An Integrated Approach to New Food Product Development Book Excerpt:

New products often fail not because they are bad products, but because they don't meet consumer expectations or are poorly marketed. In other cases, the marketing is spot on, but the product itself does not perform. These failures drive home the need to understand the market and the consumer in order to deliver a product which fulfills the two equa

New Product Development Book Excerpt:

The successful development, production and commercial launch of a stream of new and/or modified products has become one of the key factors in creating competitive advantage. Rapidly reducing development lead times and product life cycles, coupled with the shift from mass production to mass customisation are all increasing the pressure on product development activities and processes. This is leading companies to adopt a 'right first time' philosophy together with the constant review and improvement of their new product environment. New product development (NPD) performance needs to be constantly measured and action taken to improve current performance. Improvements to NPD activities and processes can be radical or incremental. They can be based on the review of past performance or the comparison of successful and less successful products. Benchmarking against the best practice in other companies can be used to advantage. Intuition also has its place. If you are interested in all or any of these improvement methodologies, this workbook is for you. The workbook provides information and a structured framework that allows a company to tailor NPD performance measurement and improvement methodologies to their particular circumstances. Part I introduces relevant 'theory' relating to NPD trends, strategy and performance evaluation and improvement. Part II covers the practical application of NPD strategy and performance evaluation/improvement using action based flow-charts ('animated' versions of the flow-charts are included on the CD-ROM). Part III covers the use of a structured NPD assessment tool and methodology presented in paper and CD-ROM formats. Relevant case studies and useful contacts and addresses are also included. Includes a questionnaire to enable companies to appraise their current perfomance and highlight areas to be improved Includes a questionnaire to enable companies to appraise their current perfomance and highlight areas to be improved

Sustainable Product Development Book Excerpt:

This book offers a comprehensive review of sustainability and product design, providing useful information on the relevant regulations and standards for industries to meet increasing market demands for eco-products, while reducing their impact on the environment. The examples and methods presented allow readers to gain insights into sustainable products. The authors also explain how to develop products with sustainability features by applying tools and methods for sustainable design and manufacture. These tools/methods include • Regulations/directives related to sustainable product development • Popular lifecycle analysis software packages • Environmental and social lifecycle impact assessment methods • Lifecycle inventory databases • Eco-point and eco-accounting infrastructure • ICT and traceability technologies for sustainable product development • Sustainable design and manufacture • Integrated approach for sustainable product development A description of each sustainability tool is accompanied by easy-to-understand guidelines as well as sustainable product development methods. Five different case studies are also presented to illustrate how to apply the tools and methods into the development of real sustainable products. In view of the increasing pressure on industries to meet the, sometimes conflicting, demands of the market and environment, this book is a valuable resource for engineers and managers in manufacturing companies wishing to update their knowledge of sustainable product development. It is also suitable for researchers and consultants who are involved or interested in sustainable product development, as well as for students studying sustainable development, production, and engineering management.

Product Development for Distant Target Groups Book Excerpt:

Malte Marwede explores the impact of cognitive distance in product development, in particular whether large distances between developers and the customer target groups adversely affect the creation of customer-centric product ideas. Furthermore, he shows how practical user involvement measures can potentially mitigate negative effects of cognitive distance in an applied industry-context. Silver Agers, people in their third age, and the aviation industry are in focus for the empirical analysis. Extensive market knowledge and insights are provided for this target group.

Decision making for New Product Development in Small Businesses Book Excerpt:

What goes on in a small firm that lives or dies by its capacity to innovate? How are decisions made on new product development, and how does that feed into the ecological, social and financial sustainability of the firm? This book answers the questions through an in-depth look at a small business that manufactures high-end carpet yarn. Using advanced analytical techniques to interrogate rich qualitative data, the book draws together established theories of decision-making and new product development, coupled with thinking about business sustainability to improve our understanding of this important area of business practice. The book further reinforces the importance and role of organizational learning in organizational decision-making, based on novel analysis of empirically developed qualitative data.

Influence of Psychological Factors on Product Development Book Excerpt:

This book focuses on the interrelationship of social, technical, and organizational aspects of and related to the product development process. It originated from activities in practice in industry and research laboratories. In order to ensure relative autonomy from the short-term economic interests of a given industrial branch or specific company, the research for this work was first conducted in pursuit of a PhD thesis intended to provide practice-oriented results. With the ansatz practice – theory – practice, a generalizable approach was achieved. It then evolved to cover additional issues brought forth by recent cases in the aerospace industry, among others. A combination of scientific methodologies is used to focus on the psychological factors that influence the quality of technical product development processes. The basic framework is provided by the grounded theory—a qualitative approach, in which data was not only collected by this author but is extended to cases from the history of technology described in the published literature. The inclusion of historical cases is possible, thanks to the availability of sufficiently detailed descriptions for examination in terms of the grounded theory principles. They appear in the Appendix. Cases cited were verified by comparing them with contrasting viewpoints from various sources. I was able to examine and complement some cases by contacting persons associated with the programs analyzed. Quantitative studies are also integrated in this research to verify the elements resulting from the grounded theory integration.

The Role of Microstructure in Topical Drug Product Development Book Excerpt:

Following the Semi-solid Microstructure Workshop sponsored by BASF and hosted by the Rutgers Center for Dermal Research, a pharmaceutical product development working group was formed. The group, known as the Q3 Working Group, selected the following five areas of focus: Particle/Globule Size and Distribution, Viscosity/Rheology/Spreadability, In Vitro Testing, State of API, State of Excipients. A committee was appointed for each of these five areas. The committees were tasked to review the literature, identify best practices, list experimental details required for an independent lab to duplicate the test, and propose scientific studies that may meaningfully advance this specific area of focus. Each committee has a chair (or co-chairs) that are the lead author(s) of the chapter. The Q3 Working Group members serve as the critical reviewers of each chapter, making suggestions that improve the quality of the document and that make each of the five chapters uniform in scope and content.Pharmaceutical development scientists that formulate topical products (creams, lotions, gels suspensions, foams, etc) and all the allied raw material suppliers, packaging suppliers, contract laboratories including CROs, CMOs and regulators need access to this book. Overall, the topic of semisolid microstructure is of equal importance to the generic pharmaceutical companies (filing Abbreviated New Drug Applications or ANDAs) and pharmaceutical companies filing New Drug Applications (NDAs). In addition to products applied to the skin, hair, and nails, The Role of Microstructure in Topical Drug Product Development’ crosses over and is essential reading to developers of oral suspensions, ophthalmic ointments and gels, otic suspension, vaginal semisolids and retention enemas.
