Description : Modern Dublin provides a new history of the capital of Ireland during the 1960s. Through a series of case studies, it examines how an aging eighteenth-century city was rapidly transformed by speculative office construction and suburban development, and explores how this impacted on the lives of the city's ordinary inhabitants. It tracks how the initial excitement which surrounded this process slowly turned to disillusionment asthe decade progressed: exploring the development of a popular movement to oppose these urban changes, composed of architects, students, housing protestors, and gentrifiers. The volume adds to the literature on European post-warurban development and throws new light on the popular reception of broader processes of social and economic modernization in 1960s Ireland.
