Description : Recently withdrawn from the horrors of the Russian Front, the 1st SS Panzer Division Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler, are ordered to Belgium for a complete overhaul and refit of its war-torn troops and panzers. Due to growing uncertainty they are redirected on this journey eventually arriving in Innsbruck. With only a few weeks respite, they find themselves stationed in Italy along the Po River Plain to carry out the disarming of several Italian army units, following the capitulation of Italy as allies to the Third Reich. It is not long before they are embroiled in deadly anti-partisan operations during most of their stay in the country, and then they are directed back to face the colossal Red Army tidal wave of men and machines once again along the Eastern Front. Still waiting for their panzers to arrive, the 1st SS are forced into bloody hand to hand trench warfare heavily outnumbered each day. Intelligence reports indicate the Russians are planning a huge attack, which threatens to wipe out the 1st SS and other defending German Divisions, unless they can thwart this advance with a plan of their own, using the limited, heavily outnumbered troops and panzers at their disposal. Description : On 2 August 1944, in the wake of the complete destruction of the German Army Group Centre in Belorussia, Winston Churchill mocked Adolf Hitler in the House of Commons by the rank he had reached in the First World War. 'Russian success has been somewhat aided by the strategy of Herr Hitler, of Corporal Hitler,' Churchill jibed. 'Even military idiots find it difficult not to see some faults in his actions.' Andrew Roberts's previous book Masters and Commanders studied the creation of Allied grand strategy; Beating Corporal Hitler now analyses how Axis strategy evolved. Examining the Second World War on every front, Roberts asks whether, with a different decision-making process and a different strategy, the Axis might even have won. Were those German generals who blamed everything on Hitler after the war correct, or were they merely scapegoating their former Führer once he was safely beyond defending himself? In researching this uniquely vivid history of the Second World War Roberts has walked many of the key battlefield and wartime sites of Russia, France, Italy, Germany and the Far East. The book is full of illuminating sidelights on the principle actors that bring their characters and the ways in which they reached decisions into fresh focus.

Description : The leading expert on Soviet military history resurrects a failed World War II campaign that the official Russian history seeks to erase from memory. Reconstructing the Red Army's first invasion of Romania in the spring of 1944, Glantz shows that despite the campaign's abysmal failure, it provided a clear indication of Stalin's strong interest in the Balkans and further damaged the German army's ability to stop the Soviet war machine in its drive toward Berlin.

Description : A fascinating account of Nazi Germany's armored forces by the author of Patton and Rommel. Determined to secure a quick, decisive victory on the World War II battlefields, Adolf Hitler adopted an attack plan that combined tools with technique- the formidable Panzer divisions. Self-contained armored units able to operate independently, the Panzers became the German army's fighting core as well as its moral focus, establishing an entirely new military doctrine. In Hitler's Panzers, renowned World War II scholar Dennis Showalter presents a comprehensive and unbiased study of Nazi Germany's armored forces. By delving deeply into a detailed history of the theory, strategy, myths, and realities of Germany's technologically innovative approach to warfare, Showalter provides a look at the military lessons of the past, and a speculation on how the Panzer ethos may be implemented in the future of international conflict.
