Description : Several years ago, a veteran Maine warden, John Everett, was listed as missing. Ultimately, after an extensive investigation, his body was never found, and he was presumed dead. His daughter, a newly commissioned Maine game warden, was assigned to a northern Maine region covering the area from Jackman to the Forks. It would be the same area her father patrolled until his disappearance. Estranged from him for many years, she has vowed to follow in his footsteps while pursuing the circumstances of his disappearance. Her job would be difficult because most of the people from these small rural communities had lived there all their lives, were suspicious of strangers, and had a distrust for local and state authorities. With the help of some key camp owners, she slowly was able to gather pertinent information, leading to the reason why her father disappeared.

Description : M. J. Eberhart, aka the Nimblewill Nomad, was a 60-year-old retired doctor in January 1998 when he set off on a foot journey that carried him 4,400 miles (twice the length of the Appalachian Trail) from the Florida Keys to the far north of Quebec. Written in a vivid journal style, the author unabashedly recounts the good (friendships with other hikers he met), the bad (sore legs, cutting winds and rain), and the godawful (those dispiriting doubts) aspects of his days of walking along what has since become known as the Eastern Continental Trail (ECT). An amazing tale of self-discovery and insight into the magic that reverberates from intense physical exertion and a high goal, Eberhart's is the only written account of a thru-hike along the ECT. Covering 16 states and 2 Canadian provinces, Ten Million Steps deftly mixes practical considerations of an almost unimaginable undertaking with the author's trademark humor and philosophical musings.

Description : NATIONAL BESTSELLER Now a major motion picture starring Paul Rudd “A delightful book that recounts one of the strangest episodes in the history of espionage. . . . . Relentlessly entertaining.”—The New York Times Book Review Moe Berg is the only major-league baseball player whose baseball card is on display at the headquarters of the CIA. For Berg was much more than a third-string catcher who played on several major league teams between 1923 and 1939. Educated at Princeton and the Sorbonne, he as reputed to speak a dozen languages (although it was also said he couldn't hit in any of them) and went on to become an OSS spy in Europe during World War II. As Nicholas Dawidoff follows Berg from his claustrophobic childhood through his glamorous (though equivocal) careers in sports and espionage and into the long, nomadic years during which he lived on the hospitality of such scattered acquaintances as Joe DiMaggio and Albert Einstein, he succeeds not only in establishing where Berg went, but who he was beneath his layers of carefully constructed cover. As engrossing as a novel by John le Carré, The Catcher Was a Spy is a triumphant work of historical and psychological detection.

Description : "Hammer is a small, town detective. He may be four feet tall, but pound per pound, he's as tough as they come. Sucker for a pretty face, too. Which is why he's in the dumps. Moira Pepperleigh, all legs and smarts, said no; her 'no' bounced off his head like he was Jose Canseco in right field. While Hammer drowns his sorrows in horse-piss draft at the Ho, a case falls his way. There's been a kidnapping. Family of three, name of Ormsby, Mommy, Daddy, daughter Thormeen. First on the list of suspects is one of the legion of Banff Springs spectres, a ghost named Mary. Mary's on a mission and woe betide anyone who gets in her way. Step up to the plate, Ormsbys. Fortunately for her, the kidnappers arrived before Thormeen's crackhead parents could put their plans for her deflowering into action.Unfortunately for Thormeen, she's been taken by Grey Falcon, notorious guns for hire. They're on the payroll of the Dough brothers, American telecom billionaires. Maybe in this crazy, mixed-up world of ours you could understand why someone would kidnap a fourteen-year-old girl, but her loser parents? Thereby hangs the riddle, but not yet the mystery in which it comes wrapped. The Doughs, sad to say, are not as wealthy as they once were, having lost the bulk of their inheritance in the Maple Syrup Bubble. There are two things on the mind of your average billionaire. One is influencing politicians. The other is owning a big yacht. Not just any big yacht, but a really big yacht, a really big yacht with something no other yacht has. Like a white shark aquarium. They don't come cheap as you may or may not know, and, what with the maple syrup fiasco, the Doughs can't have both.Unless they come up with a new cell-phone plan. The public, however, has grown leery of new cell-phone plans. The Doughs' mad scientists come up with a plan. If you can't bring Mohammad to the mountain... Is there not two percent of Neanderthal genes buried within human DNA? Activate those, reverse evolution, and, presto! You'll have a world of Neanderthals lining up to spend their hard-earned dollars.Which explains the kidnappings. The experimental drug doesn't work out so well. It turns Ma and Pa Ormsby to jellyfish. It has a reverse effect on Thormeen. She becomes an eighty-pound wonder girl known as Moxie Firefly. Insane Grey Falcon leader, Michael Duke, wants to wed Moxie. He and she will be Adam and Eve for a breed of Übermensch.Hammer has a fair amount on his plate, even for him. But, with the help of his crew - heavyweight Axe, newcomer Trevone, Stiffy and Bitsy the Thompson twins, Timmy the town drunk, senior citizen crime fighters known as the Dependables, and Hugh Grant loving mastiff named Belle, it all works out. Mary sees the light. Michael Duke meets his maker. Moxie gets to live like a regular girl. Did I mention the ferrets?"--

Description : Curvaceous Rose Hawkins has been told to never pick up strangers, but when she comes across a handsome man in the middle of the night with a broken-down motorcycle, she can’t seem to turn away from him. She can’t seem to keep her hands off of him, and her hitchhiker has some unusual appetites of his own… This short story is 4,184 words long, and contains sexual scenes between a curvy woman and a vampire, including blood drinking. -Excerpt- "Do you need anything else? Anything at all? " I tried to not sound too hopeful about that. To be honest, I thought he would shoo me out by then, as I was probably being a nuisance. Luke had to be tired, a long day on the road, and even longer night of fighting with broken machinery. It was a miracle he hadn't shoved me out the door and slammed it in my face. His response was slow, almost thoughtful. " Anything, huh?" There was a hollow note of his previous playfulness as he turned his head towards me, his eyes searching me with a harsh, predatory sort of clarity. His gaze met mine. There was a hollow hunger to that gaze, and I could sense some sort of struggle within himself. He didn’t seem to blink. Finally he took a step towards me, then another. Suddenly I felt like my heart would just stop. He had moved towards me with a feline grace, and I was completely transfixed by his gaze, like a snake hypnotized by the stare of a snake. I couldn't move, even as his cool fingers suddenly trailed over the soft curve of my chin, tilting my head upwards slightly. I could feel my pulse begin to pound with a strange mixture of apprehension and anticipation. "I promise I won't hurt you, Rose." I heard him murmur, and his other arm snaked around the curve of my back, pulling my curvaceous figure against him, my breasts crushed against his chest. I found myself holding my breath as he gently turned my head to the side, so that he could bury his nose against the side of my neck. I felt lips graze my racing pulse, some strong pounding against his soft mouth. “You’ve been very kind.” I could feel the movement of his lips as he spoke, and a delicious shudder wriggled through me. I couldn’t seem to muster up the will to move away from him. I could almost feel my eyes glaze over.

Description : The extraordinary, touching true story of Smoky, the smallest--and arguably bravest--dog of World War II In February 1944, as Japanese military advances threatened to overwhelm New Guinea, a tiny, four-pound Yorkshire Terrier was discovered hiding in the island's thick jungles. A total mystery as to her origins, she was adopted by US Army Air Force Corporal William "Bill" Wynne, an air-crewman in a photo reconnaissance squadron, becoming an irreplaceable lucky charm for the unit. When Smoky saved Wynne's life by barking a warning of an incoming kamikaze attack, he nicknamed her the "angel from a foxhole." Smoky's exploits continued when she jumped for the unit in a specially designed parachute and famously joined the aircrews flying daring sorties in the war-torn skies. But her most heroic feat was running a cable through a seventy-foot pipe no wider than four inches in places to enable critical communication lines to be run across an airbase which had just been seized from the enemy, saving hundreds of ground-crew from being exposed to enemy bombing. In recognition of her efforts, Smoky was awarded eight battle stars. Smoky the Brave brings to vivid life the danger and excitement of the many missions of World War II's smallest hero.
