Description : The use and application of qualitative and quantitative research within a library service setting has traditionally been seen as an onerous task with little relevance for the evaluation and examination of day-to-day activities of the library. This book will provide an overview of the history of qualitative research within the modern library. Its present-day role will be examined and suggestions provided for areas that might be suited to this type of research for the purposes of evaluation. The author will discuss how the results from such research might be applied, and the overall impact of using this type of research to inform development of a more user-centred organisation. Those libraries that have ventured bravely down the research path have leaned more heavily towards the use of standardized surveys and other similar instruments to gather feedback about performance, meet user needs, and reveal areas for improvement. This type of internal research shows that if it is done in a focused manner there may be keys in terms of bolstering budgetary support, implementing/improving programs and services, and supporting user needs. This book will provide examples of some qualitative studies, and also discuss different methodologies and their application in a simple, straightforward manner.

Description : During World War I, New Haven was a hive of wartime activity. The city hummed with munition production from the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, while food conservation campaigns, canning kitchens and book drives contributed to the war effort. Meanwhile, Walter Camp, father of American football, whipped recruits and city residents into shape with his fitness programs. The Knights of Columbus were also busy preparing their "Everyone Welcome! Everything Free!" huts. And one hero--a brown-and-white dog, Sergeant Stubby--first made his appearance at Camp Yale, home of the 102nd Regiment of the Yankee Division. Using library and museum collections, author Laura A. Macaluso demonstrates how the Elm City contributed its time and money, men and women and one special dog to the first global war of the twentieth century.

Description : This book takes a fresh and critical look at the leading sources of global risk — terrorism, disease, crime, poverty, environmental damage and others — and sets out a practical way to respond far better than we have to each risk area. Drawing from his state-of-the-art knowledge of global strategy as applied in the business world, the author provides analysis, insight, realistic strategies, and hope for a better way forward. His foresight has already been demonstrated. Early in the year 2000, he wrote: “Sadly, the history of mass terrorism is just about to be written. … Even the US is no longer a safe haven from foreign or local terrorists. … US policing has done little to limit the operations of terrorist Osama bin Laden. … The vulnerability of large government and civilian buildings and even military targets has also contributed to an increase in the scale of potential harm.” Without a more informed set of strategies and better global leadership, the catastrophe of 9/11 will only be a forerunner of many more disasters in the future. We can do much better. This important book shows us how. Description : Apart from the history of the old Town Hall and City Hall, this book provides an analysis of Council’s policies and the delivery of services and infrastructure that shaped Brisbane between 1985 and 2013. It provides a permanent record of Council accomplishments during a period of enormous change. Established three months before Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859 one of the first issues that faced the new Brisbane Municipal Council was the need for a Town Hall. This publication brings to life the shortcomings of the old Town Hall and the forty-year battle to erect a more suitable facility, which became City Hall. The odyssey continued in the decade long financial struggle to construct Brisbane’s City Hall following the end of World War I. The Council’s aspirational vision for Brisbane, together with strategies and objectives, that make the city a great place to conduct business, work and live are embraced in the concept Brisbane – Australia’s New World City. Today, not only does Council provide the basic services but also must compete against other major cities, both in Australia and internationally, if Brisbane is to progress and not stagnate. With blue skies, a subtropical climate and outdoor lifestyle, Brisbane is positioned on the world stage as vibrant, innovative, clean and green, a great place to live.

Description : Approximately 150,000 African-American soldiers, officers and men went to France to serve in WWI. Alongside them were thousands of African-American women who served in the various volunteer relief organizations like the Red Cross and the Y.M.C.A. Addie Hunton and Kathryn Johnson were two of the women who served. With keen observation and intelligence, they tell the story of what it was like to be overseas "fighting for democracy" with only a glimmer of hope of achieving it back home after the war. They relate the soldiers' stories as well as their own excitement at their new experiences in Europe. Their experience of interacting with the French sharply contrasted with the segregation and humiliation exported from America to France with the Yankee troops. Yet they did not carry bitterness home with them. They remained proud and glad that they had the privilege to serve. For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
