The first book in C. S. Lewis's acclaimed Space Trilogy, which continues with Perelandra and That Hideous Strength, Out of the Silent Planet begins the adventures of the remarkable Dr. Ransom. Here, that estimable man is abducted by a megalomaniacal physicist and his accomplice and taken via spaceship to the red planet of Malacandra. The two men are in need of a human sacrifice, and Dr. Ransom would seem to fit the bill. Once on the planet, however, Ransom eludes his captors, risking his life and his chances of returning to Earth, becoming a stranger in a land that is enchanting in its difference from Earth and instructive in its similarity. First published in 1943, Out of the Silent Planet remains a mysterious and suspenseful tour de force.

Out of the Silent Planet Book Excerpt:

Just as readers have been transfixed by the stories, characters, and deeper meanings of Lewis's timeless tales in The Chronicles of Narnia, most find this same allure in his classic Space Trilogy. In these fantasy stories for adults, we encounter, once again, magical creatures, a world of wonders, epic battles, and revelations of transcendent truths. Out of the Silent Planet is the first novel in C. S. Lewis's classic science fiction trilogy. It tells the adventure of Dr. Ransom, a Cambridge academic, who is abducted and taken on a spaceship to the red planet of Malacandra, which he knows as Mars. His captors are plotting to plunder the planet's treasures and plan to offer Ransom as a sacrifice to the creatures who live there. Ransom discovers he has come from the "silent planet"—Earth—whose tragic story is known throughout the universe!

Out of the Silent Planet Study Guide CD ROM Book Excerpt:

While on a walking tour through England, Dr. Elwin Ransom becomes an unwilling guest at the home of Dr. Weston, a physicist. Weston and his colleague Dr. Devine kidnap Ransom and take him to the planet Malacandra. Ransom believes that he is meant to be handed over to the inhabitants of Malacandra as a human sacrifice. On Malacandra, Weston and Devine try to present Ransom to the beings that come to meet them, but Ransom panics and escapes when the men are attacked by a large sea creature. Alone on an alien world, Ransom discovers that he has no survival skills that apply to his surroundings. Barely able to tell the difference between animals and plants or plants and rocks, he is unsure what to trust as safe - even his sanity begins to dissolve. Driven by curiosity, he establishes contact with what appears to be a friendly seal-like animal. The creature gives him food and drink and takes him to its village. Ransom settles into a peaceful life with these beings, the hrossa, and slowly finds his ideas about life, religion, and humanity stretched to new horizons. But before long, Ransom is summoned before the ruler of Malacandra. Fearfully and humbly, Ransom travels to meet the mysterious ruler of this strange world. Once again, Ransom finds his assumptions about life and the workings of the universe shattered. Out of the Silent Planet is the first of three books by C.S. Lewis about Dr. Ransom. Ransom's adventures are continued in Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. Interactive CD-rom.

THE SPACE TRILOGY Out of the Silent Planet Perelandra That Hideous Strength Book Excerpt:

The famous "Space Trilogy" of C.S Lewis deals with what he saw as the dehumanizing trends in contemporary science fiction. The first book, Out of the Silent Planet, was apparently written following a conversation with his friend J.R.R. Tolkien about these trends. Lewis's main character Elwin Ransom is based in part on Tolkien, a fact to which Tolkien alludes in his letters. The second novel, Perelandra, depicts a new Garden of Eden on the planet Venus, a new Adam and Eve, and a new "serpent figure" to tempt Eve. The story can be seen as an account of what might have happened if the terrestrial Adam had defeated the serpent and avoided the Fall of Man, with Ransom intervening in the novel to "ransom" the new Adam and Eve from the deceptions of the enemy. The third novel, That Hideous Strength, develops the theme of nihilistic science threatening traditional human values, embodied in Arthurian legend. Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic and lay theologian. He is best known for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Space Trilogy

Together with his brother Warnie, and his friends J.R.R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, and others, C.S. Lewis made up an intellectual group which called themselves the Inklings. The joke, of course, was a literary one, for Lewis, above all, the heaven-directed was never lacking. (Christian)

Abolishing Man in Other Worlds Book Excerpt:

This text investigates why C. S. Lewis brings humans into outer space in order to recover a Christian worldview during a time of war. Lewis’s science fiction trilogy was published throughout the WWII era, and his readers were all too familiar with advances in technological warfare and the biological experimentation of the Nazi agenda. To recover a Christian worldview during such a tumultuous time, the first two installments of the trilogy bring humans into outer space in order to reconnect with the Cosmic Chain of Being. Malacandra and Perelandra depict all beings coexisting in the Great Dance that Maleldil creates. In the last installment, Lewis’s N.I.C.E. reflects experimentation carried out in some concentration camps during WWII. Lewis’s return to Earth in the last book of the trilogy calls for readers to acknowledge our broken Chain of Being and recover our faith in God rather than attempt to become gods ourselves. Explore Lewis’s science fiction through J. R. R. Tolkien’s Recovery lens for a connection between Lewis’s Christian worldview, the potential for human self-abolition, and recovering the Cosmic Chain of Being for modern humans.
