Description : In the increasingly diverse classrooms of American communities the need for multicultural education has been well established as an intervention strategy for educational inequities. Much has been written on approaches to multicultural education in the science classroom, but little has been employed in this content area. This may be partly due to the conflicts in the scholarly community over the proper approach to multicultural science education. Two focus group interviews with culturally diverse students were held at a large comprehensive high school in the Puget Sound area north of Seattle, Washington. Interview questions focused around the students' cultural worldviews and their experience of science education. Focus group data was analyzed and used alongside information from the scholarly literature to develop a set of teaching methods to help all students in the multicultural classroom achieve high standards in science learning. Primary methods include: helping students to negotiate the cultural border crossings between their home life and the science classroom; helping students make connections between the abstract science learning of the classroom and their tanglible experiences outside of school; acommodating multiple learning styles in the classroom, with an emphasis on hands-on learning; and providing opportunities for both reinforcement and extension to keep the class engaging for all learners. Opportunities for further research using the successful methods of this study could include an even wider diversity of student voices. Implementation and monitoring of these teaching methods can serve to further improve and refine them in practice.

Workshops about varied subjects were carried out by participants representing four countries and participants developed teaching materials by getting benefit from elements special to their cultures in the ones related to science teaching. Two students from Belgium, one student from Denmark, one student from Latvia and five students from Turkey participated in the study and three Turkish academicians conducted the workshops. The outcomes of the study were evaluated by presenting them to all participants. Description : When applying to The College of William and Mary, students indicate what their intended major will be. However, Black students interested in majoring in the sciences at the start of College will more than likely not do so in the end. Since most students cannot declare a major until their sophomore year, the lack of retention of intended science majors has been almost impossible to trace. This study will examine what happens during those intro science classes that causes some Black students to change their major, while allowing room for those who simply decide that science is not for them. It will also examine the critical factors that allow other Black students to persist in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors at The College of William and Mary. These factors will be compared and contrasted with those at other Liberal Arts institutions that have a legacy of producing Black STEM majors. A clear explanation of the historical basis for educational inequities that impact Black people is also included in this study as it is necessary to implement sustainable programs that will increase the retention and the graduation rate of Black STEM majors at The College of William and Mary. Restorative justice will be used as a model for authentic change in my final recommendations.
