Description : This book documents the recent focus on a branch of Riemannian geometry called Comparison Geometry. The simple idea of comparing the geometry of an arbitrary Riemannian manifold with the geometries of constant curvature spaces has seen a tremendous evolution recently. This volume is an up-to-date reflection of the recent development regarding spaces with lower (or two-sided) curvature bounds. The content reflects some of the most exciting activities in comparison geometry during the year and especially of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute's workshop devoted to the subject. This volume features both survey and research articles. It also provides complete proofs: in one case, a new, unified strategy is presented and new proofs are offered. This volume will be a valuable source for advanced researchers and those who wish to learn about and contribute to this beautiful subject.

Description : The intention of this book is to explain to a mathematician having no previous knowledge in this domain, what "noncommutative probability" is. So the first decision was not to concentrate on a special topic. For different people, the starting points of such a domain may be different. In what concerns this question, different variants are not discussed. One such variant comes from Quantum Physics. The motivations in this book are mainly mathematical; more precisely, they correspond to the desire of developing a probability theory in a new set-up and obtaining results analogous to the classical ones for the newly defined mathematical objects. Also different mathematical foundations of this domain were proposed. This book concentrates on one variant, which may be described as "von Neumann algebras". This is true also for the last chapter, if one looks at its ultimate aim. In the references there are some papers corresponding to other variants; we mention Gudder, S.P. &al (1978). Segal, I.E. (1965) also discusses "basic ideas".

Description : This report is the result of a fast-track study of U.S. mathematical sciences research institutes done in response to a request from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The task of the Committee on U.S. Mathematical Sciences Research Institutes was to address the following three questions: 1. What are the characteristic features of effective mathematical sciences research institutes in the ways that they further mathematical research in the United States, and are there ways that the current configuration can be improved? 2. What kinds of institutes should there be in the United States, and how many does the nation need? 3. How should U.S. mathematical sciences research institutes be configured (with regard to, for example, diversity of operating formats, distribution of mathematical fields, and interinstitute cooperation or coordination) in order to have the nation's mathematical research enterprise continue to be most productive and successful?

Description : K -Theory has revolutionized the study of operator algebras in the last few years. As the primary component of the subject of "noncommutative topol ogy," K -theory has opened vast new vistas within the structure theory of C* algebras, as well as leading to profound and unexpected applications of opera tor algebras to problems in geometry and topology. As a result, many topolo gists and operator algebraists have feverishly begun trying to learn each others' subjects, and it appears certain that these two branches of mathematics have become deeply and permanently intertwined. Despite the fact that the whole subject is only about a decade old, operator K -theory has now reached a state of relative stability. While there will undoubtedly be many more revolutionary developments and applications in the future, it appears the basic theory has more or less reached a "final form." But because of the newness of the theory, there has so far been no comprehensive treatment of the subject. It is the ambitious goal of these notes to fill this gap. We will develop the K -theory of Banach algebras, the theory of extensions of C*-algebras, and the operator K -theory of Kasparov from scratch to its most advanced aspects. We will not treat applications in detail; however, we will outline the most striking of the applications to date in a section at the end, as well as mentioning others at suitable points in the text.

Description : During the week of September 13, 1988 the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute hosted a four day workshop on Arboreal Group Theory. This volume is the product of that meeting. The program centered on the topic of the theory of groups acting on trees and the various applications to hyperbolic geometry. Topics include the theory of length functions, structure of groups acting freely on trees, spaces of hyperbolic structures and their compactifications, and moduli for tree actions.

Description : The Spring 1986 Program in Geometric Function Theory (GFT) at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) brought together mathe maticians interested in Teichmiiller theory, quasiconformal mappings, Kleinian groups, univalent functions and value distribution. It included a large and stimulating Workshop, preceded by a mini-conference on String Theory attended by both mathematicians and physicists. These activities produced interesting results and fruitful interactions among the partici pants. These volumes represent only a portion of the papers that will even tually result from ideas developed in the offices and corridors of MSRI's elegant home. The Editors solicited contributions from all participants in the Program whether or not they gave a talk at the Workshop. Papers were also submit ted by mathematicians invited but unable to attend. All manuscripts were refereed. The articles included here cover a broad spectrum, representative of the activities during the semester. We have made an attempt to group them by subject, for the reader's convenience. The Editors take pleasure in thanking all participants, authors and ref erees for their work in producing these volumes. We are also grateful to the Scientific Advisory Council of MSRI for sup porting the Program in GFT. Finally thanks are due to the National Sci ence Foundation and those Universities (including Cornell, Michigan, Min nesota, Rutgers Newark, SUNY Stony Brook) who gave released time to faculty members to participate for extended periods in this program.

Description : In 1989-90 the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute conducted a program on Algebraic Topology and its Applications. The main areas of concentration were homotopy theory, K-theory, and applications to geometric topology, gauge theory, and moduli spaces. Workshops were conducted in these three areas. This volume consists of invited, expository articles on the topics studied during this program. They describe recent advances and point to possible new directions. They should prove to be useful references for researchers in Algebraic Topology and related fields, as well as to graduate students.

Description : James Lepowsky t The search for symmetry in nature has for a long time provided representation theory with perhaps its chief motivation. According to the standard approach of Lie theory, one looks for infinitesimal symmetry -- Lie algebras of operators or concrete realizations of abstract Lie algebras. A central theme in this volume is the construction of affine Lie algebras using formal differential operators called vertex operators, which originally appeared in the dual-string theory. Since the precise description of vertex operators, in both mathematical and physical settings, requires a fair amount of notation, we do not attempt it in this introduction. Instead we refer the reader to the papers of Mandelstam, Goddard-Olive, Lepowsky-Wilson and Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman. We have tried to maintain consistency of terminology and to some extent notation in the articles herein. To help the reader we shall review some of the terminology. We also thought it might be useful to supplement an earlier fairly detailed exposition of ours [37] with a brief historical account of vertex operators in mathematics and their connection with affine algebras. Since we were involved in the development of the subject, the reader should be advised that what follows reflects our own understanding. For another view, see [29].1 t Partially supported by the National Science Foundation through the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and NSF Grant MCS 83-01664. 1 We would like to thank Igor Frenkel for his valuable comments on the first draft of this introduction.
