Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Book Excerpt:

"Why are there no effective treatments for my condition? Why do researchers exclude patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis from enrolling in clinical trials? Please let me know if you hear of studies that I might be allowed to enter or treatments that I could try for my condition. " Thus, in recent years, the sad lament of the patient with primary progressive MS (PPMS). This variant, often in the guise of a chronic progressive myelopathy or, less commonly, progressive cerebellar or bulbar dysfunction, usually responds poorly to corticosteroids and rarely seems to benefit to a significant degree from intensive immunosuppressive treatments. In recent years, most randomized clin ical trials have excluded PPMS patients on two counts. Clinical worsening devel ops slowly in PPMS and may not be recognized during the course of a 2-or 3-year trial even in untreated control patients. This factor alone adds to the potential for a type 2 error or, at the very least, inflates the sample size and duration of the trial. In addition, there is mounting evidence that progressive axonal degeneration and neuronal loss (rather than active, recurrent inflammation) may be important components of the pathology in this form of the disease. Although contemporary trials are evaluating whether PPMS patients may benefit from treatment with the ~-interferons and glatiramer acetate, preliminary, uncontrolled clinical experi ence suggests that the results may not be dramatic.

When a parent or parental figure is diagnosed with an illness, the family unit changes and clinical providers should consider using a family-centered approach to care, and not just focus on the patient coping with the illness. Helping Children and Families Cope with Parental Illness describes theoretical frameworks, common parental illnesses and their course, family assessment tools, and evidence-supported family intervention programs that have the potential to significantly reduce negative psychosocial outcomes for families and promote resilience. Most interventions described are culturally sensitive, for use with diverse populations in diverse practice settings, and were developed for two-parent, single-parent, and blended families.

Multiple Sclerosis Book Excerpt:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, often progressive, and potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system. Onset of disease is usually between the ages of 15 and 50, with the incidence nearly twice as high in women. While the cause of MS is still unknown, the predominant theory is that it is an autoimmune disease, triggered by an unknown environmental factor that results in both loss of central nervous system myelin and degeneration of axons and neurons. Although there have been a number of publications addressing different aspects of MS treatment in the neurological literature, there is a dearth of material on MS designed for internists and primary care physicians, who are often the first to see patients presenting with symptoms of MS. Therefore, this concise, clinically focused volume will serve as a valuable resource tailored to the specific needs of internists and primary care physicians. Part of the Oxford Neurology Library, this highly practical pocketbook covers current approaches and new developments in the diagnosis, treatment and management of MS, including both early and advanced stages of the disease. The book offers in-depth coverage of special populations, as well as the more unusual manifestations of MS, which are less familiar to the internal medicine audience. It will also address the role of imaging studies in the diagnosis, differential diagnosis and monitoring of the progression of MS. In addition to providing up-to-date information on pharmacological therapies for MS, the book also describes an array of non-pharmacological treatment options.

Multiple sclerosis MS Book Excerpt:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of unknown aetiology that affects the white matter of the central nervous system (CNS). The symptoms of multiple sclerosis are diverse, depending on the location and size of the CNS inflammatory lesions (plaques). MS is divided into subtypes: relapsing-remitting, secondary progressive and primary progressive. The relapsing-remitting form is the most common. MS is diagnosed on the basis of clinical presentation, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Pulse corticosteroid therapy is used to manage acute exacerbations. The first-line disease-modifying agents indicated for long-term therapy are interferon beta and glatiramer acetate. Natalizumab or fingolimod are used in particularly aggressive disease forms. No curative therapy exists as yet. Disease progress is individual. According to current estimations, MS decreases the patient's life expectancy by about 7 years.

Multiple Sclerosis Book Excerpt:

This latest edition to the 'Contemporary Neurology Series' will fill one of the few remaining 'neurologic gaps' within the Series. 'Multiple Sclerosis,' written solely by Moses Rodriguez, Orhun Kantarci and Istvan Pirko of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN will offer proven, effective treatments for specific presentations and symptoms of multiple sclerosis along with a pathophysiological explanation of why they work. It bridges a needed gap between overly simplistic therapy manuals and basic science texts that discuss human disease only insofar as it mimics what is observed in animal models of the disease in the laboratory. Additionally, it seeks to offer an efficient integrative approach to symptomatic treatment to avoid over-medication and side effects. It discusses the heterogeneous causes of the disease and the need to develop individualized treatments that address the basic pathophysiologic processes that characterize each patient's disease with the future goal of individualized medicine. 'Multiple Sclerosis' covers both the basic research aspects of MS: epidemiology, neuropathology, genetics, and immunology as well as the treatment options associated with the MS patient: sleep, steroids, pharma, neuropsychology, and growth factors (to name a few). 'Multiple Sclerosis' will focus on the medical treatment - drug treatment - of MS rather than on physical medicine and rehabilitation (not the author's strength). The authors will also make ample use of flow diagrams, bulleted points, and tables to help the reader better understand MS and its etiology and treatment.

30 Day Journal and Tracker Reversing Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Book Excerpt:

After relentlessly studying the teachings of legendary healers, such as Dr Arnold Ehret and Dr Robert Morse, we set out on a journey of healing ourselves and reversing our very own conditions. Within our group, we were suffering from a range of diverse diseases and conditions, including Heart Disease, Kidney Disease, Diabetes, a variety of Autoimmune Diseases and Leaky Gut. During our healing journeys, we formed a journal that we would use on a daily basis, and this helped us to incorporate all of the lessons and tips that we had learnt and refined along the way - in short, it acted as a check list. It was important to us to not miss out on any knowledge and practices that had served us well. This journal is designed to guide and support you through your own journey with the core healing protocols included within its theme. One of the key conclusions that we reached through our individual journeys was that whether you are a sufferer of Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, or any other condition, the same protocol that we used applies. However, dependant on the severity of your Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, you may need to follow the protocols for longer, using specific herbs in order to achieve positive results, but you can make your own adjustments as you learn more. The great news is that all information and resources are readily available for personal study and application. Dr Arnold Ehret's books can be downloaded freely if you search for "arnold ehret books pdf". Visit rawfigs.com for Dr Robert Morse videos which can be searched through by keywords via the search bar. With this journal and your newly acquired knowledge, we trust that you will also soon start to experience the positive results that we did, along with the many others that send us regular positive feedback. We wish you all the best. The Health Formation Team
