Description : Hard Bargaining in Sumatra is an artfully written and penetrating examination of interactions between Western travelers and Toba Batak wood carvers in the souvenir marketplaces of Samosir Island, North Sumatra. Toba Batak carvings, ranging from simple human figures of wood to elaborately engraved water buffalo horns, are described in tourist guidebooks and by Toba Batak vendors alike as traditional and antique, despite many recent changes and inventions in form. This pathbreaking work investigates how notions of place and self are constructed by the travelers and the Bataks in the context of ethnic tourism. The author proposes that these interactions be understood in light of Louis Marin's concept of utopics, suggesting that tourist venues such as hotels and marketplaces are neutral spaces where both locals and visitors can act out behaviors that would ordinarily be constrained by their respective cultures. Rich in ethnographic description and employing a lively narrative style, Hard Bargaining in Sumatra is essential reading for students and scholars with interests in anthropology, cultural studies, globalization and tourism research, art history, and identity studies.

Description : The Fifth International Symposium of the Pacific Arts Association, titled "Art, Performance, and Society," called for papers in sessions dealing with "Production and Performance," "Social and Cultural Context," "The Record and the Remainder," and "The Mission of Museums." In all, some sixty papers were presented, twenty-four of which have been included in this book. The first two topics elicited several papers that explored the creative process, including the description and analysis of performance, and the taxonomy of objects used, the transmission of cultural knowledge, and the identity and work of individual artists. The second two topics provided the opportunity for papers on some significant early museum collectors and collections, various methods of documenting cultural material (such as photography), how cultural material has been and can be exhibited, and the role of museums and cultural centers in Pacific Island countries.

Description : Asmat Art features the world renowned woodcarvings of the Asmat, former head-hunters who live in the western half of New Guinea This book presents a full range of Asmat woodcarving art, but emphasizes the rare early shields and figure sculptures. Drums, canoe prowheads and the larger, more dramatic "objects" are also shown. Together with bisj poles, war shields are perhaps the most famous creation of Asmat artists, and these were carved throughout the region. It is in the design and construction of the shields that the variations in style region can most clearly be seen. Figure sculptures, of varying styles, are also well represented here, and a limited number of the huge ceremonial carvings, such as bisj poles and basu suangkus, have also been included. The cultural context in which these items play their part is described in detail in the introductory chapters. But it is not the intention of this book to be an ethnography. The focus is on the art pieces themselves.

Description : This volume investigates Pacific collections held in Australian museums, art galleries and archives, and the diverse group of 19th and 20th century collectors responsible for their acquisition. The nineteen essays reveal varied personal and institutional motivations that eventually led to the conservation, preservation and exhibition in Australia of a remarkable archive of Pacific Island material objects, art and crafts, photographs and documents. Hunting the Collectors benchmarks the importance of Pacific Collections in Australia and is a timely contribution to the worldwide renaissance of interest in Oceanic arts and cultures. The essays suggest that the custodial role is not fixed and immutable but fluctuates with the perceived importance of the collection, which in turn fluctuates with the level of national interest in the Pacific neighbourhood. This cyclical rise and fall of Australian interest in the Pacific Islands means many of the valuable early collections in state and later national repositories and institutions have been rarely exhibited or published. But, as the authors note, enthusiastic museum anthropologists, curators, collection managers and university-based scholars across Australia, and worldwide, have persisted with research on material collected in the Pacific. This volume is a very important one for anyone studying the art and material culture of the Pacific. It focuses on collections now in Australia. Even those well versed in museum collections from the Pacific will learn about many important but little-known collectors as well as better-known figures like the anthropologists F. E. Williams and Thomas Farrell, the husband of Queen Emma. This will be a treat for students and specialist alike. —Professor Robert L. Welsch, University of Dartmouth

Description : There were five. They came together for reasons that no one is even sure of anymore and cut a swath through the universe. Everyone knew their name, and the lined up to follow them. They knew their symbol, the snarling wolf. The warlords formed a following, an almost religion. And then it was over. Years later, and the followings of each of the original warriors have become clans. The clans have grown and trained new warriors over time, creating the driving force in all the universe. Here are four people now, training to follow in the ways of one particular wolf. The wolf that ended it all in the first place, the Blackwolf. This is the start of their journey, the beginning of their training. Gregor Holden, a Prince, who's sense of duty is equaled only by his lust for adventure. Candace Orthon, a legacy who's father is a Blackwolf, who's gradfather was a Blackwolf, and who will be a Blackwolf if it kills her. Ran Grastle, already an accomplished warrior in his own right. He's on the run for a committing a crime to exact justice and cares very little for the clan or anyone else. Xesca, a child of the last planet that the Blackwolf attacked. She has come to learn his ways, his style, so that no one can ever attack her planet again. "These four. If no one else, let these four progress."

Description : Textiles provide a visual history of a country's culture and crafting traditions in a way few other things can accomplish. In Textiles of Southeast Asia, Dr. Robyn Maxwell provides the definitive work on Southeast Asian textiles. Traditional textiles are one of the most widely collected and important categories of Southeast Asian art. Using an extensive range of locally produced raw materials and an astonishing array of techniques—including applique, weaving, batik and embroidery—the textiles of Southeast Asia are astonishing in their versatility and originality. Textiles are used to fashion everything from everyday clothing to sacred and ceremonial costumes, shrouds and wrapping cloths, hangings, banners and ritual regalia—all of which are represented and explained in Textiles of Southeast Asia. This authoritative text focuses on the changing relationship between indigenous Southeast Asian traditions and the outside influences continuing to be brought to the area, which change the nature of the region's textile traditions. This book considers the various ways Southeast Asian textile artisans reacted over the centuries to the steady stream of new and powerful ideas and raw materials arriving from India, China, the Islamic world and Europe. A detailed and definitive resource, Textiles of Southeast Asia is a welcome addition to the field of textiles.
