Description : Using a detailed personally-assembled data set on the performance of collegiate and professional basketball players over the 1997-2010 period, we conduct a very direct test of two questions. Does performance in the NCAA "March Madness" college basketball tournament affect NBA teams' draft decisions? If so, is this effect the result of decision making biases which overweight player performance in these high-visibility college basketball games or rational judgments of how the players later perform in the NBA? The data provide very clear answers to these two questions. First, unexpected March Madness performance, in terms of unexpected team wins and unexpected player scoring, affects draft decisions. This result persists even when models control for a direct measure of the drafted players' unobserved counterfactual - various mock draft rankings of where the players were likely to be drafted just prior to any participation in the March Madness tournament. Second, NBA personnel who are making these draft decisions are certainly not irrationally overweighting this MM information. If anything, the unexpected performance in the March Madness tournament deserves more weight than it gets in the draft decisions. Finally, there is no evidence that players who played in the March Madness tournament comprise a pool of players with a lower variance in future NBA performance and who are therefore less likely to become NBA superstars than are players who do not play in MM. Players with positive draft bumps due to unexpectedly good performance in the March Madness tournament are in fact more likely than those without bumps from March Madness participation to become one of the rare NBA superstars in the league.

Description : Nothing explains America better than college football. This illustrated ebook lays out the history of big-money amateurism via fiction and non-fiction at the same damn time. The Sinful Seven is about control and capital, but also about bandidas, explosions, zombies, mystical technology, haunted Western mythology, bizarre cuisine, college football internet jokes, and a real bastard or two. It's like this: There is a train. We're gonna try and rob it. Along the way, we'll learn about NC State's stolen Orange Bowl, all the moments that could've resulted in something besides the NCAA, and SMU ponying up 'til the end. Who are we? Spencer, Richard, Jason, and Alex have written about college football for years, while Tyson has made a lot of cool art about pretty much every sport. The Sinful Seven is good, actually "Come for Spencer with an Old West yarn that’s actually about the NCAA’s Sanity Code. Stay for Richard on Jack Trice." -- Andy Staples "You should do yourself a favor and check this out." -- Mike Golic Jr. "Oh you haven't bought The Sinful Seven yet? Do you even like college football?" -- Michael Felder "Extremely good and wild." -- Jordan Ginsberg "I don’t know when I last anticipated a book this much or enjoyed one on this level. College football with cowboys, zombies, witches, and a sci-fi allegory for athlete transfers and schools changing conferences. Seldom do I read something so relevant to society that doesn’t depress me. There’s a lot to love about this project." -- Kevin Fox "It's good. Buy it." -- Charles McDonald "I laughed a lot. I learned a lot, too. The way it weaves real-life history, clever symbolism, and straight-up fiction together is beyond impressive. It’s weird. It’s chaotic. It’s impactful." -- Justin Ferguson "Purchase The Sinful Seven today or your favorite team will lose to their rival every game for the next decade." -- Harry Lyles Jr. "Amazing! Just a fun read." -- Caroline Darney "There exists space for comedy in tragedy. The one only heightens the effect of the other, and it’s this tension that brings The Sinful Seven home." -- Jim Lohmar "You all should purchase The Sinful Seven." -- David Hale "It’s good. You need it." -- Sarah Kelly "It's the fever dream college football book we all need right now." -- Ace Anbender "Official review: it is good." -- Alex McDaniel "A fun and easy read as both a college football history and an Old West fiction novel." -- Chris Vannini "Ever get just punched in the mouth by how awesome a book is?" -- The Tailgate Society "It rules." -- Jon Bois Also, Ira Glass and Paul Finebaum have said the name of this book out loud.

Description : Media attention can play a profound role in whether or not officials act on a policy issue, but how policy issues make the news in the first place has remained a puzzle. Why do some issues go viral and then just as quickly fall off the radar? How is it that the media can sustain public interest for months in a complex story like negotiations over Obamacare while ignoring other important issues in favor of stories on “balloon boy?” With Making the News, Amber Boydstun offers an eye-opening look at the explosive patterns of media attention that determine which issues are brought before the public. At the heart of her argument is the observation that the media have two modes: an “alarm mode” for breaking stories and a “patrol mode” for covering them in greater depth. While institutional incentives often initiate alarm mode around a story, they also propel news outlets into the watchdog-like patrol mode around its policy implications until the next big news item breaks. What results from this pattern of fixation followed by rapid change is skewed coverage of policy issues, with a few receiving the majority of media attention while others receive none at all. Boydstun documents this systemic explosiveness and skew through analysis of media coverage across policy issues, including in-depth looks at the waxing and waning of coverage around two issues: capital punishment and the “war on terror.” Making the News shows how the seemingly unpredictable day-to-day decisions of the newsroom produce distinct patterns of operation with implications—good and bad—for national politics.

Are there valuable lessons from the major and minor leagues for university, high school and other amateur sports programs? How do sports teams generate a profit? While the examples are drawn from the business of baseball, the lessons are applicable to other sports and many retail businesses.

Description : Blending critical theory, conjunctural cultural studies, and assemblage theory, Making Sport Great Again introduces and develops the concept of uber-sport: the sporting expression of late capitalism’s conjoined corporatizing, commercializing, spectacularizing, and celebritizing forces. On different scales and in varying spaces, the uber-sport assemblage is revealed both to surreptitiously reinscribe the neoliberal preoccupation with consumption and to nurture the individualized consumer subject. Andrews further probes how uber-sport normalizes the ideological orientations and associate affective investments of the Trump assemblage’s authoritarian populism. Even as it articulates the regressive politicization of sport, Making Sport Great Again serves also as a call to action: how might progressives rearticulate uber-sport in emancipatory and actualizing political formations?

There’s something about her that makes him believe she’s the one. Unfortunately, Lance—Christian’s best friend—has set his sights on the sweet blonde as well. Instead of pistols at dawn, the two friends come up with a deliciously erotic answer to their shared dilemma—if the shy beauty will accept their racy proposal. Full Position - Though Bella has crushed on Justin and Ned since her first day on the job, she’s smart enough to know a ménage with her hot bosses is probably number one on the list of workplace no-nos. But a genius wouldn’t say no to their exceptionally tempting offer — a no-holds-barred night of wicked fantasies at a local sex club. Everything Nice - After Alex confesses that he wants both her and his best friend, Charlie, in his bed, Allie skips town like a thief in the night. Now, Allie is back in their lives, all grown up and more alluring than ever. What starts as a night of three friends catching up turns into intimate explorations in Charlie’s truck…and Alex’s shower…and his king-size bed… This anthology will be available for a limited time only, so act fast.

Description : Data Analytics: A Small Data Approach is suitable for an introductory data analytics course to help students understand some main statistical learning models. It has many small datasets to guide students to work out pencil solutions of the models and then compare with results obtained from established R packages. Also, as data science practice is a process that should be told as a story, in this book there are many course materials about exploratory data analysis, residual analysis, and flowcharts to develop and validate models and data pipelines. The main models covered in this book include linear regression, logistic regression, tree models and random forests, ensemble learning, sparse learning, principal component analysis, kernel methods including the support vector machine and kernel regression, and deep learning. Each chapter introduces two or three techniques. For each technique, the book highlights the intuition and rationale first, then shows how mathematics is used to articulate the intuition and formulate the learning problem. R is used to implement the techniques on both simulated and real-world dataset. Python code is also available at the book’s website: http://dataanalyticsbook.info.

Description : Abstract: In men's college basketball, the National College Athletics Association (NCAA) tournament to determine the Division I national champion is part of a highly publicized and lucrative cultural phenomenon called "March Madness". For schools and coaches, especially those in major conferences, there is tremendous pressure to succeed and advance. Fan participation is another major component of March Madness. Before the tournament, millions of fans fill out empty brackets attempting to predict the outcome of all 63 games, often betting money on their predictions. There are many theories about how to fill out the brackets, ranging from arbitrary (choosing teams based on jersey color) to historically justified (choosing teams based on poll rankings). Some theories are based on historical precedent or statistical modeling, but there are many other theories about different predictors that have no statistical basis and yet are widely followed. The purpose of this study was to statistically test many prominent theories and then compare and combine the variables to create a model to most accurately predict success.

Description : On football weekends in the United States, thousands of fans gather in the parking lots outside of stadiums, where they park their trucks, let down the gates, and begin a pregame ritual of drinking and grilling. Tailgating, which began in the early 1900s as a quaint picnic lunch outside of the stadium, has evolved into a massive public social event with complex menus, extravagant creative fare, and state-of-art grilling equipment. Unlike traditional notions of the home kitchen, the blacktop is a highly masculine culinary environment in which men and the food they cook are often the star attractions. Gridiron Gourmet examines tailgating as shown in television, film, advertising, and cookbooks, and takes a close look at the experiences of those tailgaters who are as serious about their brisket as they are about cheering on their favorite team, demonstrating how and why the gendered performances on the football field are often matched by the intensity of the masculine displays in front of grills, smokers, and deep fryers.

Description : Isiah Daniels, an intelligent, articulate, athletic black man, from the projects, was recruited to play basketball at the University of Miami by their largest booster, Donovan Taylor, a white entrepreneur who eventually became the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the State of Florida. Isiah, after obtaining his MBA, was hired by Donovan to eventually run his publically held company. Isiah, with Donovan’s bigoted consent, also married Donovan’s eldest daughter, Sophie Taylor, an attorney at one of the largest and most prestigious law firms in Miami. Both of those events were fulfilled for Taylor’s political ambition to become the Governor of the State. Isiah, over Donovan’s objections, began to hire many blacks to work for Donovan’s company. Some of whom were eventually promoted over many better qualified white employees who had more seniority. Isiah’s wife believed that she became aware of a scheme, by employees and customers, to embezzle funds from her father’s Company. She believes that her husband, Isiah, may be one of the perpetrators. Before Sophie had the opportunity to communicate the scheme to the authorities, she was murdered by a hired black old friend of Isiah. That individual, without authorization, contracted out Sophie’s murder to a low life white criminal who bungled the murder dreadfully. That event caused the original black man hired to kill Sophie, to be murdered. This book takes the reader into the world of a racist reprisal by the Taylor family against their black son-in-law and the other persons involved in a multi-country scheme to embezzle funds from the billion dollar Company. The book sets forth the mystery of who committed both murders as well as who were involved in the complicated scheme of embezzlement. The greed of the Donovan’s family and the Daniels’ family and their friends, intensifies the mystery as to whom may have committed the murders and embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars.
