Description : First published in 1999, Making Foreign People Pay deals with the recovery of monetary claims in cross-border legal relations and contains the results of a comparative empirical research of debt recovery procedures of three countries with different socio-legal environments, Germany, England and Turkey. In order to analyse judicial debt recovery of cross-border claims, court statistics and files have been evaluated. The data show an infrequent use of the courts in all three countries. It seems that legal efforts aiming at facilitating international procedures have not been successful. But court procedures for the recovery of monetary claims are now to a large extent interchangeable with what may be called ‘privatised methods of debt collection’, including modern financial services such as factoring, forfaiting and commercial debt collection. Empirical evidence shows that such privatization of debt collection is a strong trend in cross-border debt collection. The book is an empirical contribution to the ongoing discussion of globalization processes and describes an important field of the globalization of law.

Description : Since the fall of communism, public opinion in Russia, including that of a now more diverse elite, has become a substantial factor in that country's policymaking process. What this opinion might be and how it responds to American actions is the subject of this study. William Zimmerman offers important and sometimes disturbing insight into the thinking of citizens in America's former Cold War adversary about such matters as NATO expansion. Drawing on nearly a decade of unprecedented surveys he conducted with a wide spectrum of the Russian public, he gauges the impact of Russia's opening on its foreign policy and how liberal democrats orient themselves to foreign policy. He also shows that insights from the study of American foreign policy are often "portable" to the study of Russian foreign policy attitudes. As Zimmerman shows, the general public, which had a modest but real role in foreign policy decision making, tended much more toward isolationism than did the predominant elites who steered Russia's foreign policy in the 1990s. Interspersing smooth prose with a wide array of richly informative tables, the book represents an invaluable opportunity to discern probable shifts in Russian foreign policy that domestic political changes would bring. And it powerfully suggests that the West, by forging its own policies toward Russia with more prudence, can have a say in the outcome of the great choice facing Russia--whether to forge ahead with democracy or slip back into authoritarianism.

Description : This new book takes as its focus a simple yet critical question: Does foreign direct investment lead to weakened environmental regulation, thereby turning developing countries into "pollution havens"? The debate over this question has never before been the focus of a book about China. Phillip Stalley examines the development of Chinese law governing the environmental impact of foreign investors, describes how regional competition for investment has influenced environmental regulation, and analyzes the environmental practices of foreign and Chinese companies. He finds only modest evidence that integration with the global economy has transformed China into a pollution haven. Indeed, after China opened its domestic market, the entry of foreign films largely strengthened the environmental protection regime, including the oversight of foreign firms' environmental practices. Nevertheless, foreign firms (and the competition to lure them) have posed new challenges to controlling industrial pollution. Stalley identifies the conditions under which foreign investment contributes to and undermines environmental protection, offering readers a solid understanding of China's environmental challenges. He also builds on existing theory and provides hypotheses that can be tested with other developing nations.

Description : Many American Presidents were Rhodes Scholars. Is this a coincidence? How about the United World Colleges? There have been wealthy and benevolent people in the past who set up schools and programs because they wanted young people to see other cultures, meet other people and develop a united view of humanity. I was an international student. It wasn’t that big of a deal, going from Halifax, Canada to Gainesville, Florida but I did live in the International Student House on University Avenue near NW 4TH St. with a hundred guys from all over the world where I learned that we’re all the same. Countries are just artificial borders. It was a hassle though to do all that paperwork then have to buy medical insurance on top of it. I say if you got the means and the guts, go for it. The Council On International Educational Exchange (CIEE) offers many travel programs, work exchange programs and discount tour packages to students worldwide. They also offer educational tours abroad for groups of adults.

Description : Annotation For more than 30 years, Congress and the Nation has been America's most trusted reference work on the decisions and debates in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. This concise and reliable reference encompasses the entire spectrum of American politics and is the perfect starting point for research on Congress. No library attempting to document American political affairs, no scholar tracing the chronological development of legislation, and no student of contemporary affairs should be without this impressive one-stop guide. Together with the other eight volumes in the series, Congress and the Nation IX offers an invaluable chronicle of the post-World War II era -- and the 10 presidencies from Truman through Clinton that have defined it. Congress and the Nation is the only congressional reference that allows readers to take as broad or as narrow a focus as they wish, and to look at the long history of issues. In compiling Congress and the Nation IX, the book editors at Congressional Quarterly have condensed major legislative, presidential, and political coverage during the 1993-1996 period into a single 1,296-page volume. Readers are given both an overview of the four-year period and detailed chronologies of congressional action in every major subject area. Congress and the Nation IX chronicles the legislative and public policy issues considered by Congress during President Clinton's first term. Written in the CQ tradition of thorough reporting and easy-to-understand language, this volume includes: -- A general survey of the politics of the period -- from the Republican "Contract with America", to the line-item veto, to the continuing debate about congressional distric lines.-- Key votes selected by CQ editors are noted in the articles and included in the appendix.-- Presidential speech texts: a generous selection of the most significant texts from President Clinton's first term.
