Description : Abstract: An overview of progress in coordinating Federal nutrition research efforts and identifying areas in need of improvement are provided. Much progress has been made within and among Federal human nutrition research departments and agencies since Congress called for improved coordination in the Food and Agriculture Act of 1977. It is recommended that such coordination efforts continue and that agencies and departments plan their research efforts in conjunction with other Federal supporters of nutrition research to avoid duplication or inadequate coverage. The director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy should direct the Joint Subcommittee on Human Nutrition Research to develop a Federal nutrition research plan with input from agencies and departments which engage in human nutrition research. Description : Excerpt from 14th Annual Report; National Institutes of Health, Program in Biomedical and Behavioral Nutrition Research and Training: Fiscal Year 1990 Nutrition research represents a cross-cutting scientific endeavor that seeks to assess the consequences of food or nutrient intake in the intact organism and the metabolic and behavioral mechanisms involved. As such, it encompasses studies at the cellular and subcellular levels; elucidation of the metabolic function of nutrients in both animals and humans; examination of genetic-nutrient environmental interactions; and studies of the role of diet in the maintenance of health and the prevention of disease in humans, including clinical trials, epidemiological studies, metabolic studies, surveillance, and nutritional status monitoring studies. All of these are activities of the nih Program in Biomedical and Behavioral Nutrition Research and Training. Over the past 14 years, this report, published annually since 1977, has emphasized the coordination of nutrition research at nih, the activities of the nih Nutrition Coordinating Committee MCC), the highlights of the nutrition research program and associated program development, and the fiscal year obligations in nutrition research and training. These topics also are featured in this year's report detailing highlights of nutrition research at nih and the activities of the ncc. Description : Excerpt from Annual Report of the National Institutes of Health: Program in Biomedical and Behavioral Nutrition Research and Training, Fiscal Year 1981 Part I of the report presents the FY 1981 Program in Biomedical and Behavioral Nutrition Research and Training in two sections. The first section begins with the definition of nutrition research at the nih, and then focuses on the FY 1981 obligations for nutrition research and training. The analysis of the fiscal aspects of the program include an overview of the nutrition program and a comparison of actual obligations for nutrition with nih obligations as a whole. The second section consists of narrative descriptions beginning with a brief description of the Clinical Nutrition Research Units and a summary of their first annual meeting, which was held in FY 1981. Descriptions of the extramural and intramural research programs, and the nutrition research training program follow. Expanded descriptions (hi Highlights of the Special Interest Areas in Nutrition emphasize research of parti cular scientific interest. The 15 special interest areas are: Nutrition and Prevention of Disease, Nutritional Status, Behavioral Studies in Nutrition, Child and Infant Nutrition, Research Vitamins, Epidemio logical Research in Nutrition, Nutrition and Obesity, Nutrition and Genetics, Total Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Nutrition and Aging, Maternal Nutrition, International Research in Nutrition, Nutrition Edu cation for Professionals, Nutrition Education for the Public, and Nutri tion Education Research. Description : The latest of a series of publications based on workshops sponsored by the Committee on Military Nutrition Research, this book's focus on emerging technologies for nutrition research arose from a concern among scientists at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine that traditional nutrition research, using standard techniques, centered more on complex issues of the maintenance or enhancement of performance, and might not be sufficiently substantive either to measure changes in performance or to predict the effects on performance of stresses soldiers commonly experience in operational environments. The committee's task was to identify and evaluate new technologies to determine whether they could help resolve important issues in military nutrition research. The book contains the committee's summary and recommendations as well as individually authored chapters based on presentations at a 1995 workshop. Other chapters cover techniques of body composition assessment, tracer techniques for the study of metabolism, ambulatory techniques for the determination of energy expenditure, molecular and cellular approaches to nutrition, the assessment of immune function, and functional and behavioral measures of nutritional status.

Description : Abstract: In FY 1980 NIH obligated $139,121,000 for nutrition research and training through its 11 institutes and the Division of Research Resources, all of which is coordinated through the Nutrition Coordinating Committee. Programs consist of extramural classified by category of support mechanism into Regular Research Grants, Program Projects, Contracts, and Centers); and intermural (Research Projects and Training (fellowships). The extramural nutrition program supports nutrition research at universities (medical, dental, and public health), nutrition research training or manpower development. The intramural program in biomedical and behavioral nutrition research is usually carried out in the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md., though there are several off campus sites. Clinical studies, longitudinal studies on nutrient metabolism, and food toxicity in normal volunteers and patients in various disease states and animal studies are conducted, which focus on the effects of nutrition on mental, physical, and psychological development.
