Description : This new book, Eloquent Silence, brings depth and breadth to our knowledge and appreciation of this historic figure. For the first time, we can read Nyogen Senzaki's commentaries on the complete Gateless Gate, as well as on several cases from the Blue Rock Collection and the Book of Equanimity; and transcriptions of his talks on Zen, esoteric Buddhism, the Lotus Sutra, what it means to be a Buddhist monk, and many other subjects. Eloquent Silence also includes poems in Nyogen Senzaki's beautiful calligraphic hand (and his own translations); two early letters to his teacher, Soyen Shaku (who represented Japan at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893), as well as a partial autobiography of Soyen Shaku; a series of letters in response to an article by Nyogen Senzaki that was severely critical of the Japanese Zen establishment; and rare photographs. Roko Sherry Chayat has edited Nyogen Senzaki's words with sensitivity and grace, retaining his wry, probing style yet bringing clarity and accessibility to these remarkably contemporary teachings.

Description : This book explores the advantages of and challenges concerning Special Religious Education (SRE) in multicultural Australia and argues for the need for General Religious Education (GRE) as well. Through the lens of the most recent scholarship, and drawing on an in-depth qualitative study and specific case studies, the book examines the current debate on the role of religious education within government schools. It addresses key concepts of values education, spirituality, health and wellbeing, and cultural and religious identity. It analyses why it is important to retain SRE, together with GRE, as government policy. It explores highly relevant, controversial and contested issues regarding SRE, including the 30% of Australia’s population who declare themselves as having “no religion”, and brings fresh insights to the table. While secularization has increased in both the national and international spheres, there has also been an increase in fundamentalism within religious beliefs. Events such as the September 11 terror attacks and the more recent mass shootings by white supremacists and eco-fascists in Christchurch, New Zealand, and Pittsburgh and San Diego in the USA are reminders that religion is still a major actor in the twenty-first century. This poses new challenges for the relationship between church and state, and demonstrates the need to revisit the role of religious education within government schools. While the importance of GRE is generally acknowledged, SRE has increasingly come under attack by some researchers and teacher and parent bodies as being inappropriate and contradictory to the values of the postmodern world. On the other hand, the key stakeholders from all the faith traditions in Australia wish to retain the SRE classes in government schools. The book addresses this burning issue, and shows that it is relevant not only for Australia but also globally.

Description : This book adopts the format of the editorsÆ previous book, Buddhists Talk about Jesus, Christians Talk about the Buddha. In that book eight scholar-practitioners--four of them Buddhist and four Christian--explored their relationship to the great religious figure of the other tradition. Then the remaining contributors, two from each tradition, addressed themselves, rebuttal fashion, to the views expressed. In the new book the subject is the differences and similarities between Buddhist meditation and Christian prayer. What can a Christian, for example, learn from the mental and physical rigor of Buddhist meditative practice? What can a Buddhist learn from traditional Christian prayer? Can one mix distinct religious identity (Christian) with practice techniques associated with another religion (Buddhist) without compromising the religious specificity of either the identities or the techniques? Christian contributors include Frances S. Adeney, Mary Frohlich, Paul O. Ingram, Ursula King, Terry C. Muck, Yagi Seiichi, and Bardwell Smith. Buddhist contributors include Robert Aitken, Grace Burford, Rita Gross, John Makransky, Ken Tanaka, Robert Thurman, and Taitetsu Unno.

Fighting Spirit of Zen is Duke's 1974 treatise on how the spirit of Zen relates to the martial arts, and life generally. First published in 1980, Holistic Meditation tells how this powerful technique can help you succeed in your goals. * Jerry Kunzman: "Duke was one of a kind and, like the other 'greats of yesteryear', can never be replaced. But his words and teachings can live forever in his writings." * Rick Alemany: "We were all fortunate to have known Duke. He was way ahead of his time and it was a great loss to the Martial Arts world when he passed." * James Moses: "This text teaches meditation as a skill that can be learned, taught, practiced, and mastered." * Ferol Arce: "Duke always had a twinkle in his eyes, and always made you feel as though you were on the right track with what ever you were trying to accomplish."

Description : The Coronavirus pandemic is causing a historic and unprecedented rise in mental crises, across the world. Fear, worry, stress, anxiety, burnout are words that have entered our daily vocabulary. The bad news is that it will not get better – stress and anxiety are here to stay. The good news is that we can handle it more positively, by practicing meditation. Meditation is much more than “blanking” your mind. There will always remain some thoughts, some emotions “zip-lining” across your mind! Meditation helps us to be aware of them “passing”, and then to just let them “pass”. The book helps to explain what meditation is, how it can be done, and what the benefits are – in a very simplistic and interesting style, interspersed with various graphic illustrations, as well as the personal experiences of the author, which have been shared quite openly! It is a book with various new concepts and “experiments”, which will appeal to a newcomer in the world of meditation, as well as to the experienced ones. It is a book that will make you think first, and then help control your thinking! It is a book that will change your relationship with your own self, with the world, and with your partner for sure!

Description : It's a sensible enough notion that our unconscious would contain valuable insights, given that all we experience is stored there. Yet the idea of accessing those insights can be an elusive one, and until now, the subject usually has been discussed in abstract terms. Dream Finder pioneers a more concrete, practical approach for using dream incubation to tap the wisdom of the unconscious and to be guided by it in waking life. Author Philip Dunn offers four distinct meditation techniques to try before sleep in preparation for dreaming. Instructions to follow during sleep include specific methods of entering a lucid dream, recognizing the dream state from within it, remaining in or returning to the lucid dream, performing tasks in and controlling the direction of the dream, neutralizing a nightmare, and waking from a dream. Dunn also provides techniques to use after waking to remember, record, and understand dreams, gives helpful guidelines for interpretation, and illuminates familiar dream themes. In addition to refreshingly straightforward, actionable instruction, Dream Finder provides thought-provoking reflections on the spiritual aspects of dreaming, as well as fascinating historical context for the techniques and theories presented. Dream Finder is a rare combination of useful, uplifting, and compelling reading.
