Description : This dissertation uncovers how informal and self-organized communities of practice as a source of learning and adaptability are embedded in their formal organizational surroundings. Based on an interpretative case study of three communities of practice within the German Federal Armed Forces, the author theorizes this embeddedness as shaped through cultural dynamics and leadership processes. In particular, the author draws on a practice lens and complexity leadership theory in explaining how communities of practice generate new resources (i.e., adaptability), produce and reproduce broader socio-cultural structures, and are enabled as well as influenced by formal leadership. The Author Benjamin Schulte is a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Technology and Innovation Management at the Helmut Schmidt University University of the German Federal Armed Forces. He examines the micro-processes and dynamics of organizational adaptability and innovativeness, mostly utilizing qualitative research methods and a practice lens viewpoint. In particular, he currently studies how adaptive and innovative practices such as the lean startup method are introduced, translated, and embedded in the broader socio-cultural and institutional context of established bureaucratic organizations. His research has been published in the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies and the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management.

Description : The Practice of Organizational Diagnosis: Theory & Methods presents a new paradigm for examining the intergroup dynamics of organizations by combining the procedures of organizational diagnosis with the theory of embedded intergroup relations. In this volume, Alderfer explains the relevance of the paradigm concept for the present work, shows the importance of intergroup relations in the formative organization studies, reviews extant modes of organizational diagnosis, and demonstrates the limitations of interpersonal and intra-group theories. He then presents the five laws of embedded intergroup relations as a response to the problems associated with the earlier work. He follows that by reporting the empirical bases for the methods used in the four phases. A recurring theme from beginning to end is that the lawfulness of human behavior in relation to organizations is as applicable to diagnosticians, whether working alone or in teams, as it is to their clients. Description : This book studies relevant actors and practices of conflict intervention by African regional organizations and their intimate connection to space-making, addressing a major gap regarding what actually happens within and around these organizations. Based on extensive empirical research, it argues that those intervention practices are essentially spatializing practices, based on particular spatial imaginations, contributing to the continuous construction and formatting of regional spaces as well as to ordering relations between different regional spaces.
