Public Responses to Fossil Fuel Export provides wide-ranging theoretical and methodological international contributions on the human dimensions of fossil fuel export, with a distinctive focus on exporting countries, some of which are new entrants into the marketplace. What do members of the public think about exporting fossil fuels in places where it is happening? What do they see as its main risks and benefits? What connections are being made to climate change and the impending energy transition? How have affected communities responded to proposals related to fossil fuel export, broadly defined to include transport by rail, pipeline, and ship? Contributions to the work are presented in three parts. The first part synopsizes the background of the project, outlines major social science theories and relevant previous research, and identifies global trends in energy production. Regional and national case studies related to public opinion on fossil fuel export are included in part two of the manuscript. Part three highlights community-based case studies. Implications for research and practice feature in the concluding chapter. Serves as a definitive reference on the social dimensions of fossil fuel export, bringing together case examples and public opinion research from around the world on this important but understudied issue Explores the broader implications for growing field of energy social science, particularly those focused on public perceptions of energy development, siting controversies and community impacts from energy development Provides practical and policy implications, including the need for better community inclusion in export and transport facility siting decisions, the changing status of certain fuels, impacts on public awareness, and the relevance of the movement of energy resources

Previously published as a special issue of Globalizations, this collection of essays addresses what is arguably the most pressing and urgent issue of our day - the continuing development of global environmental crises and the need for new and urgent responses to them by the world community. The contributors include social scientists, environmental historians, anthropologists, and science policy researchers, and together they give an overview of the history of the globalization of environmental crisis over the past several decades, both in terms of the science of measurement and the types of policy and public responses that have emerged to date. The specific issue areas addressed in the book cover a wide range of topics, including international environmental governance, North-South inequalities, climate change, global warming, tropical forests, air pollution, economic and paradigm shifts, sustainability, indigenous peoples and eco-conservation, EU environmental policy, the United States and politicized climate science, and more. The Globalization of Environmental Crisis will be of particular interest to all those concerned with the on-going debate over the state of the global environment and what to do about it.

The global market for oil and gas resources is rapidly changing. Three major trends—the rise of new consumers, the increasing influence of state players, and concerns about climate change—are combining to challenge existing regulatory structures, many of which have been in place for a half-century. Global Energy Governance analyzes the energy market from an institutionalist perspective and offers practical policy recommendations to deal with these new challenges. Much of the existing discourse on energy governance deals with hard security issues but neglects the challenges to global governance. Global Energy Governance fills this gap with perspectives on how regulatory institutions can ensure reliable sources of energy, evaluate financial risk, and provide emergency response mechanisms to deal with interruptions in supply. The authors bring together decisionmakers from industry, government, and civil society in order to address two central questions: •What are the current practices of existing institutions governing global oil and gas on financial markets? •How do these institutions need to adapt in order to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century? The resulting governance-oriented analysis of the three interlocking trends also provides the basis for policy recommendations to improve global regulation. With contributions by experts in economics, geography, marketing, agriculture, business, international affairs and more, this book addresses the extent and gravity of the current environmental situation. From toxic industrial and medical waste to acid rain and radioactive waste, from the Alaskan oil spill to the continuing destruction of the rain forests, McKee's focus is on economic welfare. He points out that public and private issues regarding environmental problems have been limited to crisis response. The contributions he has chosen for this volume clarify key issues for formulating policy options toward long-range economic welfare. The book includes an assessment of environmental policy during the Reagan administration and position statements by a prominent oil executive and a leading environmental conservationist. Other topics covered include: ethics and environmental restraint; financing the clean-up of hazardous waste; the impact of environmental regulation on plant location; solid waste disposal; environmental damage and national security; the decomissioning of nuclear facilities; the greenhouse effect; environmental constraints on economic diversification in small economies; and transboundary issues facing Canada and the United States. This work provides a valuable overview for those concerned with the economic aspects of energy, and the environment, including policy-makers in business, government, and academia.

Energy policy is the manner in which a given entity (often governmental) has decided to address issues of energy development including energy production, distribution and consumption. The attributes of energy policy may include legislation, international treaties, incentives to investment, guidelines for energy conservation, taxation and other public policy techniques. A national energy policy comprises a set of measures involving that country's laws, treaties and agency directives. This book presents the latest research on the economic effects, security aspects and environmental issues connected with energy policy.
