Malformations of the Nervous System Book Excerpt:

This volume deals with brain development malformations of the central nervous system, showcasing a unique approach that furthers research through systematic integration of exciting new developments from fields including molecular genetics, neuroimaging, and neuropathology. By integrating data and research from these disciplines, better conceptualization of the mechanisms of the developmental processes is achieved. Clinicians will find invaluable insights into complex issues, including midline hypoplasias, disorders of segmentation of the neural tube, and hamartomatous disorders of cellular lineage, amongst others. The clinical manifestations of central nervous system malformations are also discussed, along with new advancements in MRI techniques and analysis, including volumetric morphology, spectroscopy, and functional neuroimaging. Sections dedicated to management and treatment are also included in an effort to aid clinicians in their goal of providing better care for individuals affected by these types of malformations. * A single source that encompasses the various aspects of cerebral malformations * A unique approach that furthers research through systematic integration of exciting new developments from fields including molecular genetics, neuroimaging, and neuropathology * New diagnostic tools, management protocols, and treatments for patient care

Congenital Malformations of the Central Nervous System Book Excerpt:

"A desire to study congenital malformations of the CNS originated several years ago. It was found necessary first to acquire sufficient knowledge of anatomy of the normal adult human brain as well as of the morphogenesis of the developing human brain. The results of the work done in this field formed the subject for my M.Sc. thesis at the McGill University: Anatomical and Developmental Study of the Human Thalamus, 1951. This was subsequently published in the J. Comp. Neurology 1953 and 1954." --

Cavernous Malformations of the Nervous System Book Excerpt:

Questions regarding the nature and appropriate management of cavernous malformation (CM) have clouded researchers and those faced with making clinical decisions for several decades. CMs may be seen as an incidental finding on MRI studies, or they may present with symptoms, such as seizures or intracranial hemorrhage, often causing severe neurologic deficit. Cavernous Malformations of the Nervous System provides a comprehensive and authoritative review of the current practice in diagnosis and management of these cerebrovascular disorders. Emphasis has been laid on the understanding of basic sciences with chapters committed to understanding of CCM1, 2 and 3 genes and their role in CCM biology, as well as clinical genetics. Controversial topics which continue to pose treatment challenges such as safety of anticoagulation and prophylactic management during pregnancy are also discussed. This book will be of interest to basic science researchers, neurosurgeons and vascular neurologists both in academic institutions and private practice.

Pediatric Neurology Part I Book Excerpt:

Modern neuroembryology integrates descriptive morphogenesis with more recent insight into molecular genetic programing and data enabled by cell-specific tissue markers that further define histogenesis. Maturation of individual neurons involves the development of energy pumps to maintain membrane excitability, ion channels, and membrane receptors. Most malformations of the nervous system are best understood in the context of aberrations of normal developmental processes that result in abnormal structure and function. Early malformations usually are disorders of genetic expression along gradients of the three axes of the neural tube, defective segmentation, or mixed lineages of individual cells. Later disorders mainly involve cellular migrations, axonal pathfinding, synaptogenesis, and myelination. Advances in neuroimaging now enable the diagnosis of many malformations in utero, at birth, or in early infancy in the living patient by abnormal macroscopic form of the brain. These images are complimented by modern neuropathological methods that disclose microscopic, immunocytochemical, and subcellular details beyond the resolution of MRI. Correlations may be made of both normal and abnormal ontogenesis with clinical neurological and EEG maturation in the preterm or term neonate for a better understanding of perinatal neurological disease. Precision in terminology is a key to scientific communication.

Vascular Malformations of the Central Nervous System Book Excerpt:

Vascular malformations of the central nervous system are important pathologies that could present with abrupt onset hemorrhage resulting in devastating neurological deficits. Current knowledge of their biology and natural history is increasing. Diagnostic modalities help clinicians to better evaluate the individual cases, and to decide the best treatment options. Treatment alternatives are various and all treatment options should be evaluated before choosing the final therapeutic modality. The purpose of this book is to review the current knowledge about vascular malformations of the central nervous system and to evaluate the treatment alternatives.

Congenital Malformations of the Brain Book Excerpt:

Offering a new and uniquely multidisciplinary approach to malformations of the brain, this book begins with definitions that clarify the different types of malformations. Since malformations occur in a forming brain, neuroembryology and some of the genes guiding normal development are discussed. Causes of malformations--abnormal chromosomes, Mendelian genetics and external teratogens-- are reviewed. After this basic knowledge has been put in place, each user-friendly chapter synthesizes the neuropathology, specific embryology related to the pathology to the malformation, and what is known of possible causes and mechanisms by which the malformation occurs. Each chapter also describes the clinical, radiological, chromosomal and genetic aspects of the malformation. The central nervous system in twins and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is also considered. Generously illustrated, this volume contains instructive pictures of fetal malformations. The chapter on migration disorders contains many gross and microscopic photographs. Destructive lesions, perinatal hemorrhagic and hypoxic-ischemic lesions and early neonatal degenerations are considered in order to differentiate them from malformations. The book concludes with an appendix listing gene loci which have so far been identified for various malformations.

Progress in developmental neurobiology and advances in (neuro) genetics have been spectacular. The high resolution of modern imaging techniques applicable to developmental disorders of the human brain and spinal cord have created a novel insight into the developmental history of the central nervous system (CNS). This book provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the human CNS in the context of its many developmental disorders. It provides a unique combination of data from human embryology, animal research and developmental neuropathology, and there are more than 400 figures in over a hundred separate illustrations.
