She needed a fresh start… ICU Nurse Sadie Montgomery moved to New Orleans after her entire world fell apart. The idea was borne of desperation as she sank deeper into a depression so deep and dark, she had stopped feeling. But it wasn’t until she crossed paths with Ram that she finally felt a spark of life return. The only problem is, she doesn’t want to be dependent upon anyone. The pain of losing it all is still too fresh. Not to mention, in Ram’s world, the women submit themselves body and soul. He wasn’t looking for love… Former Army Ranger, Ramsey O’Malley, is not looking for a long-term commitment from a woman beyond a scene or two at Club Underworld. He doesn’t have the time nor the inclination to begin something he cannot finish, not as a single dad with a thriving psychology practice. Except, he is drawn to his newest patient. She’s forbidden, like the apple in the garden of Eden, and all he wants to do it take a bite. But they could not deny their desire… When Sadie makes a surprise appearance at Club Underworld looking to take a walk on the wild side, Ram knows he cannot let another man have her. He wants to be the one to introduce her to submission. But can he convince her to submit? And will just one night be enough? Publisher’s Note: This steamy contemporary romance contains elements of power exchange.

Previously published as Practical Emotional Structure 2. Do your characters suffer from boring emotional arcs? Have your readers said your characters feel forced or inconsistent, or wondered why your hero and heroine love each other? Do you really understand the transformational character arc, conflict, or where motivation comes from? And have you ever wanted to know the actual mechanics of how to manipulate story emotions so you can produce consistent results? Included in this book: Why readers love or reject books. Why backstory is important. How to use a simple doodle to figure out what your characters will do, all the secondary influences on their actions, what needs to happen in the story, and how much word count you'll need to accomplish your goal. How to scale conflict up or down to hit your targeted word count (or in other words, how to create conflict for one book or a multi-book arc). How to fix character arcs quickly and easily. How to get across your character's emotions. How to understand why your character is doing something, and how you can fix it so they do something else, organically. How the placement of an inciting incident changes the story (or one story, three different ways). Lots of pictures. Written in an easy, conversational style, Backstory, Motivation and Conflict makes it easy to understand the theory you need to write emotionally resonant books, each and every time.

During two decades of fighting in Afghanistan, U.S. service members confronted numerous challenges in their mission to secure the country from the threat of al-Qaeda and the Taliban and assist in rebuilding efforts. Because the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan occurred simultaneously, much of the American public conflated them or failed to notice the Afghanistan War; and most of the war's archival material remains classified and closed to civilian researchers. Drawing on interviews and letters home, this book relates the Afghanistan War through the experiences of American troops, with firsthand accounts of both combat and humanitarian operations, the environment, living conditions and interactions with the locals.

The incredible stories of twenty-two lone survivors of maritime disasters are presented in this collection of war and peacetime incidents. The dramatic accounts--including those of a British sailor who survived 133 days at sea on an open raft and a German sailor who spent 28 hours in the ocean without a life preserver--are based on a wide array of sources, including interviews with the survivors and their families and official records to back up their accuracy. Most took place in World War II, when the navies and merchant fleets of many nations roamed the seas. Each story is one of boundless courage, a tenacious will to survive, and, in many cases, good luck.

The OCS at Fort Knox Reunion held at the historic Sheraton Gunter Hotel, San Antonio, Texas, from August 18 to 21, 2016, was the inspiration for this book that hails the stories of Fort Knox OCS Candidates who lived to return from the Vietnam War and other postings in the Cold War. Their stories about survival and readjustment to life in their homeland inspired me. These stalwarts took to the stage and delivered personal sagas that left the audience spellbound. The writing muse nudged me. Stories were gathered from these honorable men. Exciting highlights unfold about their lives before, during, and after the Vietnam War. Why stop? Stories were sought from ordinary people, men and women, who served on battlefields; Gold Star moms who grieved the loss of military pilots; a spouse whose husband was missing for thirty-plus years; a mother whose son has never returned; World War II Italy warriors fighting alongside their brothers; the elite 10th Mountain Division Alpine Mountain Men; the US Coast Guard with daring rescues and routine lives that were anything but routine; and the average citizen, pilots facing horrific crash scenes, naval maneuvers offsetting war-meet these unsung heroes, the fabric of our United States of America.

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage.” — Anais Nin Looking for the confidence to face life's challenges? Feeling the need for new inspiration and adventure? Do you know what it takes to be really brave? Courage comes by taking action before we are forced to do so. And in the words of Eleanor Roosevelt: “We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face...we must do that which we think we cannot.” Courage, also known as bravery, will, and fortitude, is the ability to confront fear, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. Physical courage is courage in the face of physical pain, hardship, and threat of death, while moral courage is the ability to act rightly in the face of popular opposition, shame, or discouragement. Authors Mary Beth Sammons and Nina Lesowitz have gone to the front lines of adversity and fear to surface the brave hearts who took action before they were forced to, confronting and overcoming their fears in ways that inspire us all. From world-class athletes to spiritual teachers, to cancer patients, to ordinary people who took extraordinary action to transform their lives, these courage warriors will show you how to turn apprehension into action. Enriched with motivational quotes, expert advice, and power practices, this courage guidebook will show you how to live your life with guts and gusto.

Petty Officer John G. Makie of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve did not realize what he was getting into in the summer of 1942, when he gave an oath at Camp X under the Canadian Secrets Act of 1939. He was only seventeen years old and determined to defend the freedom of Canada. He did so, in the most extraordinary way. He was special agent number 034, of the secret service group - under water demolition squadron. These secret agents were very highly trained commandos, who came from Canada, Britain, and Australia. These fearless men were scuba divers trained in small arms and hand-to-hand combat. They entered enemy occupied countries by the sea, carried out acts of sabotage and clandestine warfare. Then, they quickly disappeared into the night, back to the sea. These men had no name or rank, just mission after mission in Russia, Norway, Sweden, and France. This brave group of men, personally encouraged by Sir Winston Churchill, Sir William Stephenson, and Lord Louis Mountbatten set out to set Europe ablaze. When the war was over in Europe they set out to mop up Burma and Hong Kong. Yet no record of fallen buddies can be found. The year 1996 marks the end of the fifty-year gag order by oath and with it, the truth is finally set free. The Spy Worker reveals secrets of a time long, long agoall accounted by the lone survivor, now in his eighties which are finally free to share with friends and family. After many therapeutic sessions over the last ten years, events of this forgotten group are starting to surface. Although there are no records of their missions or medals of valor ever rewarded, The Spy Worker pays tribute to the unsung heroes of war in remembering their notable acts of bravery.

The beginning of the 21st century was a time of unprecedented events in American society: Y2K, 9/11 and the wars that followed, partisan changes in government and the rapid advancements of the Internet and mass consumerism. In the two decades since, popular culture--particularly film--has manifested the underlying anxieties of the American psyche. This collection of new essays examines dozens of movies released 1998-2020 and how they drew upon and spoke to mass cultural fears. Contributors analyze examples across a range of genres--horror, teen rom-coms, military flicks, slow-burns, and animated children's films--covering topics including gender and sexuality, environmental politics, technophobia, xenophobia, and class and racial inequality. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'}

"This book describes in detail how music and sound function as a constituent part of the prestige combat film's larger work of memorialization in the cultural realm of commercial cinema. As Rikke Schubart and Anne Gjelsvik note, historians must deal with 'the complexity of history, war, heroism, patriotism, memory, and the process of their representation.' Hymns for the Fallen traces an expressive sonic continuity in this 'process of representation' for serious war films. The three elements of the soundtrack--dialogue, sound effects, music--are treated in detail in the chapters which follow, although music proves to be of particular interest."--Site de l'éditeur.
