Description : Providing new insights into the relationship between transport and the environment, and the meaning of the concept of sustainable development for the transport sector, special attention is paid to the relationship between technological progress and policy. The different theoretical approaches are combined to create a strategy for R&D and the implementation of mega-technological innovations. The author deals with two specific cases: Maglev technology and fuel-cell technology for transport purposes. Taking into account the new theoretical insights and the empirical findings, the resulting synthesis and conclusions are important for researchers and professionals in transportation, environmental sciences and related fields.

Description : "The approach taken in this monograph reflects a need to try to understand the Constitution in theory and practice. The study addresses the range of powers available to respective governments and then looks again at the limits to which governments have gone to utilize levers traditionally thought to be outside their responsibility - to see, in otherwords, whether the constitutional text can be circumvented by the actions of government. As well, the study looks at developing areas of controversy in the financial field to try to position the debate for the next amendments to the Bank Act. At stake is the use of vast pools of capital. It will be an area in which we may soon again see constitutional litigation."--Preface.

Description : The world economy is commonly seen as becoming divided into trading blocks, in North America, Europe and elsewhere, and there is concern that this will result in the breakdown of liberal trade. This book examines these ideas critically, and considers and extends the economic theory of trading blocks and its implications for policy. The book examines in detail the relationship between exchange rate stabilization, exchange rate variability and trade, and looks at the theoretical and practical issues which the European Monetary System has thrown up. Other issues covered include the consequences for trade and welfare of large imperfectly competitive producers within and outside a block, capital and labour migration, regional policy, subsidy rules, employment rules and environmental standards.

Description : Most studies of eighteenth-century community life in America have focused on New England, and in many respects the New England town has become a model for our understanding of communities throughout the United States during this period. In this study of a mid-Atlantic town, Stephanie Grauman Wolf describes a very different way of organizing society, indicating that the New England model may prove atypical. In addition, her analysis suggests the origins of twentieth-century social patterns in eighteenth-century life. Germantown, Pennsylvania, was chosen for study because it was a small urban center characterized by an ethnically and religiously mixed population of high mobility. The author uses quantitative analysis and sample case study to examine all aspects of the community. She finds that heterogeneity and mobility had a marked effect on urban development--on landholding, occupation, life style, and related areas; community organization for the control of government and church affairs; and the structure and demographic development of the: family. Her work represents an important advance not only in our understanding of eighteenth-century American society, but also in the ways in which we investigate it.

Description : The "textures" of the Irish-American experience have been manifold, greatly influencing this country's economic, social, and cultural development over the past two centuries. Unlike that of many other European immigrants, the Irish journey to America was viewed largely as a one-way trip. They quickly adjusted to America, soon becoming citizens and active participants in politics. By the end of the 19th century, they dominated not only most American cities but also sports, especially baseball, and many were prominent in show business. In this entertaining study of one of America's most engaging and controversial groups, Lawrence McCaffrey reveals how the Irish adapted to urban life, progressing from unskilled working class to solid middle class. Denied power and influence in business and commerce, they achieved both through politics and the Catholic church. In addition to politicians and churchmen, McCaffrey discusses the roles of writers such as Finley Peter Dunne, James T. Farrell, Eugene O'Neill, J.F. Powers, Edwin O'Connor, William Kennedy, Elizabeth Cullinan, Tom Flanagan, Thomas Fleming, Jimmy Breslin, and John Gregory Dunne, as well as such film stars as Jimmy Cagney, Bing Crosby. Grace and Gene Kelly, and Spencer Tracy. McCaffrey completes the story with a look at the role of Irish nationalism in developing the personality of Irish America and in liberating Ireland from British colonialism. The result of some forty years of thinking and writing about Irish-American life, McCaffrey's Textures will appeal to scholars and general readers alike and may very well becomes the standard work on Irish America.

Description : After Nearly Six Decades Of Its Existence, There Is A Pervasive Feeling That India S Democracy Is In Crisis. But What Is The Nature Of This Threat? In This Essay Pratap Bhanu Mehta, Reminding Us What A Bold Experiment Bringing Democracy To A Largely Illiterate And Unpropertied India Was, Argues That The Sphere Of Politics Has Truly Created Opportunities For People To Participate In Society. But, Looking At Various Facets, He Also Finds That Persistent Social Inequality On The One Hand, And A Mistaken View Of The State S Proper Function And Organization On The Other, Have Modified And Hindered The Workings Of Democracy And Its Effects In Innumerable Ways. Positing The Quest For Self-Respect As Democracy S Deepest Aspiration, This Essay Explores How Inequality And The Crisis Of Accountability Have Together Impeded Collective Action To Achieve Such An End. To Recover This Sense Of Moral Well Being And Responsibility, Mehta Suggests, Is The Core Of The Democratic Challenge Before Us. Optimistic, Lively And Closely Argued, The Burden Of Democracy Offers A New Ideological Imagination That Throws Light On Our Discontents. By Returning To The Basics Of Democracy It Serves To Illuminate Our Predicament, Even While Perceiving The Broad Contours For Change. Interrogating India Is A Series That Looks Critically At The Common Sense Prevailing On Some Of The Most Pressing Issues Of Our Times. Provocative And Incisive, It Has Essays On Themes Ranging From Secularism, Political Representation And Nationalism, To Corruption, Terrorism And Language, Which Figure Prominently In Today S Middle-Class Discourse. Passionate, Accessible And Opinionated, These Reflections From Some Of India S Best Minds Should Help Us Make Better Sense Of The Public Debate On These Issues While Hopefully Provoking Us To Respond To The Challenges They Present.

Description : This critical and highly topical introduction to the current debates and politics surrounding welfare reform in the United Kingdom and the United States explains the origins and main tenets of the new Blair-Clinton orthodoxy. Central to the book is an examination of this orthodoxy's appeal to the concept of social justice. Bill Jordan demonstrates how values derived from the family and voluntary associations are in danger of running counter to the more fundamental principles of liberal democracy and the requirements of transnational economic exchange. He links the new politics of welfare to liberal and communitarian theories of citizenship and social justice, and assesses the broader prospects for European social policy in
