Description : The objectives of this review of multicultural and migrant education in Australia were to survey nationally current activities; assess whether programs can be improved and, if so, make recommendations for change; and identify areas requiring further research. The review covers the following topics: (1) patterns of Australian multiculturalism; (2) issues of education in a multicultural society, with discussion of teaching English as a second language, teaching of community languages, and studies of ethnic and cultural diversity; (3) community views on multicultural education; (4) discussion of relevant activities in government, Catholic, and non-Catholic independent schools; (5) the role of ethnic schools; (6) how tertiary institutions contribute to multicultural and migrant education through teaching community languages, preparing teachers of English as a Second language, and courses in cultural and ethnic diversity.; (7) issues of adult migrant education including home tutoring, courses in industry, and English teaching by television; and (8) what the government support structures are for multicultural education. Recommendations for action are made where clearly applicable and areas for further research are identified. Description : The National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE) published electronic issues of Volumes 1 and 2 of the NABE Journal of Research and Practice to offer archival records of 2002 and 2003 NABE conferences presentations. Beginning with Volume 3, the title of the publication is changed to NABE Review of Research and Practice and is published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. for NABE. Description : Violent incidents that took place in 2004 and 2005 in the Netherlands and the UK respectively prompted people to claim that multiculturalism had failed. This claim requires an assessment of the effect of the policies that were drafted based on this political philosophy. In this study, the author analyses two sets of policies developed from multiculturalism: policies of anti-discrimination of minorities and their labour market participation. The effect of these policies is assessed by studying the policy objectives and their results.Based on this review, the author concludes that while there is still much to achieve in the fields of anti-discrimination and labour market participation, multiculturalism did not fail in the UK. On the contrary, it created a positive public perception of diversity and a high participation of minorities in the labour market. This contrasts with results achieved in the Netherlands where policies have fluctuated in such a way that the public attitude towards diversity is ambivalent and the participation of minorities in the labour market is much lower than that of their native counterpart.

Description : The articles that recorded multicultural art lessons in the US P-12 classrooms in School Arts during the past decade revealed the condition of US multicultural art education from three aspects. First, the teachers' interest in multiculturalism has been stable in the past decade. Second, the lessons covered multiple cultures unequally. Among pluralistic US cultures, Native American culture was favored while Asian-American, Arab-American, and Muslim-American cultures were neglected. Among global cultures, Mexican and African cultures were represented most often. Only 12.4% of world countries were represented. Third, most multicultural art projects were stereotyped, though some innovative projects emerged. Many art teachers selected cultural content to teach based on classroom population and local culture. The art teachers tended to teach the meanings of US ethnic cultures better than global cultures. The alteration of cultural materials and techniques caused the loss or change of cultural meanings.
