Made in India Book Excerpt:

Made in India examines seemingly disparate and high profile events in postcolonial India that captured national and transnational/diasporic interest since the 1990s: The emergence of the Indian homosexual, the new trans/national heterosexual woman, lesbian suicides, marriage and kinship contracts in small towns around India and the simultaneous evolution of the modern homophobia and lesbian NGOs. These events demonstrate the material, political, and cultural contexts within which postcolonial subjects negotiate their lived experiences within moments of decolonization and recolonization.

The Made in India Manager Book Excerpt:

Who are Made-in-India managers? What do they do differently? Over the last fifty years, several Indians have occupied top positions in multinationals across the globe. Shantanu Narayen at Adobe, Satya Nadella at Microsoft, Padmasree Warrier at NIO and Sundar Pichai at Google- there are, today, innumerable instances of CEOs born and bred in India, helming S&P’s 500 companies. What accounts for such a prominent presence of Indian professionals across the world today? In The Made-in-India Manager, two stalwarts of Indian business and academics examine this little-studied phenomenon and present a compelling argument: that a unique combination of factors has led Indian management thought and practices to become a ‘soft power’ with the potential to decisively impact global managers of tomorrow. Drawing on their long and varied experience among corporates, the authors explore: • the deep cultural influences that engender a sharp competitive instinct and an astute business perspective; • the circumstances that inspire a high degree of resourcefulness in challenging situations; • the ability to ‘think in English and act in Indian’, which enables flexible functioning in multicultural work environments; • and, importantly, how today’s young managers can build on these advantages and bring to the table their own generational learning, attitudes and capabilities to ensure future success. Thought-provoking and provocative, this fascinating treatise takes a long view of the Indian professional’s path to definitive career success, and makes for compulsory reading for every management practitioner.

Economic Cooperation Between Singapore and India Book Excerpt:

Asian interregional economic cooperation has assumed greater prominence with the rise of Asia’s two giant economies of China and India. The economic liberalization of China’s economy in 1979, followed by India in 1991, signalled the presence of business opportunities to foreign investors - including those from Asia. This book examines the growing economic relations between India and Singapore which has culminated in a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), signed by both economies in June 2005. Using the information technology sector as the main case study of the ‘alliance’ between Singapore and India, the book examines the challenges that both have overcome to expand their bilateral trade. In the process, Singapore has become one of the top five foreign investors in India. The CECA is important as it is the first free trade agreement that Singapore signed with a developing country; and furthermore it provided a blueprint for India to conclude similar FTAs with other ASEAN members. This book provides a competitive analysis for intra-regional foreign direct investment. Faizal Yahya demonstrates that the economic relationship between Singapore and India illuminates how both economies are attempting to meet future challenges. It will be of interest to scholars of international business studies, cross-cultural management, international trade, international relations, information management and South and Southeast Asian Studies.

India Pakistan Trade Normalisation Book Excerpt:

This book explores the unfinished India–Pakistan Trade normalisation agenda (building upon the themes covered in the book “India-Pakistan Trade: Strengthening Economic Relations” published by Springer in 2014) and discusses the steps that must be undertaken in order to move the bilateral engagement forward. Given the commencement of bilateral state-level talks and the Indian government’s emphasis on South Asian integration, it adds impetus to the trade liberalisation process, while also providing essential recommendations for policymakers in both countries. The unfinished agenda faces obstacles such as the list of items for which export from India to Pakistan continues to be restricted; lack of land borders and seamless cross-border transport services, which hampers the realisation of trade potential; negative reporting in the media, which influences traders’ perceptions; and the continued occurrence of informal trade resulting from inadequacies of formal trade relations. The book examines various sectors, including the agricultural, textiles, automotive and pharmaceutical industries, given their predominance on the list of restricted items for bilateral trade. It also covers studies on unconventional and under-researched themes concerning informal trade, informational barriers to India–Pakistan trade, and opening new land borders for trade – all of which can play a facilitating role in realizing the untapped trade potential between India and Pakistan. The book also includes the second round of the India–Pakistan trade perception survey, which identifies impediments to India–Pakistan bilateral trade and assesses the change in traders’ perceptions since the first round of the survey, which was published in 2014.

Made Only in India Book Excerpt:

What makes Darjeeling tea, Pashmina shawl, Monsooned Malabar Arabica coffee and Chanderi saree special? Why is it that some goods derive their uniqueness through their inherent linkage to a place? In a pioneering study, this book explores this intriguing question in the Indian context across 199 registered goods with geographical indications, linked with their place of origin. It argues that the origin of these goods is attributed to a distinctive ecology that brews in a particular place. The attributes of their origin further endorse their unique geographical indications through legal channels. Drawing from a variety of disciplines including geography, history, sociology, handicrafts, paintings, and textiles, the author also examines the Geographical Indications Act of 1999, and shows how it has created a scope to identify, register and protect those goods, be they natural, agricultural, or manufactured. The work presents a new perspective on the indigenous diversities and offers an original understanding of the geography and history of India. Lucid and accessible, with several illustrative maps, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers in the social sciences, environmental studies, development studies, law, trade and history.

India In Edinburgh Book Excerpt:

Roger Jeffery in this book has brought together 10 original, well-researched and well-written essays which bring to life the presence of India in the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh. On the surface Edinburgh is a purely Scottish city: its ‘India’ past is not easily visible. Yet, from the late 17th century onwards, many of Edinburgh’s young men and women were drawn to India. The city received back money and knowledge, sculpture and paintings, botanical specimens and even skulls! Colonel James Skinner, well-known for establishing Skinner’s Horse, brought his sons to Edinburgh for their schooling. Though Sir Walter Scott visited India only in his imagination (and tried to stop his own sons going there) he crafted a dashing India tale involving Tipu Sultan. The money from India helped create Edinburgh’s New Town, Edinburgh’s internationally-renowned schools (whose former pupils careers ranged from tea-planters to Viceroys) and people who came to Edinburgh from India established Edinburgh’s second women’s medical college. There are many such hidden stories of Edinburgh’s India connections. In this path-breaking book they are brought to life, using novel approaches to look at Edinburgh’s past, to see it as an imperial city, a city for which India held a special place. Focusing on the interactions between individual lives, social networks and financial, material, cultural and social flows, leading experts from Edinburgh’s history provide fascinating detail on how Edinburgh’s links to India were formed and transformed. It informs contemporary understanding of citizenship, gender rights and social identities and is published at a time of increased global uncertainties related to changing civic space, political tensions, a downturn in the world economy and the rise of populism. India and Bangladesh are key contexts, not the least because of rapid (and uneven) economic and social development but their contrasting experiences of democracy and discrimination and inequality faced by dierent groups and communities.
