a declining, malnourished llama-herding village to one of the richest towns in Bolivia. This remarkable story will inspire practitioners in the field of stakeholder management; it will provide an invaluable roadmap for professionals working on land re-use projects in the energy, mining, and conservation sectors; it will make stakeholder relations concepts and techniques accessible to students through an engaging and in-depth case study; and it will open your eyes to one of the most fascinating accounts of how two different cultures collided and then came together to address different but aligned goals.
