Mechanisms for Long Term Innovation Book Excerpt:

This book explores how a long-term innovation can take place based on historical analyses of the development of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane from the early 1950s to the mid-2010s. The RO membrane is a critical material for desalination that is a key to solve water shortages becoming serious in many places of the world. The authors conducted in-depth field studies as well as analyses of rich archival data to demonstrate how researchers, engineers, managers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers interacted each other for this material innovation to be realized. A series of historical analyses in this book uncovered that initial government supports, strategic niche markets, emergence of breakthrough technology, and company-specific rationales played significant roles for companies to overcome four types of uncertainty, technological, market, competition, and social/organizational ones, and enabled the companies to persistently invest in the development and commercialization of the RO membrane. This book depicts that innovation does not arise on a sudden, but that it is actualized through long lasting process with turns and twists, which is driven by many non-economic rationales beyond economic motives.

This book is a comprehensive collection of cases, statutes, regulations and readings focused on the commercial development of new technologies, primarily by start-up and early-stage companies. It defines the technology innovation process as the set of decisions and actions by which an invention is transformed from a laboratory prototype into a commercially viable product or process; and defines the technology innovation period as the time between the point of invention (reduction to practice) and the point of market introduction. Technology Innovation Law and Practice addresses the gap in academic attention paid to the field of technology innovation. The book provides students, faculty and practitioners, both in law and other disciplines, with a single source of in-depth information on the laws that affect the technology innovation process. The book is unique in its interdisciplinary focus, in its emphasis on start-up and early-stage technology companies, and in its combination of instructional and reference materials.

It is a significant story: New Zealanders look to business enterprises for wealth, jobs and the products and services to live and to trade. In exploring the behaviour of ten carefully chosen firms the book shows how they overcame the disadvantages of size and distance to make an impact in world markets and to sustain it. This is not only a narrative of each firm's path to success, it is also an empirical analysis of the factors which assured that success. It discusses, for example, innovation, operations strategy, human resource management, the impact of national culture, the role of government.

Hydrogen and fuel cells are vital technologies to ensure a secure and CO2-free energy future. Their development will take decades of extensive public and private effort to achieve technology breakthroughs and commercial maturity.Government research programmes are indispensable for catalysing the development process. This report maps the IEA countries current efforts to research, develop and deploy the interlocking elements that constitute a hydrogen economy, including CO2 capture and storage when hydrogen is produced out of fossil fuels. It provides an overview of what is being done, and by whom, covering an extensive complexity of national government R&D programmes. The survey highlights the potential for exploiting the benefits of the international co-operation.This book draws primarily upon information contributed by IEA governments. Media Governance Book Excerpt:

The book offers a critical map to navigate the field of media governance. A thread of cosmopolitan critique connects the fourteen chapters to enhance media governance literature beyond the West and regional foci. The first part addresses the epistemological and ontological flaws in the use and adaptation of media governance. The second part opens pathways for critique and provides a thorough understanding of the ambivalences that scholars encounter when addressing media governance as a field of study. The third part highlights shortcomings like geographical narrowness and tensions in the use of media governance concepts. The scholarly contributions show that media governance as a field of study is far from being established: its conceptualizations are in flux and need scholarly self-reflection, and ongoing discussions need to leave behind universalist conceptualizations and methods of analysis. The chapters reflect on hegemony, power, sovereignty, and identity as conceptual center points in media governance research. The book uniquely breaks with self-referential Western academia and is part of ongoing collaborative scholarly efforts towards epistemic transformation through dialogue.
