Motor Neurone Disease Book Excerpt:

Motor Neurone Disease is one of the most difficult conditions to manage medically and socially. A disease which leads to the loss of control of most muscle systems of the body, it has no known cause and no cure. For this reason, clinicians have traditionally been reluctant to reveal the diagnosis to sufferers or their families and the condition has become known as one of the best kept secrets of medical practice. However in recent years a number of organizations have set up to support sufferers and their families and consequently, the public profile of the condition has changed dramatically. Motor Neurone Disease provides an extremely helpful guide to the medical facts relating to the condition and considers the psycho-social effects on sufferers and those who care for them. It will be essential reading for doctors, nurses, social workers, physio-, speech and occupational therapists as well as all those suffering from Motor Neurone Disease, their families and carers.

Motor Neuron Disease Research Progress Book Excerpt:

The motor neuron diseases (or motor neuron diseases) (MND) are a group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons, the cells that control voluntary muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing. Neurological examination presents specific signs associated with upper and lower motor neuron degeneration. Signs of upper motor neuron damage include spasticity, brisk reflexes and the Babinski sign. Signs of lower motor neuron damage include weakness and muscle atrophy. Every muscle group in the body requires both upper and lower motor neurons to function. It is a common misconception that "upper" motor neurons control the arms, while "lower" motor neurons control the legs. The signs described above can occur in any muscle group, including the arms, legs, torso, and bulbar region. Symptoms usually present between the ages of 50-70, and include progressive weakness, muscle wasting, and muscle fasciculations; spasticity or stiffness in the arms and legs; and overactive tendon reflexes. Patients may present with symptoms as diverse as a dragging foot, unilateral muscle wasting in the hands, or slurred speech. This new book presents the latest research from around the globe.

Motor Neuron Disease Book Excerpt:

Half a century ago Lou Gehrig was given his diagnosis: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It remains a devastating terminal disease. However, considerable effort has been made in the last decade by some of the premier neurologists, physiatrists, and neuroscientists in the world to elucidate a greater understanding of pathogenic mechanisms, to characterize the disease clinically, and to find greater ways to ease suffering for these patients. In this issue of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of North America, we have brought together some of the world's leading authorities on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other motor neuron diseases to emphasize this ongoing research and to explain what the future holds in regard to our further understanding of these diseases.

Neurodegenerative Disorders as Systemic Diseases Book Excerpt:

This book sheds new light on neurodegenerative disorders as systemic diseases. Classically, neuronal cell death was a hallmark of such disorders. However, it has become evident that neural dysfunction is more important in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders. More recently, the prionoid-spreading hypothesis of disease-causing molecules has attracted a great deal of attention. Therapeutic strategies thus must be reconsidered in the light that neurodegenerative disorders are indeed systemic diseases. The first part of this book introduces the concept of neurodegeneration in biology and pathophysiology. The second part focuses on clinical evaluation and biomarkers from the perspective of this new concept, while the third summarizes the risk factors of neurodegeneration. The fourth part of this work indicates future directions of treatment, and the final part discusses health promotion for prevention and quality of life. This book will be of interest to both researchers and medical personnel, and provides a fresh approach to neurodegenerative diseases, paving the way to new research and improved quality of health care for patients.
