Description : For this book, which follows an earlier volume of previously published essays, Hewitt and Bergeron have enlisted ten gifted historians---among them James M. Prichard, Terrence J. Winschel, Craig Symonds, and Stephen Davis---to produce original essays, based on the latest scholarship, that examine the careers and missteps of several of the Western Theater's key Rebel commanders. Among the important topics covered are George B. Crittenden's declining fortunes in the Confederate ranks, Earl Van Dom's limited prewar military experience and its effect on his performance in the Baton Rouge Campaign of 1862, Joseph Johnston's role in the fall of Vicksburg, and how James Longstreet and Braxton Bragg's failure to secure Chattanooga paved the way for the Federals'push into Georgia. --

Description : The Pakistan Army is a uniquely powerful and influential institution, with vast landholdings and resources. It has deep roots in the colonial armed forces and relies heavily on certain regions to supply its soldiers, especially parts of rural Punjab, where men have served in the army for generations. These men, their wives and mothers, and the military culture surrounding them are the focus of Maria Rashid's Dying to Serve, which innovatively and sensitively addresses the question: how does the military thrive when so much of its work results in injury, debility, and death? Taking ritual commemorations of fallen soldiers as one critical site of study, Rashid argues that these "spectacles of mourning" are careful manipulations of affect, gendered and structured by the military to reinforce its omnipotence in the lives of its subjects. Grounding her study in the famed martial district of Chakwal, Rashid finds affect similarly deployed in recruitment and training practices, as well as management of death and compensation to families. She contends that understanding these affective technologies is crucial to challenging the appeal of the military institution globally.

Description : This book is a very timely account of the legal, economic and political consequences for border states caught in the current tug-of-war between the West and Russia. The Ukraine crisis of 2014 focused policy-makers’ attention on a geographical area full of dangers that had gone relatively unnoticed since the breakup of the Soviet Union, namely the security dynamics of the border states of Eastern Europe and the Black Sea. Twenty-five years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a strong Russia returns alternatively threatening and cajoling, but at risk itself of suffering economic injury from western reprisals over its nostalgia for the map drawn at Yalta. That conflict, which hotted up over the Ukraine, was soon being played out over - and in the air space over - Syria and Turkey, while the border states themselves are likely to be drawn into the European refugee crisis and have the potential, after the 2015 Paris atrocities, to be breeding grounds for international terrorists. This groundbreaking book contains prescient warnings that must be heeded by leaders and diplomats on both sides of the East-West divide.

Description : You will discover the seven God-given prime directives to keenly observe while going through any conflict. These directives will help you keep focus as the battle rages on. Learn what every Christian's battle cry should always be no matter what the situation. Repeating this anthem will inspire us to look squarely at our savior for assistance and deliverance and nobody else. Knowing the right questions to ask the Lord in prayers during any spiritual battle is key. The author reveals these crucial questions to help you advance to the next level of battle that awaits you. Discover how to execute the proper spiritual weapon to bring about a better outcome. Employ the most effective breakthrough armaments such as fasting, prayers, speaking in tongues, the Lord's joy for strength, merry-heartedness as medicine, as well as using God's Word as powerful affirmations, and journaling to chronicle and reflect on how the Lord delivered victories to us for his glory. Battalion assessments will expose how to strike a balance during heated warfare, recognize when to stand still and when to move, keeping silent as opposed to speaking, and always being ready to extend a branch of peace while poised to fight can help the Lord accelerate a battle's ending. Ensure true spiritual success as you discover the dire reasons to enlist in God's great army. The most crucial reason is that God's army uses the process of enlistment for success, while the enemy craftily drafts his unwitting subjects for a useless, losing outcome. Choosing a particular side helps us to actively participate in aligned mindsets and goals to win what we believe in. This also shows that we have, without a doubt, chosen a designated leader. We'll fight very foolishly and be void of a distinguishable target if we don't first know who we've allied ourselves with. Joshua 24:15 KJV says, "Choose ye this day who you will serve . . ." Joshua declared in his farewell address. Choose a side now.

Description : The beginning of the Cold War began within days of the end of the Second World War, yet conscription still continued to replace the demobilisation of the existing armed forces still serving in war-torn Europe, the middle and Far East territories of the British Empire. Who better to replace them than over two million eligible eighteen year old young men who were thoroughly enjoying their freedom until a brown envelope fluttered through the letterbox informing: YOU'RE CONSCRIPTED LADDIE. This is a factual and personal story about the camaraderie that quickly developed among many during their enforced National Service. They did not want to do it, but I am sure that they, like me, had some great times apart from the shit that was dished out! I sincerely trust that the chapters within my story do relate to similar incidents, albeit under different circumstances, that occurred to thousands of others. For all of us it was a period of you had to do it. No ifs or buts and for many that did enjoy that way of life, and did re-enlist, good luck to them. Nevertheless, I can honestly say that I now look back with pride that I became one of the millions of young conscripts who did survive to tell the tale.
