Chinese companies have been increasingly active in outbound investment in recent years, with Germany the third largest destination in Europe. Adopting an analytical approach and utilizing case studies and expert interviews, this book examines Chinese mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in Germany, with a focus on the companies’ business growth, particularly the integration process and subsequent growth after acquisition. The authors contend that Chinese investors take a different approach than their western counterparts, by fostering a long-term orientation toward their investments and placing greater emphasis on co-evolution with the acquired firms rather than transfer of knowledge back to China. This book offers readers a behind-the-scenes story of three separate M&A cases, shedding light on the growth models that ensue from mergers and acquisitions, and the endeavors of Chinese and German managers to grow the businesses together.

China's outward foreign direct investment, for which Australia is one of the largest destinations, has rapidly increased and become an important source of global capital. Nevertheless, Chinese investors have encountered many challenges in making their investment decisions and managing their foreign direct investments for sustainable development and profitability. Managing Chinese Outward Foreign Direct Investment focuses on the management of Chinese outward foreign direct investment, particularly foreign subsidiaries established through merger and acquisition, at the organisational level. Considering investment as a process, the book addresses complex managerial issues from strategic entry decisions to corporate sustainable development. Particular emphases have been placed on the post-acquisition integration and management such as liability of foreignness mitigation, post-acquisition integration, corporate control and governance, human resources and cross-cultural management, and corporate social responsibility.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 1,3, Berlin School of Economics and Law, language: English, abstract: The following thesis deals with Chinese outward foreign direct investments (OFDI) in Germany and the effects of post-merger integration on labor relations. As a result of the economic reforms that have been taking place in China for the past four decades, the People’s Republic has become an economic giant, rapidly making cross-border investments across the globe. Backed by large amounts of currency reserves, China’s OFDI reached a record-breaking US$ 114 billion in 2014, making it one of the top three global investors. The impending acquisition of Swiss Syngenta by China’s state-owned enterprise China National Chemical (ChemChina), worth over US$ 43 billion dollars, illustrates the aggressive expansion into new markets. Germany has also received its share of FDI inflows from China. While investments have remained rather modest in comparison to other countries, the acquisition of KraussMaffei Gruppe or EEF Energy From Waste GmbH—worth billions of euros—have headlined Chinese M&A in Germany. Chinese have topped the M&A discussions in Germany due to the speed at which so-called "hidden champions" are being acquired. The process of M&A is particularly of interest to us, specifically the post-merger integration (PMI) and the effects it has on labor relations. This thesis will begin with a literature review on the current and past state of knowledge regarding PMI. Definitions of mergers, acquisitions and integration are given at the start of chapter two, followed in the second half by the various streams of literature pertaining to the topic. Chapter three will introduce the concept of Chinese FDI and the developments of the past 40 years; in the second half of the chapter, we will present the methodology of research we have chosen for the study and the various methods used. Chapter four consists of two case studies of German companies in the automotive sector that have recently been acquired by Chinese multi-national corporations (MNCs). From these case studies, we will make our analysis in chapter five and provide our conclusions in chapter six.

China is one of the fastest developing emerging economies in the world today. The country has a huge influence on a global level, both politically and economically. Despite this, very few books cover both the full range of management functions, and the key issues facing managers in this unique business environment. The Changing Face of Management in China explores the key challenges facing businesses and managers in China, across management functions, as well as across a range of sectors and organization types. Written by prominent scholars with direct experience in this market, this book adds to the existing body of knowledge by examining a range of areas of Chinese management in the context of local political, economic and social traditions, and the global economy. Part of the successful Working in Asia series, this book includes case studies that allow the voices of local managers to be heard, as well as extensive bibliographies pointing students and researchers to the most up-to-date sources of information in this important area.

This book assesses Chinese acquisitions in developed countries, evaluates the drivers and opportunities and, above all, explores the major operational challenges. It discusses topics such as cross-cultural issues, integration strategies, risk and resilience, the influence of emerging technologies, servitization, impacts on reshoring, corporate social responsibility, branding strategies, knowledge management, and transfer of best practices. While emerging market multinational corporations’ (EMNCs) use of mergers and acquisitions as a strategic vehicle has received considerable attention, much less is known about their post-entry activities, such as the implementation of post-acquisition and integration strategies. It can be expected that, compared with their Western counterparts, EMNCs will face radically different challenges that may undermine the success of their products, brands and marketing. Addressing these issues by means of a case study approach, this book is an ideal teaching resource for a variety of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. It also appeals to academics, researchers, and practitioners with a keen interest in manufacturing industry.

China has matured as a market—and the game has changed. Yesterday, multinationals grappled with fundamental strategic choices: Do we go to China? Whom do we partner with? Where should we invest? Winning in China was all about achieving approval to enter the market, picking the right joint venture partner and selling in the right few cities to the right customers. Execution didn’t matter as much as privileged access—through government and partner relationships. Today, China is teeming with MNCs and local competitors. Government is no longer the main driver of deals. Barriers to entry have fallen. Regulations are less of a factor. Partners are no longer required in many industries. Winning now depends on great execution: effectively and efficiently developing, marketing, producing, and channeling goods to customers and growing and retaining a talent base. In Operation China, Jimmy Hexter and Jonathan Woetzel explain how you can achieve superior execution in China—through operations including talent management, product development, information technology, procurement, supply-chain management, manufacturing, and sales, marketing, and distribution. Based on over two decades of consulting experience for both local and multinational operations in China and extensive research on what drives success in operating in China, this book helps you get your operations right in the new competitive arena defining China today.

Chinese outward direct investment (ODI) is growing rapidly in recent years. As an important phenomenon in the global economy, China’s ODI deserves more thorough analysis. This book looks at China’s ODI activities from multi-perspectives. With the rebalancing of China’s own structural growth and China’s shift towards a net capital exporter, her initiatives such as "One Belt One Road (OBOR)" have brought profound implications to the traditional super-sovereign or multilateral financial and investment cooperation mechanism. As her investment destinations and investment methods become more diversified and sophisticated, this book offers unique and refreshing insight into China’s ODI activities. The book covers the whole range of history and policy development of China’s ODI and analyses China’s ODI trends and characteristics in the recent years. It reviews China’s major policy changes after the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party and how they may impact China’s ODI strategy and activities. The book addresses potential challenges and risks of rising ODI activities from practitioners’ perspective, and discusses how recipient countries may react and respond to the surge of Chinese capital. The book also offers policy implications and future research agenda in relation to the Chinese investments.
