HIV and Psychiatry Book Excerpt:

Mental health and HIV/AIDS are closely interlinked. Mentaldisorders, including substance-use disorders, are associated withincreased risk of HIV infection and affect adherence to andefficacy of antiretroviral treatments. Conversely, HIVinfection can increase risk for neuropsychiatric complicationsincluding stress, mood, and neurocognitive disorders. This book provides clinicians with a comprehensive evidenced-basedand practical approach to the management of patients with HIVinfection and co-morbid mental disorders. It provides up-to-dateand clear overviews of current clinical issues, as well as therelevant basic science. Information and data from studies ofdifferent HIV groups (eg men who have sex with men) make the textrelevant to a broad spectrum of clinicians, including those workingwith low socioeconomic status groups in high income countries andthose working in the developing world. The book uses the popular format of the World PsychiatricAssociation’s Evidence and Experience series. Reviewchapters summarize the evidence on the epidemiology, pathogenesisand clinical aspects of mental disorders in HIV,and interventions(both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology including drug-druginteractions). These are complemented by commentariesaddressing particular facets of each topic and providing insightgained from clinical experience. Psychiatrists, psychologists and all mental health staff workingwith HIV-infected patients will find this book of greatbenefit.

Neuropsychiatric Complications of HIV Book Excerpt:

Thanks to advances in Anti-Retrovial Drugs (ARTs), HIV is treatable and those who have the disease are often able to lead a normal life. However, as a chronic (and incurable) infectious disease, HIV positive patients are susceptible to neuropsychiatric complications. These complications reduce the quality of life for the individual and exponentially increases the cost of medical care and medications to treat both conditions. Neuropsychiatric Complications of HIV examines these neuropsychiatric complications prevalent in those who are HIV positive, providing clinical correlation, translational significance, and details guides to neurocognitive assessment, brain imaging, and related neuropharmacology. Written for clinicians, researchers, and students working with HIV and AIDS, the book begins with the biology of HIV, a complete look at available ARTs and antibodies, as well as diagnostics tools for HIV. It continues on to the epidemiology of NeuroAIDs and the manifestations of it-cognitive deficits, dementia, depression, agitation, psychosis, and cognitive slowing. Includes at-a-glance flow charts for clinical strategy Presents Review Questions to enhance the understanding of content Calls out Translational Significance in each chapter Examines ethical issues and possible solutions Provides extensive list of online resources for related subject material

Comprehensive Textbook of AIDS Psychiatry Book Excerpt:

Among the vast and rapidly growing field of AIDS research, there is an ample body of evidence supporting the fact that psychiatric treatment can decrease transmission, diminish suffering, improve adherence, and decrease morbidity and mortality. There is probably no other illness in which the connections between mind and body are so inextricably woven. But until now there has been no comprehensive textbook of AIDS psychiatry to guide clinicians towards providing much needed care. Using a biopsychosocial approach, this 41-chapter volume offers insight into the interface between the psychiatric, medical, and social dimensions of HIV and AIDS. Drawing on clinical experience as well as evidence-based medicine, this textbook provides a basic understanding of the comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions that cause distress, morbidity, and mortality in persons with HIV and AIDS, while at the same time examining the epidemic from the viewpoints of public health and public policy experts.

Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience Book Excerpt:

This is the long-awaited successor to Jeffrey Cummings' classic work, Clinical Neuropsychiatry, published in 1985. That book represented an integration of behavioral neurology and biological psychiatry into a single volume devoted to explicating brain-behavior relationships. It was clinically oriented and intended for practitioners caring for patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. The new title reflects the authors' effort to link the recent explosion of new information from neurochemistry, neuroanatomy, genetics, neuropharmacology, neuropathology, and neuroimaging to the clinical descriptions. Yet the clinical emphasis of its predecessor has been maintained. Each chapter has a consistent approach and the book as whole provides a practical, easy-to-use synthesis of clinical advice and basic science. The volume is enhanced by 4-color images throughout. It is intended for students, residents, fellows, and practitioners of neurology, psychiatry, neuropsychology, and cognitive neuroscience. It will also be of interest to individuals in neuroimaging.

Can a Virus Cause Schizophrenia Book Excerpt:

The quest to discover the etiology of schizophrenia has fascinated and frustrated researchers for more than a century. In recent years, there has been an accumulation of experimental and epidemiological evidence supporting the role of viral infections in schizophrenia pathogenesis. This growing body of evidence has amassed to the point where the mainstream scientific community can no longer ignore it. Drawing on his research experience in biological psychiatry and neurovirology, Dr. Pearce provides the first book dedicated entirely to a critical appraisal of the viral hypothesis of schizophrenia. This book is an enlightening and valuable resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, neurobiologists, and their students. By integrating the latest findings in virology and immunology with current concepts in the pathophysiology of the non-affective psychotic disorders, this well illustrated volume disentangles the various sub-theories of the viral hypothesis, and lays the groundwork for more focused explorations of the mechanisms by which viruses may cause serious mental illness.

Behavioral Aspects of AIDS Book Excerpt:

As we enter the last decade of the twentieth century, the AIDS epidemic looms ever larger and threatening. The specter of upwards of a million deaths in the United States and perhaps many millions worldwide from a sexually transmitted virus shakes our belief in modem medical science, while challenging the foundations of democratic society. Almost ten years into the epidemic, and with an enormous body of basic science research on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), we still do not know why AIDS emerged when it did or how to stop its spread. A very humbling experience for scientists, clinicians, public health experts, politicians, and the general public. Yet there are signs that a well coordinated multidisciplinary research program can conquer the epidemic and, perhaps, provide the basis for preventing future epidemics. The HIV family of viruses is now better understood, both in terms of structure and function, than any other virus. Genetically engineered peptides and nucleic acids are being tested as specific treatments or vaccines against HIV infection/disease. Most prom ising are the strides which have been made in understanding those aspects of human behavior which have contributed to the spread of HIV infection and which must be substantially modified if AIDS is to be controlled and eventually eradicated. The basis of that understanding has roots in a diverse set of disciplines which have converged in the work presented in this book.
