Description : This book contains important review articles on topics in and closely related to the Representation Theory of Algebras. Most of them contain major new results not published elsewhere. It appears at a time of increasing interaction between the Representation Theory of Algebras and other areas of mathematics (e.g. group representations, quantum groups, vector bundles, and C* saveebras). Several of the articles are concerned with such interactions or are motivated by problems arising from them.

Description : This book presents an account of several conjectures arising in commutative algebra from the pioneering work of Serre and Auslander-Buchsbaum. The approach is via Hochster's 'Big Cohen-Macaulay modules', though the complementary view point of Peskine-Szpiro and Roberts, who study the homology of certain complexes, is not neglected. Various refinements of Hochster's construction, obtained in collaboration with Bartijn, are included. A special feature is a long chapter written by Van den Dries which explains how a certain type of result can be 'lifted' from prime characteristic to characteristic zero. Though this is primarily a research monograph, it does provide introductions to most of the topics treated. Non-experts may therefore find it an appealing guide into an active area of algebra.

Description : Traditionally, the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence has been a tool that has enabled the computation of generators and relations to describe homotopy groups. Here a natural geometric description of the sequence is given in terms of cobordism theory and manifolds with singularities. The author brings together many interesting results not widely known outside the USSR, including some recent work by Vershinin.

Description : These two volumes contain survey papers given at the 1991 international symposium on geometric group theory, and they represent some of the latest thinking in this area. Many of the world's leading figures in this field attended the conference, and their contributions cover a wide diversity of topics. Volume I contains reviews of such subjects as isoperimetric and isodiametric functions, geometric invariants of a groups, Brick's quasi-simple filtrations for groups and 3-manifolds, string rewriting, and algebraic proof of the torus theorem, the classification of groups acting freely on R-trees, and much more. Volume II consists solely of a ground breaking paper by M. Gromov on finitely generated groups.

Description : The concepts of a locally presentable category and an accessible category are extremely useful in formulating connections between universal algebra, model theory, logic, and computer science. The aim of this book is to provide an exposition of both the theory and the applications of these categories at a level accessible to graduate students. The concepts of lambda-presentable objects, locally lambda-presentable categories, and lambda-accessible categories are discussed in detail. The authors prove that Freyd's essentially algebraic categories are precisely the locally presentable categories. In the final chapter, they treat some advanced topics in model theory.

Description : The theory of prehomogeneous vector spaces is a relatively new subject although its origin can be traced back through the works of Siegel to Gauss. This is the first book on this topic, and represents the author's deep study of prehomogeneous vector spaces. Here the author's aim is to generalize Shintani's approach from the viewpoint of geometric invariant theory, and in some special cases he also determines not only the pole structure but also the principal part of the zeta function.

Description : Algebraic geometers have renewed their interest in the interplay between algebraic vector bundles and projective embeddings. New methods have been developed for questions such as: What is the geometric content of syzygies and of bundles derived from them? How can they be used for giving good compactifications of natural families? Which differential techniques are needed for the study of families of projective varieties? These questions are addressed in this cohesive volume, where results, work in progress, conjectures, and modern accounts of classical ideas are presented.

Description : Following their introduction in the early 1980s, o-minimal structures have provided an elegant and surprisingly efficient generalization of semialgebraic and subanalytic geometry. This book gives a self-contained treatment of the theory of o-minimal structures from a geometric and topological viewpoint, assuming only rudimentary algebra and analysis. It starts with an introduction and overview of the subject. Later chapters cover the monotonicity theorem, cell decomposition, and the Euler characteristic in the o-minimal setting and show how these notions are easier to handle than in ordinary topology. The remarkable combinatorial property of o-minimal structures, the Vapnik-Chervonenkis property, is also covered. This book should be of interest to model theorists, analytic geometers and topologists.

Description : This book offers a new algebraic approach to set theory. The authors introduce a particular kind of algebra, the Zermelo-Fraenkel algebras, which arise from the familiar axioms of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory. Furthermore, the authors explicitly construct these algebras using the theory of bisimulations. Their approach is completely constructive, and contains both intuitionistic set theory and topos theory. In particular it provides a uniform description of various constructions of the cumulative hierarchy of sets in forcing models, sheaf models and realizability models. Graduate students and researchers in mathematical logic, category theory and computer science should find this book of great interest, and it should be accessible to anyone with a background in categorical logic.
