Fleshing Out America Book Excerpt:

Can we work through the imaginative space of literature to combat the divisive nature of the politics of the body? That is the central question asked of the writings Carolyn Sorisio investigates in Fleshing Out America. The first half of the nineteenth century ushered in an era of powerful scientific and quasi-scientific disciplines that assumed innate differences between the "types" of humankind. Some proponents of slavery and Indian Removal, as well as opponents of women's rights, supplanted the Declaration of Independence's higher law of inborn equality with a new set of "laws" proclaiming the physical inferiority of women, "Negroes," and "Aboriginals." Fleshing Out America explores the representation of the body in the work of seven authors, all of whom were involved with their era's reform movements: Lydia Maria Child, Frances E. W. Harper, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Walt Whitman, Harriet Jacobs, and Martin R. Delany. For such American writers, who connected the individual body symbolically with the body politic, the new science was fraught with possibility and peril. Covering topics from representation, spectatorship, and essentialism to difference, power, and authority, Carolyn Sorisio places these writers' works in historical context and in relation to contemporary theories of corporeality. She shows how these authors struggled, in diverse and divergent ways, to flesh out America--to define, even defend, the nation's body in a tumultuous period. Drawing on Euro- and African American authors of both genders who are notable for their aesthetic and political differences, Fleshing Out America demonstrates the surprisingly diverse literary conversation taking place as American authors attempted to reshape the politics of the body, which shaped the politics of the time.

Selling Out America s Children Book Excerpt:

In Selling Out America's Children, author David Walsh examines why essential morals and values are missing in today's youth. We sell violence, irresponsible sex, and materialism to our children with the overwhelming power of modern media; in light of such odds, it is not surprising that parents find it increasingly difficult to counteract society's harmful messages. - Back cover.

Rush Limbaugh I Hope He Fails Bailed out America Book Excerpt:

RUSH LIMBAUGH, I HOPE HE FAILS, BAILED OUT AMERICA, is Rushs industry. Rush Limbaughs fingerprints are all over the book. The bulk of the book contains brilliant perspectives from Rush Limbaugh on the twenty-one months of the Obama presidency, the destructive liberalism ideology and the bitter truth about racism and many more issues that we faced. The book also covers the 2008 general election, the scheduled 2010 midterm elections and the effectiveness of the four words I hope he fails. About Barack Obama, Rush said Radicalism comes dressed in many ways. This time its dressed up as Barack Obama. About the future of America, Rush said And with nothing to stop him {Obama}, theres nothing to stop him. And as theres nothing to stop him hes going to continue to try to get away with as much as he can, and at some point people are gonna go, Wait a minute, I didnt think I was going to have to go to DMV to withdraw money from my bank. Rush Limbaughs comment I hope he fails turned water into wine. It significantly transformed the Republican Party from a stale, near extinct Party that lost the presidency and both houses of Congress to a Party brimming with confidence and with concrete signs of winning back both houses of Congress from the Democratic Party within 24 months of electing a Democrat as the first African American United States president. The impact of Rushs words also rendered some of Obamas radical agendas dead in the water. It remains to be seen if Obama and the Democratic Party will reverse the wine back to water. Rush has harsh messages for those Republican lawmakers who would rather compromise their core values than be subjected to withering and vile criticism by their opponent. After twenty-one months of a torrid reign as president, are Obamas salad days as president over? Has Obama finally turned the corner? It all remains to be seen. Rush Limbaughs criticism of President Obama is not for political expedient. Its for the survival of this great country. We will find out why, after 20 years, Rush continues to be Americas last man standing.

Macho Man The Disco Era and Gay America s Coming Out Book Excerpt:

The Vietnam War was over and America seemed in the midst of a nationwide party. The self-proclaimed Me generation was flocking to discotheques, recreational drug use was high, and sexual taboos were being shattered nationwide. Then The Village People appeared on the music scene. Never before had gay sexuality been as up-front and in the face of America. The Village People struck a cultural nerve and fueled a craze that had them playing to sold-out crowds at Madison Square Garden. Even today, few adults could not at least hum the tunes to Y.M.C.A. and Macho Man. Because of the unique role they played in the United States of the late 1970s, The Village People are able to provide a powerful lens through which to view the emergence and development of gay culture in America. In Macho Man, readers can travel back with one of the first gay icons in popular music, and a top pop culture biographer, as they describe this complicated process of change. In these pages, Randy Jones, the original cowboy in the band, takes us inside the time period, the discos, and the new musical style that was in many ways unprecedented in giving a voice to a previously closeted gay culture. Assisted by Mark Bego, one of the most popular and prolific pop culture authors working today, Jones shows how the fast-lane rise, fall, and rebirth of this novel band paralleled activities across the last 40 years within the gay culture and gay rights movement. The work concludes with a gayography — a listing of openly gay musicians and performers in the United States before and since The Village People - along with a discography and filmography. This work will interest pop culture and music enthusiasts, in addition to scholars in gay studies.
