Description : Among the regional landed elites in the Western World of the mid-1800s, the two most formidable were the owners of slave plantations in the Southern states of the U.S. and the proprietors of manorial estates in the provinces of Prussian East Elbia. Masters and Lords surveys the economic, social, and political histories of the two classes from the seventeenth and sixteenth centuries respectively, and pays particular attention to planters during the secession crisis of 1860-61 and to Junkers during the revolutionary crisis of 1848-49. In the process, Bowman grapples with such ambiguous and contentious concepts as capitalism, conservatism, and paternalism. Despite very different labor systems, antebellum planters and contemporaneous Junkers alike presided over landed estates that functioned as both autocratic political communities and agricultural enterprises exporting valuable commodities to industrializing England. This book also highlights important geographic, demographic, and political contrasts between the South and East Elbia as regional societies. Bowman concludes that the crucial distinction between the two landed elites is to be found in the Junkers' militarist and estatist monarchism versus the planters' libertarian but racist republicanism.

The "Lord" study series is an insightful, warm-hearted Bible study series designed to meet readers where they are--and help them discover God's answers to their deepest needs. Does It Sometimes Feel Impossible to Measure Up to God's Standards? On a hillside overlooking the Sea of Galilee, Jesus opened the doorway to the kingdom of God. He challenged His followers to pursue a faith without compromise. Without anxiety. Without judgmentalism. He encouraged them to build a faith that bears fruit. A faith built on rock. A faith that would be true to the only Lord and Master. Is that the kind of faith you want? It sounds impossible. It feels unreachable. How can you possibly measure up? Let Kay Arthur lovingly guide you through the life-changing Sermon on the Mount in her devotional study, Lord, I'm Torn Between Two Masters. It will minister to you in intimate ways. And these are truths you can share easily with others in small groups.

Description : Much that is commonly accepted about slavery and religion in the Old South is challenged in this significant book. The eight essays included here show that throughout the antebellum period, southern whites and blacks worshipped together, heard the same sermons, took communion and were baptized together, were subject to the same church discipline, and were buried in the same cemeteries. What was the black perception of white-controlled religious ceremonies? How did whites reconcile their faith with their racism? Why did freedmen, as soon as possible after the Civil War, withdraw from the biracial churches and establish black denominations? This book is essential reading for historians of religion, the South, and the Afro-American experience.

Description : Accepting Christ as ‘Lord and Master of My life’ is very important for all of us. It is especially significant for those who have the tendency to be autonomously obsessed with their self-image because, many times, they separate their life from Him, something which shows that, in essence, they do not acknowledge Christ as ‘Lord and Master of their life.’ It is true that man, having the tendency of ancestral sin, shamelessly dares to make himself God in his everyday life in order to have the ability to get to know everything and taste every fruit, uninterruptedly and with no moral reservations since, “without God everything is acceptable.” In this way, he rejects God from his life so he can live freely and enjoy the carnal pleasures and all the comforts of this world and to experience paradisiacal sensual pleasures which in fact are a false, fictitious and utopian world. This is because, it is simply impossible for heaven to exist without Christ, without placing Him as ‘Lord and Master of our life.’ - Makarios of Australia, Lord and Master of my life ..., pp. 33-34. His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia in his illuminating and spiritually edifying book prudently offers “Reflections on Spiritual Alertness.” Just as monks are summoned to prayer by the sound of the talanton, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios prayerfully calls upon the faithful to repentance through his explanation of this truly Orthodox prayer, “the Prayer of Great Lent.” - From the 'Foreword' by His Grace Bishop Silouan of Sinope, pp. 9-10.
