Flammability in Zero gravity Environment Book Excerpt:

Paraffin and other combustibles were burned in a zero-gravity environment. Zero-gravity intervals of 12 seconds, maximum duration, were obtained in the cabin of an aircraft flying Keplerian parabolas. Experiments were photographed with infrared sensitive film at 100 frames per second and 16-mm color film (ER-B) at 200 frames per second. Test results indicate that ignition is essentially unchanged compared to a one-gravity environment but that combustion is suppressed, in some instances, to the extent that the fire appeared to be extinguished. In all cases, the flame was brightest during periods of acceleration, such as at impact of the test chamber with the aircraft and when returning to level flight. Flame conditions at zero gravity were typical of those expected of a pure diffusion flame in which steady-state conditions were not achieved.

A General Meeting of the lAG was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, to commemorate its 125th Anniversary. The Edinburgh meeting, which attracted 360 scientific delegates and 80 accompanying persons from 44 countries, was hosted jointly by the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh. The scientific part of the program, which was held in the Appleton Tower of the University, included the following five symposia: Symposium 101 Global and Regional Geodynamics Symposium 102 GPS and Other Radio Tracking Systems Symposium 103 Gravity, Gradiometry and Gravimetry Symposium 104 Sea Surface Topography, the Geoid and Vertical Datums Symposium 105 Earth Rotation and Coordinate Reference Frames All together there were 90 oral and 160 poster presentatio'ls. The program was arranged to prevent any overlapping of oral presentations, and thus enabled delegates to participate in all the sessions. The 125th Anniversary Ceremony took place on August 7, 1989, in the noble surroundings of the McEwan Hall where, 53 years earlier, Vening-Meinesz gave one of the two Union Lectures at the 6th General Assembly of the IUGG. The Ceremony commenced with welcome speeches by the British hosts. An interlude of traditional Scottish singing and dancing was followed by the Presidential Address given by Professor Ivan Mueller, on 125 years of international cooperation in geodesy. The Ceremony continued with greetings from representatives of sister societies, and was concluded by the presentation of the Levallois Medal to Professor Arne Bjerhammar.

Fundamentals of Low Gravity Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer Book Excerpt:

This book presents the fundamentals of low gravity fluid dynamics and heat transfer. It investigates fluid behavior in low gravity environments such as those found in earth orbiting and space vehicles. The two major fluid phenomena affected by gravity (buoyancy and surface tension) are treated thoroughly from both the theoretical and applications points of view, and limitations of fluid and thermal responses to gravitational fields in space-based settings are clearly delineated. Summaries of all data available from low gravity flight and terrestrial experiments performed to date are also presented.

Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 18 contains literature published in 1976 and received before March 1, 1977; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included.

Epistemology of Experimental Gravity Scientific Rationality Book Excerpt:

The evolution of gravitational tests from an epistemological perspective framed in the concept of rational reconstruction of Imre Lakatos, based on his methodology of research programmes. Unlike other works on the same subject, the evaluated period is very extensive, starting with Newton's natural philosophy and up to the quantum gravity theories of today. In order to explain in a more rational way the complex evolution of the gravity concept of the last century, I propose a natural extension of the methodology of the research programmes of Lakatos that I then use during the paper. I believe that this approach offers a new perspective on how evolved over time the concept of gravity and the methods of testing each theory of gravity, through observations and experiments. I argue, based on the methodology of the research programmes and the studies of scientists and philosophers, that the current theories of quantum gravity are degenerative, due to the lack of experimental evidence over a long period of time and of self-immunization against the possibility of falsification. Moreover, a methodological current is being developed that assigns a secondary, unimportant role to verification through observations and/or experiments. For this reason, it will not be possible to have a complete theory of quantum gravity in its current form, which to include to the limit the general relativity, since physical theories have always been adjusted, during their evolution, based on observational or experimental tests, and verified by the predictions made. Also, contrary to a widespread opinion and current active programs regarding the unification of all the fundamental forces of physics in a single final theory, based on string theory, I argue that this unification is generally unlikely, and it is not possible anyway for a unification to be developed based on current theories of quantum gravity, including string theory. In addition, I support the views of some scientists and philosophers that currently too much resources are being consumed on the idea of developing quantum gravity theories, and in particular string theory, to include general relativity and to unify gravity with other forces, as long as science does not impose such research programs. Nucleate and Film Boiling in Reduced Gravity from Horizontal and Vertical Wires Book Excerpt:

Nucleate boiling was studied experimentally from electrically heated horizontal and vertical wires (0.0197-in. diam.) in water, ethyl alcohol, and 60-percent-by-weight aqueous sucrose solution in gravity fields of 0.014 and 1.0 times Earth gravity. The fluids were at their saturation temperatures at atmospheric pressure. The gravity reduction to 0.014 times Earth gravity caused a shift of only a few degrees in the curve of heat flux as a function of the difference between surface and saturation temperatures. Film boiling of ethyl alcohol was observed at Earth gravity and at several reduced gravity fields down to 0.014 times Earth gravity. For both the horizontal and vertical orientations, the gravity field and the circumferential surface tension at the interface of the vapor film surrounding the thin wire proved to be very important for the determination of the vapor removal pattern. As gravity was reduced, the vapor film behavior for the vertical orientation approached that for the horizontal position. A motion picture film is available that illustrates the boiling behavior in reduced gravity.
