Shaping Summertime Experiences Book Excerpt:

For children and youth, summertime presents a unique break from the traditional structure, resources, and support systems that exist during the school year. For some students, this time involves opportunities to engage in fun and enriching activities and programs, while others face additional challenges as they lose a variety of supports, including healthy meals, medical care, supervision, and structured programs that enhance development. Children that are limited by their social, economic, or physical environments during the summer months are at higher risk for worse academic, health, social and emotional, and safety outcomes. In contrast, structured summertime activities and programs support basic developmental needs and positive outcomes for children and youth who can access and afford these programs. These discrepancies in summertime experiences exacerbate pre-existing academic inequities. While further research is needed regarding the impact of summertime on developmental domains outside of the academic setting, extensive literature exists regarding the impact of summertime on academic development trajectories. However, this knowledge is not sufficiently applied to policy and practice, and it is important to address these inequalities. Shaping Summertime Experiences examines the impact of summertime experiences on the developmental trajectories of school-age children and youth across four areas of well-being, including academic learning, social and emotional development, physical and mental health, and health-promoting and safety behaviors. It also reviews the state of science and available literature regarding the impact of summertime experiences. In addition, this report provides recommendations to improve the experiences of children over the summertime regarding planning, access and equity, and opportunities for further research and data collection.

Beyond Theory Book Excerpt:

Applying the insights of twentieth-century theory and philosophy, Bennett offers close readings of Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre, Holderlin's "An die Parzen," and Lessing's Laokoon, and he explores in detail the significance of Jewry in German dramatic discourse. The experiential German writing of the eighteenth century, he demonstrates, was grounded deeply and productively in irony, not subject to dissipation in mere ironic play.

Repertory Movie Theaters of New York City Book Excerpt:

New York’s repertory movie houses specialized in presenting films ignored by mainstream and art house audiences. Curating vintage and undistributed movies from various countries, they educated the public about the art of film at a time when the cinema had begun to be respected as an art form. Operating on shoestring budgets in funky settings, each repertory house had its own personality, reflecting the preferences of the (often eccentric) proprietor. While a few theaters existed in other cities, New York offered the greatest number and variety. Focusing on the active years from 1960 through 1994, this book documents the repertory movement in the context of economics and film culture.

Data driven Modelling of Structured Populations Book Excerpt:

This book is a “How To” guide for modeling population dynamics using Integral Projection Models (IPM) starting from observational data. It is written by a leading research team in this area and includes code in the R language (in the text and online) to carry out all computations. The intended audience are ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and mathematical biologists interested in developing data-driven models for animal and plant populations. IPMs may seem hard as they involve integrals. The aim of this book is to demystify IPMs, so they become the model of choice for populations structured by size or other continuously varying traits. The book uses real examples of increasing complexity to show how the life-cycle of the study organism naturally leads to the appropriate statistical analysis, which leads directly to the IPM itself. A wide range of model types and analyses are presented, including model construction, computational methods, and the underlying theory, with the more technical material in Boxes and Appendices. Self-contained R code which replicates all of the figures and calculations within the text is available to readers on GitHub. Stephen P. Ellner is Horace White Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University, USA; Dylan Z. Childs is Lecturer and NERC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at The University of Sheffield, UK; Mark Rees is Professor in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at The University of Sheffield, UK.

Two ebooks for the price of one! Old flames reunite for a second chance at love in this $4.99 ebook duo from beloved, bestselling author Carolyn Brown and rising star Nicole Helm. Includes an excerpt from Nicole Helm's new holiday romance, True-Blue Cowboy Christmas. Hell, Yeah: Cathy O'Dell has been all over the country, but she never felt at home until she moved into the tiny apartment at the back of the Honky Tonk beer joint. Now she figures she's here to stay, loving every minute of the rowdy crowd, down-home juke box music, and constant pool tournaments. She's a beautiful blonde with big blue eyes and enough sass to make a grown man beg for mercy. Then gorgeous, rich, oil man Travis Henry gets it into his fool head that Cathy deserves a better life—with him, of course—and the sparks start to fly so bad they're like to set fire to the beer joint, if they don't go up in flames themselves first! Outlaw Cowboy: Ever since his father's accident, Caleb promised his older sister that he'd fix his terrible reputation. But when Delia Rogers, the town's baddest of the bad girls, needs his help hiding from the cops, Caleb is torn between his squeaky new image and his outlaw roots. Delia's out of options, so asking her reformed ex for help is her only choice. When a helping hand and seriously close quarters turn into more, Delia can't help but fall all over again...but she has a secret that will ruin everything, unless they're both willing to leave their reputations behind for something much more lasting.
