Description : The National Association for Multicultural Education in Washington, D.C., listed a number of issues that the school curriculum should address with reference to multicultural education, including racism, sexism, classism, linguicism, ablism, ageism, heterosexism, and religious intolerance. It is noteworthy that of all these issues, religion is about the only one that throughout history people are willing to die for, although whether what is at issue is really religion or other things such as territory is another matter. It is also interesting that all the others have isms in their names but religious issues are characterized by intolerance. Perhaps we should try to understand this intolerance and look at what steps might help to alleviate it. However, while intolerance might seem a simple thing, understanding what is behind it and how it plays such a crucial role in religion requires what we refer to in the Introduction chapter as a multifaceted approach at multiple levels. It is not enough just to try to dispel stereotypes of followers of other religions, or to point out commonalities in world religions. We should, for example, try to understand and appreciate how adherents of other religions try to answer questions regarding their adaptation to the contemporary environment. It is through understanding how different religions coexist side by side at various levels that we truly come to learn about religion in multicultural education.

Description : This narrative ethnography adopts an aesthetic lens to relay the various lived experiences of a non-traditional, Midwestern public high school during its final year in its original building. Extending upon previous research of high school dropouts, I examine how this one particular high school incorporated a self-paced curriculum with a focus on “family” to address the unique learning needs of students at risk of not graduating. By employing elements of grounded theory, narrative inquiry, and autoethnography, I share the stories of Walgut High School’s (a pseudonym) roughly sixty students as they struggle to navigate their respective roles in a dominant cultural narrative to which they’ve never felt like they belonged. Through the extensive and organic voices of the primary participants—as well as my observations of my own participation in the school culture over the course of a year—this project serves to offer insights not only into the school experiences of marginalized adolescents, but also into Walgut’s myriad successes and failures. In particular, this piece highlights the vitality of unconditionally caring or “hospitable” teachers (Derrida, 2000), while ultimately questioning the presumed utility of a high school diploma. The story concludes not by lauding the alternative mine created for Walgut’s canaries, but by questioning the purpose and stability of all scholastic minds. As American schools continue making strides to accommodate and support the complex and oftentimes contradictory needs of their students, what it means to succeed as a teacher in (and prepare teachers for) these diversified, inclusive learning spaces is growing increasingly complicated. Indeed, given the shifting paradigm of American public education, teacher preparation programs must continue to adapt their practices and philosophies in order to equip their teacher candidates with the skills needed not only to thrive but also find purpose and meaning in schools similar to this project’s Walgut. While this book doesn’t claim to offer any answers to the myriad questions concerning the future of public schools, it does endeavor to offer a springboard from which all education stakeholders can continue engaging in healthy and productive discussions of how best to prepare students (and teachers) for autonomous, democratic, curious, creative, and compassionate citizenship both in and apart from their academic communities. To this end, rather than write from a detached, traditionally academic vantage, I have sought in these pages to compose from a personal (albeit limited), passionate (albeit subjective) and participatory (albeit someone marginalized) perspective. In my pursuit of social justice for the characters of Walgut High School, I begin first by exposing my own privileged role in perpetuating injustice. Only through recognizing and naming our own demons can we ever begin to exorcize the System writ large. Thus, in this book’s lack, there is possibility; in its futility, hope.

Description : Using King and Kitchener's model of reflective judgment as a framework, I inquired and examined critical reflective thinking skills of myself and my pre-service and in-service teachers in the process of developing a multicultural autobiographical curriculum in 4 years. I explored, in a narrative inquiry mode, my historical cross-cultural self and how I connected this self to my immediate teaching environment in preparation for the curriculum. In the first two years, I integrated my prior intersubjective self study method into the multicultural teacher education courses, and developed a narrative inquiry based curriculum to help students better understand their own cultural identities. The complexity of culture and self was emphasized in identifying their relations with six cultural groups: race/ethnicity, social class, religion, gender/sexuality, language, and exceptionality/learning ability. In order to guide the students to make meaning of their multicultural identities in a teaching situation, they reconstructed teacher stories about their most influential teachers. To further connect their identities with theories in multicultural education, they developed personal philosophies of multicultural education. From the reconstructed narrative statement of my experience in preparing and implementing the curriculum, I found myself using critical reflective thinking skills. Based on my evaluation of 400 students' journal writings and pre- and post-multicultural autobiographies, I found their critical reflective thinking skills increased. In the last two years, I further integrated the tradition of thick description to help students break through their preconceived assumptions about themselves. Service-learning and a service-learning recipient's multicultural biography were included to bring cultural contrasting relationships into students' autobiographical experience. Banks' typologies of cultural identity development and cross-cultural competence in multicultural e were introduced to help students better situate themselves developmentally. Such hybrid curriculum further increased students' critical reflective thinking skills. Examining pre- and post multicultural autobiographies from 600 students in the 4 years of curriculum development, I found the levels of students' critical reflective thinking skills about themselves increased significantly, although the average level does not measure up to that in King and Kitchener's research. Appended are: (1) Summary of King and Kitchener's Model of Seven Stage Reflective Judgment; (2) Summary of Banks' 6-Stage-Typology of Cultural Identity; and (3) Summary of Banks' 4-Type-Typology of Cross-Cultural Teachers.
